HCAW surprises Pioniers; Kinheim escapes in Dordrecht; big wins Neptunus, Amsterdam
Nederlands
HOOFDDORP / DORDRECHT / THE HAGUE / VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Today (Saturday, June 7), all games were won by the visiting teams, but one of them was not expected to do so.

Mr. Cocker HCAW surprised with an 8-4 victory at Vaessen Pioniers. The Bussum-squad collected 15 basehits, including three by rookie Jelle Blaauw. Trailing 4-1, HCAW rallied for seven runs in the fifth inning to hand Pioniers only its second home loss of the season.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Corendon Kinheim, the two prime candidates to capture the third and fourth spot in the Play-Offs, both won today.

After winning 5-2 in 10 innings in the opener last Thursday, Amsterdam today won big vs. UVV, 12-1, in seven innings. Amsterdam registered 13 basehits, including four by Bas de Jong and three by Kenny Berkenbosch, who homered twice.

Kinheim led twice vs. Mampaey The Hawks, but the home team got alongside both times. When the ninth inning began, the score was 2-2. Kinheim then escaped in Dordrecht thanks to a 6-run rally to win 8-2. Dashenko Ricardo homered for Kinheim in the fifth inning to give to team a brief 2-1 lead.

DOOR Neptunus shutout ADO Lakers 14-0 in a 7-inning game. Gianison Boekhoudt homered twice for Neptunus. Misja Harcksen went the distance for Neptunus and gave up only two basehits.

Vaessen Pioniers vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW

At Hoofddorp, Mr. Pioniers lost its first home game a week ago on Saturday, May 31 when L&D Amsterdam Pirates won 5-3.

For HCAW, this was its first victory against Pioniers since June 13, 2011. That game also was played in Hoofddorp and HCAW then won 6-3. Rightfielder Jasper Keijzer is the lone HCAW-player, who also played in the 2011 game for the Bussum-squad. HCAW's centerfielder Linoy Croes then played for Pioniers. Mark Duursma, Kevin Dirksen, Zerzinho Croes and Dè Flanegin then also played for Pioniers, as they did this afternoon. Another fact of these games is that in 2011 Fred van Groningen Schinkel was the Home Plate Umpire and today, his son Stenar van Groningen Schinkel was behind the plate.

HCAW already had a good start of the game, taking an 1-0 lead in the first inning off of Steven van Groningen. Linoy Croes led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third base on an one-out single by Roy Seltenrijch. He then scored the first run of the game on a following sacrifice fly by Kevin Weijgertse. Hereafter, Jorin van Amstel walked, but HCAW left two runners behind.

In the second inning, HCAW left a runner on second base, another one on first base in the third and then was retired in order in the fourth at bat. Moments later, Pioniers rallied for four runs.

HCAW-starter Ivan Granados also gave a lead-off single in the first at bat, which was hit by 'the other' Croes. For Pioniers, it was Zerzinho Croes who singled, but he was caught stealing with two outs, ending the inning. Pioniers then left two runners on base in the second inning and a runner on first in the third at bat.

The home team then rallied for four runs with two outs in the home of the fourth inning. Mark-Jan Moorman and Mark Duursma led off with singles, but the first was forced on a comeback-grounder by Kevin Dirksen. After Granados struckout the always productive veteran Dè Flanegin, Dirksen and Duursma executed a double-steal and the bases got loaded when Chris Williams walked. Hereafter, rookie Max Draijer and Zerzinho Croes both delivered 2-run singles to give Pioniers a 4-1 lead.

With the lead, it appeared that Pioniers had turned the game its way. But the lead was shortlived, as it was HCAW that struck and turned the way in its favor moments later.

HCAW staged a 7-run rally in the top of the fifth inning, which would be decisive in the game. Van Groningen walked lead-off hitter Peter van Doesburg, who then stole second base and scored on an one-out single by Jasper Keijzer. Roy Seltenrijch then reached on an error and Kevin Weijgertse followed with a runscoring single to make it 4-3. Next, Jorin van Amstel also singled to bring in the tying run and Rossini Frolijk added another single to make it 5-4 in favor of HCAW. That led to a pitching change and Dennis Buring took over for Van Groningen. He was greeted with an RBI-single by rookie Jelle Blaauw. After a flyout accounted for the second out, HCAW got the bases loaded when Peter van Doesburg delivered the next basehit in his second turn at bat in the inning. Hereafter, Linoy Croes hit the seventh basehit in the inning, bringing in Frolijk and Blaauw to lift the lead to 8-4. A flyout then ended the at bat, but HCAW clearly had taken charge of the game.

The seven runs in one inning were the most for HCAW since it had scored eight runs in the sixth inning on May 5 last year in a 12-6 win at ADO Lakers. For Pioniers, these were the most runs it gave up in one inning in two years. On April 26, 2012, L&D Amsterdam Pirates scored seven in the first inning of a 10-1 victory in Amsterdam. On July 1, 2012, it was DOOR Neptunus that scored seven runs in the sixth inning of a 13-2 win in Hoofddorp.

It also were the last runs scored in this game. HCAW was held scoreless in the last four innings by relievers Sedley Karel and Scott Ronnenbergh. But Ivan Granados and then relievers Roel Bellinga and Leon Elshof held Pioniers scoreless in the last five at bats of the game. Both teams added only two more basehits in the remainder of the game.

Roy Seltenrijch led off with a single for HCAW in the sixth inning off of Sedley Karel, but Pioniers then turned a double play. In the seventh, Rossini Frolijk walked and Jelle Blaauw delivered his third basehit of the afternoon, but they stranded at second and third base. Scott Ronnenbergh then retired the side in the eighth and issued a lead-off walk in the ninth to Jorin van Amstel, but he was caught stealing.

In the home of the fifth, Granados walked a Pionier-batter with two outs, but he stranded on first base. The lefthander then retired the side in the sixth inning. In the seventh, the Venezuelan hurler gave up singles to Zerzinho Croes (bunt) and Dirk van 't Klooster, who advanced on a grounder. But Granados then struckout Moorman and a flyout left the two behind in scoring position.

In the eighth, Roel Bellinga retired the side. He then walked lead-off hitter Max Draijer in the ninth and was relieved by Leon Elshof. He struckout Zerzinho Croes and then saw Dirk van 't Klooster ground into a game-ending double play.

Mampaey The Hawks vs. Corendon Kinheim

At Dordrecht, Corendon Kinheim led twice vs.

Kinheim today played without Jeffrey Arends and Niels van Weert, who both were suspended for one game after arguing a strikeout-call a week earlier. Designated hitter Bryan Engelhardt also didn't play this afternoon for Kinheim. With this, Kinheim missed its three leading hitters in today's game. Van Weert leads the team with a .352 average, followed by Arends (.316) and Engelhardt (.297).

Bob de Bruijn, who has the second-most hits of the team (20), and Rodney Michel, who is the team's third best hitter with a .277 average, didn't play today for The Hawks. But the team from Dordrecht added American Tony Enos to its roster earlier in the week. Enos played for the team in the past and today made his comeback, was the short stop and hit a double.

Kinheim took a lead twice, but was unable to take more distance off of Venezuelan Danny Forte, who threw seven fine innings. After being retired in order in the first at bat, Kinheim took an 1-0 lead in the next inning. With two outs, Sven van de Sanden walked, then the bases got loaded when Calvin Martinus and his brother Bruce Martinus both singled. A single by Jefferson Muzo then brought in the first run, but Kinheim left the bases loaded as a flyout ended the inning.

The Hawks immediately came alongside in the home of the second inning. Kinheim-starter Nick Veltkamp hit lead-off hitter Steven Wharwood with a pitch, then reached second base safely on a throwing error on a force play-grounder by Gregory Trinidad. The bases got loaded when Berry van Donselaar singled. With one out, Wharwood scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Joris Naber, but two runners were left behind.

In the third inning, Kinheim's Quintin De Cuba tried to stretch an one-out double into a triple, but was eliminated at third base. The team the left two runners in the fourth inning. The Hawks was retired in order in the third, then stranded a runner in the fourth at bat when Kinheim turned a double play.

Kinheim got back on top in the fifth inning when Dashenko Ricardo homered with two outs. Kinheim then turned another double play in the home of the fifth.

In the sixth, the Haarlem-squad got its first two batters on base when Sven van de Sanden singled and Calvin Martinus walked, but they were left on second and third base after a line drive by René Cremer ended the inning. For The Hawks, Tony Enos led off the sixth with a ground-rule double off of new pitcher Pim Walsma, but he was then eliminated in a rundown that followed on a grounder to short by Steven Wharwood.

After Kinheim left a runner in the top of the seventh, The Hawks tied the score in the home half. Lead-off hitter Kevin van Veen reached on an error and Joris Naber singled. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jules Peters, but then Van Veen was thrown out at the plate, trying to score on a grounder to short by Kevin Moesquit. Berend Ruben then followed with a single that brought in Naber and tie the score, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the eighth, Kinheim left two runners off of new pitcher Evan Simons, while The Hawks stranded one off of closer Arshwin Asjes.

Kinheim then struck with six runs in the top of the ninth inning on seven basehits and two errors. Björn Henrichs (bunt) and Quintin De Cuba began the rally with a single. Next, Thomas Bos entered the game as pinch-runner for Henrichs to make his big league-debut. Bos is the son of former Haarlem Nicols/Kinheim/National Team-player Frank Bos. Moments later, Bos was safe on third base when a fielding error was made on a possible double play-grounder by Dashenko Ricardo, which loaded the bases. Bos then scored the go-ahead run when Mervin Gario followed with a single. Hereafter, Sven van de Sanden also singled in a run and when an outfield-error followed, two additional runs could be scored. That led to a pitching change and Edilberto Oropesa took over for Simons. He enabled Van de Sanden to advance on a wild pitch, then gave up an one-out, RBI-single to Bruce Martinus, followed by a double by Jefferson Muzo. Martinus was then eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder by René Cremer. Muzo advanced to third on the play and that brought Thomas Bos to the plate, who now turned from pinch-runner to pinch-hitter. He then delivered an RBI-single in his first big league at bat to lift the lead to 8-2.

In the home of the ninth, Bos stayed in the game and played at second base, which also was the position his father played for many seasons. And the ninth really was the inning for the rookie, as he made two outs, including the final one of the game.

Amsterdam struck early and already led 8-1 after three innings off of Duko Jansen. The veteran righthander was the announced starter for today's game, but also pitched the final two innings relief of last Thursday's 10-inning loss. Jansen then threw 18 pitches and kept his start for today.

Pirates scored three runs in the first at bat. With one out, Björn Hato reached on an error, who then scored on a double by Bas de Jong. Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a homerun and that gave Amsterdam a quick 3-0 lead.

UVV got one run back in the home of the first inning off of Kevin Heijstek. Norbert Jongerius and Brennan Nijhof led off with singles. The latter then was forced out on a grounder by Gilmer Lampe, but then Dennis De Quint brought in a run with a grounder.

Amsterdam answered with a 4-run rally in the second inning with two outs. Lead-off hitter Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch, then moved on an one-out single by Remco Draijer. After the two had advanced on a grounder, they scored on a single by Bas de Jong. Hereafter, Kenny Berkenbosch hit his second homerun in two innings to lift the lead to 7-1.

Amsterdam added another run in the third inning when Rashid Gerard led off with a double and scored on an one-out grouder by Bas Nooij.

After two scoreless innings, Amsterdam scored its next two runs in the sixth at bat. The bases got loaded when Duko Jansen hit Björn Hato with a pitch, gave up a single to Bas de Jong and walked Kenny Berkenbosch. Hereafter, Thijs Steenwijk took over for Jansen. With one out, he saw Hato score on a passed ball and then the next run was scored when Rashid Gerard grounded out.

Amsterdam reached the 10-run difference by scoring twice in the seventh inning. Jesse Aussems led off with a walk and scored when Remco Draijer followed with a triple. The latter then scored on an one-out single by Bas de Jong. Hereafter, Pirates got the bases loaded when Kenny Berkenbosch and Rashid Gerard (with two outs) both walked. The bases were left loaded when the inning ended on a grounder by Patrick Bok.

After giving up the run in the first inning, Kevin Heijstek retired the side in the second inning. He gave up an one-out single to Norbert Jongerius in the third, but he was left behind.

In the fourth inning, UVV got the bases loaded with one out, but failed to score. Dennis De Quint led off with a single, then Mike Bazuin and Giovanni Samboe both singled with one out. The inning ended when Amsterdam turned a double play on a grounder by Joris van Ballegooy.

UVV then left a runner in the fifth and two in the sixth off of Heijstek, who was relieved by Chris Mowday in the seventh. The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Rick Kuipers, then Amsterdam turned another double play and a groundout ended the game.

Earlier in the week, ADO Lakers added two new players to its roster, who both played today. Mayron Girigori, the brother of pitcher Jurandy, was the leftfielder and went 0-for-2. American Greg Hansen was the starting designated hitter and struckout in his first at bat in the Dutch big league. Hansen is a pitcher, who in May ended his college-career with the Cowboys, the baseball-team of New Mexico Highlands University. There, he pitched in 14 games (all starts) and was 7-5. In 81 2/3 innings, the righthander struckout 37 batters, walked 11 and gave up 108 basehits (including eight homeruns) and 68 runs (48 earned), finishing with a 5.29 ERA.

Like L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. UVV, Neptunus struck early and held a 10-0 lead after three innings.

The Rotterdam-squad rallied for six runs with two outs in the first at bat off of Timo van Ancum. Stijn van der Meer led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Benjamin Dille. Next, Raily Legito walked and then another force out was made on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp, but a following throwing error trying to complete a double play led to the first run. Kemp advanced to second base and stole third base, then scored when Gianison Boekhoudt hit a 2-run homerun. Gyenuar Lopez then walked and Adrian Anthony singled, followed by a runscoring single by Shaldimar Daantji. With runners on first and third base, Daantji stole second base, then Anthony was able to score when a throwing error to second base followed. A single by Daniel Fernandes then lifted the lead to 6-0. The inning ended when the latter was caught stealing.

Four runs were then added in the third inning. Boekhoudt led off with a walk and Lopez doubled, then Anthony delivered an RBI-single. With one out, an error on a grounder by Fernandes produced the next run and also brought in a new pitcher. Jurandy Girigori took over for Van Ancum, but he loaded the bases by walking Van der Meer. A force play-grounder by Dille and a single by Legito then increased the lead to 10-0.

The next run was scored in the fourth inning when Gianison Boekhoudt led off with his second homerun of the game.

Neptunus was then held scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning by Jurandy Girigori, who retired six batters in a row. But then, three more runs were scored in the top of the seventh inning on a double by Benjamin Dille and single by Dwayne Kemp, which made it a 14-0 score.

Neptunus-pitcher Misja Harcksen gave up an one-out single to Joshua Zara in the first inning, but he was forced out. In the third, the righthander walked Kelvin Knape with one out and ended the inning by eliminating him with a pick-off on first base. The second hit Harcksen gave up came thanks to a baserunner. Lead-off hitter Joshua Zara reached on an error in the fourth inning. With two outs, Zara touched the batted ball hit by Martijn Riphagen. And so, Zara was ruled out, but Riphagen was credited with a single.

Harcksen retired the side in the fifth and sixth inning. He then walked Christian Diaz and Glenn Romney to begin the seventh inning, but followed with three strikeouts to end the game.

This was the first complete game in the big league for Harcksen, who lifted his record to 5-0.
