Sidney de Jong awarded in Almere
Nederlands
ALMERE (Neth.) - Sidney de Jong, catcher and captain of the Dutch National Baseball Team and L&D Amsterdam Pirates has been named Male Sports Athlete of the Year in his residence Almere during the annual Almere Sports Gala held on Wednesday, December 14. De Jong, who won the world title with the Orange squad and captured the national championship with Amsterdam, got the most votes for the title. Also nominated for the annual award were Bryan Engelhardt, who also was a member of the Dutch Baseball Team and plays for Corendon Kinheim in Haarlem, and Peter Elzinga (archery).

René Peeters, Alderman of Sports for the Municipality of Almere, also handed Sidney de Jong the Commemorative Sports Medal of Almere for his contributions to baseball in general.

Areke Spel, player of the Dutch National Softball Team and Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem was nominated for Female Athlete of the Year. But Areke, who won the European title with the Dutch team and the national title with Sparks Haarlem, didn't, as this award went to Natalie Grinham, who won the European squash-title. Also nominated was Marije van Huigenbosch (bobsled).

Peter Elzinga also was nominated for another award, as he formed the Mix-Archery Team with Inge van Caspel and as such was nominated for Sports Team of the Year. That award went to Badminton Club Almere, which for the first time in its history qualified for the Play-Offs for the Dutch championship. Also nominated was HAVAS (handball).

Ivar de Jong (swimming) was named Talent of the Year. Also nominated for this award were Jelle de Boer (sailing) and Alex Vlaar (badminton).

The 21ste edition of the Almeerse Sportverkiezingen (Almere Sports Gala) was held in Topsportcentrum Almere and was hosted by Jan van der Meulen. In the meantime, it was announced that the annual Provincial Sports Gala of Flevoland (where Almere is part of), scheduled for January, was canceled. Due to financial cuts, there will be no budget available for the event for the coming four years. The organization is now thinking how to replace the event. In January of this year, Sidney de Jong was named 2010 Male Athlete of the Year for the Province of Flevoland.
