Onze Gezellen adds American and Australian pitcher to roster

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Onze Gezellen has added two foreign pitchers to its roster for the upcoming big league-season, which opens on Saturday, April 16. American Maranda Jimenez and Australian Zali Summers will join the team somewhere in April or May. The additions were confirmed on Monday-afternoon (March 14) in a publication on the website of the Haarlems Dagblad-newspaper.

23-year old righthanded pitcher Maranda Jimenez, who also can play in the infield, is expected to play for Onze Gezellen from May on. She currently playing for Great Danes, the softball-team of the University of Albany. There, former Dutch and Italian big league-catcher Kate Gentile is the Assistant Coach since 2017. After having played in Italy (where she also played in the Italian National Team) for six seasons (2004-2009) for Nuoro, Kate Gentile played in five seasons (2010-2014) in the Dutch big league for Terrasvogels, which merged with Onze Gezellen after the 2020 season. Thereafter, she was the Battery Coach of big league-team Olympia Haarlem in 2016 and 2017.

In the current college-season, Jimenez pitched in three games and is 2-1 with 14 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings pitched.

In the 2021 college-season, Maranda Jimenez struckout 50 batters in 55 1/3 inning. She then batted .320 with 33 basehits, including five homeruns (one grand slam) and batted in 20 runs.

In the 2019 season, the righthander threw a No-Hitter and homered twice. In 2018, she was selected for the America East All-Tournament Team and recorded 10 victories and 65 strikeouts.

19-year old righthanded pitcher Zali Summers, who also can play in the outfield, is expected in Haarlem towards the end of April. She plays for Brisbane Panthers, whose home-field Downey Park is unplayable at the moment due to the heavy floods that struck the State of Queensland in the previous weeks.

While pitching for the softball-team of Clontarf Beach State High Schoolin Redcliffe (Queensland), she traveled with the representing team of Queensland to Japan in August-September 2019. There, the team was invited by the Kochi Softball Association. In Japan, Queensland practiced and played games against High School-teams.

Zali Summers also pitched for the National Under-21 Team of Australia.
