Dutch Team wins big vs. China

PEORIA, Arizona (USA) - The Dutch National Baseball Team played its first of three exhibition games against the national team of China on Saturday, February 16. The Orange squad won big, 16-3.

Earlier, the team of Manager Hensley Meulens played three exhibition games against teams of Community Colleges, winning two of them.

The Dutch Team is currently in Arizona preparing for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. On Monday and Tuesday, the Netherlands and China will meet each other again. Today's game was played at Peoria Sports Complex, the Spring Training-home of the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres.

The Dutch Team decided the game early, rallying for six runs in the first inning. Randolph Oduber led off with a triple, then scored when Hainley Statia singled. Yurendell de Caster and Curt Smith (with one out) then walked and Dashenko Ricardo followed with a 2-run double that made it 3-0. A single by Dwayne Kemp and sac-fly by Danny Rombley lifted the lead to 6-0.

Hereafter, the Dutch offense was held scoreless in the next four innings. In this period, only Curt Smith was able to reach base with a walk and a double. In the meantime, China scored a run in its first and third inning to narrow the deficit to 6-2.

In the sixth inning, the Orange staged its next rally, scoring five runs, highlighted by an RBI-triple by Hainley Statia. Danny Rombley, Randolph Oduber, Kalian Sams and Danny Arribas singled in this at bat.

Yurendell de Caster doubled with two outs in the seventh inning, but stranded, then the Dutch added three more runs in the eighth at bat. In this inning, Phildrick Llewellyn was hit by a pitch, Michael Duursma and Danny Rombley both singled and Randolph Oduber contributed with a runscoring double.

In the ninth inning, the Dutch offense lifted the lead to 16-2, thanks to hits by Yurendell de Caster, Kalian Sams and Danny Arribas and a sac-fly by Phildrick Llewellyn. China scored its third run in the ninth at bat.

The Dutch Team collected 17 basehits, including three by Randolph Oduber.
