Japan wins Gold Medal on East Asian Games

Japan has won the Gold Medal of the baseball-tournament on the sixth edition of the East Asian Games in Tianjin (China).
In the final on Monday-evening (October 14), Japan won 4-2 vs. South Korea.
Earlier in the day, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) shutout host China 4-0 to win the Bronze Medal.
This was the first time that baseball was included as one of the sports on the East Asian Games.
A total of 24 sports (including 16 Olympic sports) were on the programme this year, a new record.
The multi-sport event for East Asian countries was first organized in 1993.
Participating in the event are East Asian-countries
China, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea and South Korea and the Pacific island of Guam.
In 1997 and 2001, Kazakhstan also partcipated.
In the bronze medal-game, Taipei outhit China 8-5 at the Tianjin Sports Center Baseball Field.
Taipei opened the score with two runs in the fourth inning, then added one in the seventh and ninth at bat.
Taiwan, which lost 4-3 to China in the preliminary round, was held hitless in the first three innings, but then scored twice in the fourth on a 2-out double by Po-ting Hsiao.
Pitchers Hua-wei Lo (6 innings) and Chun-lin Kuo (3 innings) struckout 13 batters combined.
