HCAW shuts out Pirates in Urbanus-opener
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - Mr. Cocker HCAW opened the 31st edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus, Sr. Tournament on a another chilly evening with a 2-0 shutout-win in six innings against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. The tournament continues on Saturday with three games, then concludes on Sunday with the final two games.

On Friday, the game between HCAW and Amsterdam was the first to be played this season on the renovated field. The home site of the club in Bussum is now the first in the Dutch big league with artificial grass in the infield. On a later date, the site will be re-opened officially when all renovation work has been completed.

The game remained scoreless for five innings, then HCAW scored twice in the sixth at bat, which was to be the last, as the tournament-rule of one hour and 50 minutes has been reached.

Amsterdam had the better chance to score a run than HCAW in the first three at bats. Amsterdam reached base five times, while HCAW was unable to reach base off of starter Rob Cordemans, who retired nine batters in a row.

Amsterdam got two runners in base with two outs in the first at bat. Percy Isenia then walked and Bas de Jong singled, but the two stranded, as Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a groundout.

Pirates then also left two runners in the second inning off of starter Sander Helmendach. With one out, Kevin Weijgertse singled, then Roelie Henriquez singled with two outs. The runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball, but this time, a fly-out by Michael Duursma ended the inning.

In the next three innings, Amsterdam reached base twice. In the third, Bas de Jong walked with one out and in the fifth inning Jesse Aussems reached on an error.

HCAW got on base for the first time in the fourth inning off of Cordemans. Jasper Keijzer then led off with a single and Jorin van Amstel singled with one out. But with two runners on base and one out, Cordemans struckout the next two batters to end the inning. New pitcher Kyle Ward then retired the side (two strikeouts) in the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, Pirates got its second runner on third base. With one out, Kenny Berkenbosch walked, then pinch-runner Raoell Kortstam stole second base and moved on a grounder. With two outs, Kevin Weijgertse walked, but the inning ended when he was caught stealing, which left Kortstam at third base.

After having reached base only twice in the first five innings, HCAW struck in the home off the sixth. Former HCAW-pitcher Kyle Ward first gave up a lead-off single to Dillon True, then walked Jasper Keijzer. Next, a throwing error on a force play-grounder by Jim Froberg enabled True to open the score. Keijzer then stole third base, but a flyout and strikeout accounted for two outs. A single by Linoy Croes then led to the second run, before a flyout ended the game.
