Pirates, Kinheim open 2nd half with small wins
Nederlands
VLEUTEN / DORDRECHT / THE HAGUE / HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Corendon Kinheim, who are the two favorites to capture the remaining two spots for the Play-Offs, opened the second half of the regular season with small victories. And they both almost ended up empty-handed!

L&D Amsterdam Pirates faced a 2-1 deficit vs. UVV when the ninth inning began. The squad then came alongside and went on to win 5-2 in 10 innings.

Corendon Kinheim held an 8-4 lead in the eighth inning vs. Mampaey The Hawks, which then got five consecutive batters to reach base. The team narrowed the deficit to only 8-7 and left runners on second and third base. And so, Kinheim won with only a one-run margin.

DOOR Neptunus shutout ADO Lakers 9-0. The Rotterdam-squad rallied for five runs in the first inning. Neptunus finished the first half of the season in first place and qualified for the Play-Offs last weekend.

Vaessen Pioniers won 10-3 vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW and also had a productive first at bat, scoring four runs. Last Tuesday, Pioniers became the second team to qualify for the Play-Offs by finishing in second place in the first half.

The second half of the season begins with a new ranking, meaning all teams start with an 0-0 record again. The teams that finish in first and second place will then also qualify for the Play-Offs. When Neptunus and Pioniers again finish in the top-2, the teams in third and fourth place will qualify. The teams will begin both the Play-Offs (top-4) and Play-Downs (bottom-4) with half of the points they earned during the 42-game season.

UVV vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates

At Vleuten, L&D Amsterdam Pirates faced a 2-1 deficit vs. UVV when the ninth inning began. The squad then came alongside on a close call and went on to win 5-2 in 10 innings. It had rain hard briefly in the afternoon, but luckily, groundskeeper Frans van Elst made the field playable again.

Amsterdam was held to only five basehits in eight innings by UVV's starter Jurjen van Zijl, who had a good outing. The righthander walked two batters in the first inning, but one of them was caught stealing, while the second one was left behind. He then gave up an one-out single to Jesse Aussems in the third inning and walked Michael Duursma with two outs. But the inning then ended when Aussems was caugt stealing at third base.

In the fourth inning, Van Zijl saw Amsterdam take an 1-0 lead. Bas de Jong led off with a double, which was followed by an outfield-error that brought him to third base. Kenny Berkenbosch then walked and Percy Isenia followed with a single that brought in De Jong. Berkenbosch and Isenia advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Koen Nooij, but then the first was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a comeback-grounder by Rashid Gerard.

Amsterdam-starter Rob Cordemans had a strong start, as he retired the first nine batters in a row, including four strikeouts. In the fourth inning, the veteran righthander gave up a lead-off double to Norbert Jongerius, who then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Brennan Nijhof and scored the tying run on a single by Gilmer Lampe. After a grounder moved Lampe to second base, Cordemans gave up an RBI-single to Philip Ortez that gave UVV a 2-1 lead. This was the first game Ortez played for UVV this season. Last year, he was the leading hitter of Vaessen Pioniers with a .361 batting average.

In the fifth inning, Van Zijl gave up an one-out single to Remco Draijer, who stranded on second base. In the sixth, Berkenbosch led off for Pirates with a single, but also was left behind. Van Zijl then retired the side in the seventh and eighth inning.

Cordemans, who struckout eight batters, recovered strong after the fourth inning. He gave up a lead-off single to Jordan Illis in the fifth inning, but he was then eliminated after a successful pick-off. Cordemans then retired the next nine batters in a row. He then gave up an one-out single to Thomas Smits and was relieved by Daan Hendrix. He saw pinch-runner Rick Kuipers advance to second base on a grounder and then gave up a single to Norbert Jongerius that resulted in runners on first and third base. But the two were left as a groundout ended the inning.

Trailing 2-1, Amsterdam tied the score in the ninth inning. Van Zijl gave up a lead-off double to Percy Isenia, which led to three changes. Björn Hato was brought in as pinch-runner for Isenia and Duko Jansen (the announced starter for Saturday's game) took over the pitching for Van Zijl. Hato then moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Roelie Henrique, who was the third change in this situation. Moments later, Hato scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Rashid Gerard. It appeared that catcher Joris van Ballegooy received the ball in time from the outfield, but it was ruled that he missed tagging Hato and so, the score was tied.

In the home of the ninth, Daan Hendrix retired the side and so the game went into extra innings.

Pirates then struck with three runs in the top of the tenth inning. Tie-break runners Rashid Gerard (2nd base) and Bas Nooij (1st base) moved on a single by Jesse Aussems that loaded the bases. Remco Draijer followed with another single that gave Amsterdam a 3-2 lead and a wild pitch made it 4-2. An one-out grounder by Bas de Jong brought in the third run and lifted the lead to 5-2.

UVV was unable to do something back in its tenth at bat off of closer Jurrian Koks. He struckout Mike Bazuin and then Pirates turned a game-ending double play on a grounder by Jordan Illis.

The Haarlem-squad opened the score with one run in the second inning. With one out, Gario singled and Calvin Martinus walked. The bases got loaded when Jefferson Muzo also walked with two outs. Ronald de Bont, the starter for The Hawks, then issued another walk, this time for René Cremer, which brought in Gario. But Kinheim then left the bases loaded when a pop-fly ended the inning.

Kinheim added three runs in the third inning. With one out, Jeffrey Arends walked and then Gario hit an inside-the-park-homerun with two outs. Next batter Calvin Martinus was hit by a pitch and Sander Paap brought him to third base with a single. Martinus then scored when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Muzo to make it 4-0.

After two scoreless innings, Kinheim added two more runs in the sixth at bat off of new pitcher Henk van Heijningen, which were both unearned. Lead-off hitter René Cremer reached when Van Heijningen made a fielding error on his bunt and he then scored on a following double by Niels van Weert. With one out, Van Weert scored the next run on a grounder by Arends to make it 6-0.

And so, Kinheim appeared to be en route to a comfortable victory. But then things changed in the remainder of the game.

The Hawks got one run back in the home of the sixth inning off of starter David Bergman. With one out, Bob de Bruijn and Kevin Moesquit singled, then advanced on a grounder by Berend Ruben. A wild pitch then produced the first run for the home team.

Kinheim answered with two runs in the seventh, which also were unearned. Mervin Gario reached on an error and scored on a double by Calvin Martinus. The bases got loaded when Jefferson Muzo singled with one out and René Cremer was hit by a pitch. Martinus then scored on a sacrifice fly by Niels van Weert to make it 8-1, but the game was far from over.

Van Heijningen held Kinheim scoreless in the final two innings and almost became the winning pitcher, as The Hawks had a strong finish.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, David Bergman got two quick outs. But he then walked Jules Peters and gave up a single to Kevin van Veen. Remian Denis followed with a double that brought in both runners and next batter Bob de Bruijn added a triple that made it 8-4. De Bruijn stranded on third base when a pop-fly ended the inning.

In the home of the eighth, The Hawks got its first five batters on base safely and almost turned the game around in its favor. Jean-Paul Gulinck took over the pitching for Bergman, but he walked Berend Ruben, Joris Naber and Steven Wharwood and was quickly relieved by Pim Walsma. But Walsma then gave up an RBI-single to Gregory Trinidad and a 2-run single to pinch-hitter Berry van Donselaar that narrowed the deficit to 8-7. With runners on first and second base and still no outs, The Hawks now had a good chance of taking over the lead. The two baserunners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Shurendell Borgschot and then an important out followed when Remian Denis for an illegally batted ball. Hereafter, Arshwin Asjes took over for Walsma. With runners now on second and third base, Asjes ended the inning with a strikeout. He then also retired the side in the ninth to secure the one-run margin and earn a save.

In the afternoon, it had rained briefly in the area, but today, there were no problems with the clay in the infield and so, the game could be played in the evening. A week ago, on Thursday, the opener of the 3-game series against L&D Amsterdam Pirates was cancelled early in the morning, as the clay had become muddy due to rain.

Pioniers opened the score with four runs in the first at bat off of Sander Helmendach, but they led only 4-3 in the fifth inning. In the first, Zerzinho Croes led off with a single, then Dirk van 't Klooster doubled. An error on a grounder by Danny Rombley brought in the first run and a following sacrifice fly by Mark-Jan Moorman made it 2-0. Next, Mark Duursma walked and a double-steal brought both runners in scoring position. A grounder by Kevin Dirksen and single by Dè Flanegin then lifted the lead to 4-0.

In the fourth inning, HCAW got three runs back off of Elton Koeiman. Sergino Martis and Kevin Weijgertse began with singles, then Rossini Frolijk also singled to bring in a run. Hereafter, an error followed on a grounder by Kevin Nieveld, which led to the next run. A single by Max Clarijs made it 4-3, but then a force out and flyout ended the at bat.

In the remainder of the game, HCAW got only three more baserunners. In the fifth, Roy Seltenrijch singled with one out, but he was caught stealing in a double play after a strikeout. Koeiman then retired the side in the sixth and seventh inning, including three strikeouts. Swen Huijer then pitched the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off single to Linoy Croes, but he stranded on first base. Scott Ronnenbergh completed the game in the ninth. He struckout two more batters, but also gave up an one-out single to Kevin Nieveld, who also was left on first base.

Leading only 4-3, Pioniers added two runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Mark-Jan Moorman and Mark Duursma singled. After the bases got loaded when Kevin Dirksen walked, they scored on a single by Dè Flanegin. That brought in new pitcher Bob Klaarenbeek, who then ended the inning. Klaarenbeek gave up the next run in the sixth inning on a double by Moorman.

In the seventh, Pioniers took more distance by scoring three runs. Dirksen and Flanegin led off with singles, then Chris Williams followed with a runscoring single. Hereafter, Tom de Blok took over the pitching for HCAW. He began with a strikeout, but then gave up a single to Zerzinho Croes that loaded the bases. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Dirk van 't Klooster then lifted the lead to 10-3.
