Neptunus first to reach Play-Offs; 2nd finalist to be decided
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM / BUSSUM / HAARLEM / DORDRECHT (Neth.) - DOOR Neptunus became the first team to qualify for this years Play-Offs after winning 6-0 today (Sunday, June 1) at Mr. Cocker HCAW. Whatever happens on Tuesday-evening during the two remaining make-up games, Neptunus will be one of the four teams that will play for the Dutch championship-title in September.

The decision for the second finalist will come Tuesday-evening with the result of the make-up game Vaessen Pioniers has to play against UVV. This is the result of L&D Amsterdam Pirates winning 5-3 vs. Pioniers this afternoon.

By winning this afternoon, Neptunus can end up in a tie with Amsterdam with a loss on Tuesday. Neptunus then will qualify based on the head-to-head result of the 3-game series played last week, which it won 2-1.

Neptunus also can end up in a 3-way tie with Amsterdam and Pioniers. In that case, the head-to-head result will give a new tie. The next tie-breaker is the run-average (runs scored x 100 : runs against) of the games played between the teams concerned. This also will be in favor of Neptunus.

These are the scenarios for Tuesday-evening:

Pioniers and Neptunus both win their make-up games Tuesday. In this case, Pioniers will be the second finalist.

Pioniers loses and Neptunus wins its make-up game. In this case, Pirates will be the second finalist.

Pioniers wins and Neptunus loses its make-up game. In this case, Pioniers is the second finalist.

Pioniers and Neptunus both lose on Tuesday-evening. In this case, Pirates will be the second finalist.

The make-up game of Pioniers ends in a tie and Neptunus wins. In this case, Pirates is the second finalist based on the head-to-head results against Pioniers (2-1).

The make-up game of Pioniers ends in a tie and Neptunus loses. This will result in a 3-way tie. As Pioniers won twice vs. Neptunus, Neptunus won twice vs. Pirates and Pirates won twice vs. Pioniers, this will give a new 3-way tie. In this case, Pirates will become the second finalist based on the run-average of the games played between the three teams. Neptunus leads with a run-average of 121,74, followed by Amsterdam (95,24) and Pioniers (85,71).

OK, back to today.

Neptunus shutout HCAW 6-0, but collected only two more basehits (12-10), while the HCAW-defense committed four errors. Dwayne Kemp hit a 2-run homerun in the ninth inning.

Amsterdam took a 2-0 lead, saw Pioniers come alongside, but re-took the lead in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Kenny Berkenbosch hit an important 2-run homerun that enlarged the Amsterdam-lead en route to the 5-3 victory.

UVV won 4-3 vs. Corendon Kinheim to win its second game in two days against the Haarlem-squad. UVV led 3-0 in the fifth inning and added an importance insurance run in the ninth inning when Brennan Nijhof (who was 3-for-4) homered.

ADO Lakers trailed 2-1 after seven innings vs. Mampaey The Hawks, but then scored twice in the eighth to win 3-2.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Vaessen Pioniers

At Amsterdam, L&D Amsterdam Pirates again won 5-3 vs. Vaessen Pioniers, the same score as on Saturday. Amsterdam took a 2-0 lead, saw Pioniers come alongside, but re-took the lead in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Kenny Berkenbosch hit an important 2-run homerun that enlarged the Amsterdam-lead.

With the victory, Amsterdam set up an all-deciding make-up game Pioniers has to play on Tuesday-evening vs. UVV. The outcome of that game will decide who will be the second team that qualifies for the Play-Offs in the first half of the season.

Amsterdam opened the score with two runs in the third inning off of Steven van Groningen. With one out, Patrick Bok singled and stole second base, then Björn Hato walked. The two then scored when Remco Draijer followed with a double. Hereafter, Pirates got the bases loaded with one out when Michael Duursma singled and Bas de Jong was hit by a pitch. But no additional runs were added, as a force out at home and flyout followed.

Pioniers got one run back in the fourth inning. The team had left two runners in the second inning off of Amsterdam-starter Chris Mowday. But now, the righthander gave up a lead-off single to Danny Rombley, followed by an RBI-double by Vince Rooi. With one out, he walked Kevin Dirksen, but the Amsterdam-defense then turned a nice double play.

After being retired in order in the fifth inning, Pioniers came alongside in the next at bat. Dirk van 't Klooster led off with a single and moved to third on an one-out single by Vince Rooi. This led to a pitching change and Daan Hendrix took over for Mowday. He began with a wild pitch that enabled Van 't Klooster to tie the score, but Hendrix then struckout Mark Duursma and a foul-fly ended the bat.

Amsterdam immediately re-took the lead in the home of the sixth. With one out, Percy Isenia singled, then the bases got loaded when Rashid Gerard and Bas Nooij walked. A sacrifice fly by Patrick Bok then gave Pirates a renewed 3-2 lead and also brought in a new pitcher. Dennis Buring took over for Van Groningen (who suffered his first loss and is now 4-1) and closed the inning with a groundout.

The top of the seventh saw two nice defensive plays from Amsterdam. Short stop Michael Duursma made a great and spectacular play behind second base on a hard grounder through the middle by Dè Flanegin and retired the veteran player at first base. With two outs, Max Draijer singled, but he then was caught stealing on a strong throw by catcher Bas Nooij.

Amsterdam added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Michael Duursma walked and then Kenny Berkenbosch homered with two outs to make it 5-2.

Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 5-3 in the eighth. Zerzinho Croes led off with a single, which brought in new pitcher Kyle Ward. An error on a double play-grounder by Dirk van 't Klooster then led to two runners, who moved on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Danny Rombley brought in Croes and also brought in closer Jurrian Koks. He got two flyouts to end the inning.

In the ninth, Koks gave up a lead-off single to Kevin Dirksen, but then three outs followed, which earned him his fourth save.

As Amsterdam took the lead when Daan Hendrix was pitching, he became the pitcher-of-record and with that, he earned his first victory on the big league-level. After making his debut pitching in one game in 2012, the righthander had 18 relief appearances last season and eight in relief this season before today, all without a decision.

Mr. Cocker HCAW vs. DOOR Neptunus

At Bussum, DOOR Neptunus shutout Mr. Cocker HCAW 6-0, but collected only two more basehits (12-10), while the HCAW-defense committed four errors. Dwayne Kemp hit a 2-run homerun in the ninth inning of the slow-paced game, which took almost 3½ hours. With the win, Neptunus secured itself of a spot in the Play-Offs, as the Rotterdam-squad will finish in either first or second place in the first half of the season. Neptunus qualifies based on its head-to-head result against L&D Amsterdam Pirates (2-1) in case of a tie with this team, but also on having the best run-average in case of tying in a 3-way tie with Amsterdam and Vaessen Pioniers.

After three scoreless innings, Neptunus opened the score with two runs in the fourth at bat off of starter Maickel Rietel. The HCAW-defense supported its pitcher in the first three innings, turning three double plays! In the first, Benjamin Dille singled with one out, but then Raily Legito grounded into a 5-4-3 'around-the-horn' double play. In the second, Dwayne Kemp led off with a walk and this time, Gianison Boekhoudt grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. In the third, Neptunus got the bases loaded with one out. Adrian Anthony led off with a walk, then, with one out, Shaldimar Daantji and Stijn van der Meer both singled. The inning ended when Benjamin Dille grounded into a 3-2-3 double play.

But in the fourth inning, Rietel gave up three hits and two runs. With one out, Dwayne Kemp reached on a bunt-single and Gianison Boekhoudt singled. A double-steal followed, then the bases got loaded when Adrian Anthony walked with two outs. A single by Urving Kemp then brought in two runs, followed by an inning-ending strikeout.

Neptunus added a run in the fifth inning off of new pitcher Leon Elshof. He took over for Maickel Rietel, who didn't return to the mound due to a foot-injury. Lead-off hitter Stijn van der Meer reached on an error, stole second and advanced on a throwing error, then scored on a single by Benjamin Dille. Hereafter, HCAW turned its fourth double play of the game.

A grounder by Urving Kemp brought in the fourth run for Neptunus in the sixth inning.

The remaining two runs were scored in the ninth off of reliever Tom de Blok. Stijn van der Meer led off with a single and advanced on a grounder. He then tried to score on a single by Raily Legito, but was thrown out at the plate on a nice throw from centerfielder Jasper Keijzer. But hereafter, Dwayne Kemp homered to make it 6-0.

HCAW got several scoring opportunities, but left 16 runners behind in this game, including the bases loaded three times. Ten of those runners were left in scoring position. HCAW got it's lead-off hitter on base seven times.

After being retired in order in the first inning by starter Misja Harcksen, HCAW got the bases loaded in the second inning, but failed to open the score. In the fourth inning, HCAW had runners on second and third base with two outs, but they also stranded.

In the sixth inning, off of new pitcher Will Dismukes, HCAW again loaded the bases, but again already had two outs. Rossini Frolijk led off with a walk and Jorin van Amstel singled, but then a strikeout and force out followed. A walk for Jim Froberg then loaded the bases, but a flyout left the three runners behind.

In the next inning, HCAW got the bases loaded for the third time. Again with two outs. Roy Seltenrijch and Kevin Weijgertse began with walks, then two strikeouts followed. A walk for Van Amstel loaded the bases and this time, a groundout ended the inning.

In the eighth and ninth inning, it was Neptunus that turned two double plays to save the shutout.

Corendon Kinheim vs. UVV

At Haarlem, UVV won 4-3 vs. Corendon Kinheim to win its second game in two days against the Haarlem-squad. UVV led 3-0 in the fifth inning and added an importance insurance run in the ninth inning when Brennan Nijhof (who was 3-for-4) homered.

After being outhit in the previous two games, Kinheim today collected one more basehit than UVV, but nevertheless was left empty-handed for the second day in a row.

UVV had a productive first inning off of starter Glenn Wassink, but left the bases loaded. With one out, Brennan Nijhof and Gilmer Lampe singled, then Mike Bazuin walked with two outs. But Wassink then ended the inning with a strikeout. He retired the side in the next at bat, adding two strikeouts.

UVV then opened the score with a run in the third inning. Norbert Jongerius led off with a single and scored on an one-out double by Gilmer Lampe. The latter advanced to third base on a grounder, but then was left behind.

UVV enlarged its lead by adding two runs in the fifth at bat. Nick Peels led off with a triple and scored on a following sacrifce fly by Norbert Jongerius. Next, Brennan Nijhof doubled and the bases got loaded when Gilmer Lampe and Dennis De Quint both walked. This brought in Jerrold Martijn as new pitcher, but he began with a walk for Mike Bazuin that made it 3-0. A strikeout and groundout followed, meaning UVV left three runners, but it had improved its lead.

In the home of the fifth inning, Kinheim got one run back off of Duko Jansen, who has pitched several seasons for Kinheim in the past. Lead-off hitter René Cremer reached on a bunt-single, then Quintin De Cuba singled with one out. The two advanced on a grounder, then Cremer scored on a passed ball, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

Kinheim narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning. With one out, Mervin Gario doubled and moved when Bruce Martinus reached on an error. An error on a force play-grounder by Jefferson Muzo then enabled Gario to score. Two flyouts followed and Kinheim left two runners behind.

After two scoreless innings, UVV added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning off of Arshwin Asjes. The closer began with two strikeouts, but then gave up a homerun to Brennan Nijhof, his first in the big league. With this, Nijhof only missed the triple today to hit-for-the-cycle.

The homerun gave UVV a 4-2 lead, which was an important margin, as Kinheim scored another run in the home of the ninth. With one out, pinch-hitter Sander Paap singled. Hereafter, Kenny Van Den Branden, the starting pitcher of the first game on Thursday, came on in relief for Gilian van Lith, who had entered the game in the seventh inning. Van Lith got a pop-fly for the second out, but then gave up an RBI-double to Bryan Engelhardt that made it 4-3. Next batter Jeffrey Arends then flied out to end the game, giving Van Den Branden a save.

Mampaey The Hawks vs. ADO Lakers

At Dordrecht, ADO Lakers trailed 2-1 after seven innings vs. Mampaey The Hawks, but then scored twice in the eighth to win 3-2.

Today, Venezuelan Danny Forte Salvador finally made his first appearance in the Dutch big league for The Hawks. He already was expected a few weeks ago, but then his trip to the Netherlands was postponed due to a visa-problem. But he arrived a few days ago and initially was named the starting pitcher for Saturday's game. It was then decided to move him to today's game and so, he made his debut at home in Dordrecht.

The righthander did fine and threw six solid innings in which he struckout six batters, walked three and gave up only three hits. He was supported with two runs and left the mound with The Hawks leading 2-1, but then the bullpen failed to hold on to the lead.

Dennis Burgersdijk, the starter for ADO Lakers, also had a fine outing. The righthander struckout seven batters, gave up only five hits and became the winning pitcher after ADO Lakers turned the game around in the eighth inning.

But Burgersdijk faced a 2-0 deficit in the second inning. With one out, he gave up a single to Gregory Trinidad and walked Berry van Donselaar. He then gave up a 2-run double to Jules Peters.

Burgersdijk then held The Hawks scoreless from there on. He retired the side in the third, fifth and sixth inning. In the fourth, he gave up a single to Steven Wharwood, but he was then called out for interference while advancing on a grounder by Gregory Trinidad.

Forte made his debut by striking out the first two batters he faced. He then gave up a single to Christian Diaz, but he was left behind. In the second inning, Forte walked Martijn Riphagen, who then advanced on a sacrific bunt and was awarded third base on a balk, but he also stranded.

ADO Lakers then left two more runners in the third inning, but scored a run in the fourth. With one out, Riphagen singled, moved on a passed ball and a grounder, then scored on a single by Wamaer Bordewijk.

Next, Forte retired the side in the fifth and sixth inning, then was relieved by Edilberto Oropesa in the seventh, who also retired the side.

In the home of the seventh, The Hawks appeared to add more runs. Gregory Trinidad and Berry van Donselaar began with singles. After the latter was replaced by pinch-runner Kevin van Veen, a sacrifice bunt by Jules Peters moved the runners. The bases were loaded and a force play was set up by walking pinch-hitter Gino Hersilia intentionally. The inning then ended with a rare double play. Van Veen was eliminated in a run-down after a pick-off to second base, then Trinidad was eliminated at the plate trying to score in this situation.

It was a costly inning for The Hawks, which could have enlarge its lead. But it still led only 2-1 and the defensive success sparked ADO Lakers as it scored two runs in the next inning to turn the game its way.

Oropesa walked lead-off hitter Jason Jakobus, who then stole second base and scored the tying run when a throwing error was made on a grounder by Stephen Henson. Moments later, Henson, who had advanced to second base on the error, scored when Christian Diaz followed with a single to make it 3-2 in favor of ADO Lakers. This led to a pitching change, as Oropesa was relieved by José Moreno. With this, Moreno made his comeback on the mound after being sidelined with an injury. On May 3, he started for The Hawks, but was hit on his elbow by a lead-off line drive in the first inning by Linoy Croes. Today, he got a double play-grounder from Glenn Romney and then gave up a single to Kelvi Martinez. But he was caught stealing moments later. In the ninth, Moreno retired the side in order.

Now trailing 3-2, The Hawks got two runners on base in the home of the eighth. Remian Denis led off with a walk, which brought in Jeremy Winkel as reliever for Burgersdijk. Denis then moved on a sacrifice bunt and Berend Ruben walked. Another pitching change followed and Martijn Riphagen took the mound. He ended the inning with a strikeout and foul-out.

In the home of the ninth, Kevin van Veen walked with one out and Jules Peters singled. A flyout followed and Riphagen then finished the game with a strikeout to secure the win.
