Members Dutch Baseball Team open Stock Exchange
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM - On Friday-morning October 21, three players and two coaches of the successful Dutch Baseball Team that captured the World Championship less than a week ago, took part in the official bell ceremony to open today's NYSE Euronext at the Amsterdam Stock Exchange Building in the Dutch capital.

Manager Brian Farley, Coach/Business Manager Tjerk Smeets and players Bryan Engelhardt, Sidney de Jong and Vince Rooi took part in the ceremony that started today's business. The five were joined by Hans Meijer, Petra Dorrestijn and Ron Perdon of the KNBSB-Office.

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is considered the oldest in the world and was established in 1602 by the Dutch East Indies Company. On September 22, 2000, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange merged with the Brussels Stock Exchange and the Paris Stock Exchange to form Euronext Amsterdam. On April 4, 2007 a merger followed with the New York Stock Exchange, resulting to the current NYSE Euronext. The Stock Exchange is since 1912 located in building in the historical center of Amsterdam.

The opening bell is sounded daily at 9:00 AM to mark the opening of the trading session in Europe. Traditionally, this is done by all kind of dignitaries, including politicians, captains of industry, atletes, tv-personalities, etc. Today, the members of the World Baseball Champion joined the impressive list.

For Saturday, October 22, Amsterdam's local TV-station AT5, as well as canal boat company Het Smidje, had extended an invitation to the baseball squad for an Amsterdam canal ride with two boats to honor them for winning the world title. The invitation was done during a live broadcast last Tuesday-evening after the team had returned home from Panama. However, the invitation was denied, as it was stated that the team was incomplete at the moment and the fact that the KNBSB wants to honor the team on November 11.
