Another day, same result, four more rainouts
Nederlands
HAARLEM / HOOFDDORP / AMSTERDAM / ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Another day, more rain and thus more cancellations. Today (Sunday, May 11), all four scheduled games in the Dutch big league rained out again for the third time in the last four days. On Friday, three of the four games rained out, as only Mr. Cocker HCAW and Corendon Kinheim were able to play a make-up game.

On Thursday, all four regular scheduled first games of this weeks 3-game series rained out and were re-scheduled for the next day. Besides the above mentioned game, three of the games rained out again and were re-scheduled for coming Tuesday (May 13).

On Saturday, all four regular scheduled second games of the series also rained out. Three of the games were re-scheduled for Monday (May 12), with the fourth being added to the Tuesday-schedule.

That brings us to today, which had the third games of the 3-game series scheduled. And again, the result was the same. In rained throughout the night and in the morning and that resulted in the first cancellations. The game between DOOR Neptunus and Mampaey The Hawks initially had a minor chance to go underway. It didn't rain that hard in Rotterdam and the field looked acceptable about an hour before the scheduled starting time of 2 PM. However, the rain became some heavier and shortly after 2 PM, this game became the fourth and last to also be cancelled.

Three of today's games were re-scheduled for Tuesday, May 20. The game between Corendon Kinheim and Mr. Cocker HCAW was moved to Monday, as both teams only had a make-up game scheduled for Tuesday.

And so, a total of 15 games have now been cancelled since Thursday, which is a record.

The last time that there were this many rainouts on consecutive days was in 2011, which had two long rainy periods that year. Between Thursday, July 14 and Monday, July 18, there were eleven cancellations. Five of those games went underway, but were halted by rain before becoming valid. Two scheduled games could be played back then, but one of them was stopped after five innings due to the rain. Later in the 2011 season, there were nine cancellations from August 27-29 during the Play-Offs and Play-Downs.

With today's cancellations, a new situation arises for the Head Coaches and Pitching Coaches of the eight teams. They already had to adjust their pitching rotations the last few days, but now the opener of the next 3-game series approaches next Thursday. All teams have a make-up game on Monday and on Tuesday and so, the pitching rotations have to be adjusted again and the coaches now also have to look ahead to the upcoming series. Almost all scheduled starters for the first games are now out of the rotation and are moved to Thursday-evening to open the next series.

It will some busy days for the schedule-makers of the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association. Besides the 15 cancellations since last Thursday in the Dutch big league, all five double-headers (ten games) in the softball big league also rained out this weekend. Besides these 25 games at the highest level, at least 170 more baseball and softball-games throughtout the country in different divisions have been reported to be cancelled due to the weather conditions. About 40 games have been reported to be played on Friday, Saturday or Sunday in these lower leagues mostly were played in the southern provinces of Noord-Brabant and Limburg. Not included in the above mentioned totals are the many games scheduled in the several youth leagues (baseball and softball), which also had a lot of rainouts this weekend.

For Monday-morning, more rain is predicted (80%). In the afternoon, it might clear up a little, but then it's up to the ground crews (and maybe the umpire-crews) to determine whether the fields are playable after almost five days of ongoing rain. Better weather conditions are expected for Tuesday.

Vaessen Pioniers vs. UVV

At Hoofddorp, the game between Vaessen Pioniers and UVV was cancelled early due to the weather conditions. The game is re-scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.

As of now, Pioniers is the lone team that sticks to its original pitching rotation. That means that LHP Ricardo Hernandez Sanchez will remain the starter for the first upcoming game, which is on Monday-evening at Vleuten. RHP Steven van Groningen then is scheduled to start on Tuesday and RHP Elton Koeiman then will move to Thursday to become the starter for the next series against Mampaey The Hawks.

UVV initially hadn't named its starters yet for this series, but now RHP Duko Jansen has been named as its starting pitcher for Monday-evening. Jansen also was the pitcher who started the last game of UVV on Sunday, May 4 against DOOR Neptunus. The next four playing opportunities for UVV all rained out. This means that when Monday's game can be played, Jansen will make a start in two consecutive games.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. ADO Lakers

At Amsterdam, the game between L&D Amsterdam Pirates and ADO Lakers was cancelled in the morning, as the playing site in Amsterdam simply was unplayable after the rain that fell during the night and in the morning hours. The game is re-scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.

Initially, RHP Rob Cordemans was named as starting pitcher for Amsterdam Pirates for the fourth day in a row, but he is now out of the rotation. Cordemans now will be the starter in the opening game next Thursday vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW. But the Amsterdam-rotation remains intact for the upcoming days, meaning righthanders Kevin Heijstek and Jos de Jong will start on Monday and Tuesday respectively in the make-up games, which both will be played in The Hague.

ADO Lakers also adjusted its pitching rotation, as RHP Ibrahin Redan is also out of the rotation. The announced starters for Monday and Tuesday remain the same, being lefthander Glenn Romney and righthander Jeremy Winkel. It was also confirmed that Redan now will start Game 2 of the upcoming series vs. UVV on Saturday, while RHP Timo van Ancum will start the opener on Thursday-evening. On Sunday, RHP Dennis Burgersdijk, who was sidelined with an injury, might return to the rotation.' This means that ADO Lakers has now named five different starting pitchers for the coming days.

Corendon Kinheim vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW

At Haarlem, the game between Corendon Kinheim and Mr. Cocker HCAW was cancelled early, around 11:30 PM due to the condition of the field and the ongoing rain. The game is re-scheduled for Monday-evening. Both teams had room on this day, as they were the lone ones to be able to play a make-up game last Friday.

Kinheim and HCAW both confirmed that the announced starters for today are moving with the game to tomorrow. That means that there will be a match-up between lefties Nick Veltkamp (Kinheim) and Ivan Granados (HCAW) on Monday-evening in Haarlem.

It was also confirmed that, as of now, the announced starters for Tuesday-evening in Haarlem will remain the same, being righthanded rookies Glenn Wassink (Kinheim) and Maickel Rietel (HCAW).

And with that, their original Game 1 starters, who pitched last Friday, are now available to start Thursday-evening in the opener of their next series. RHP David Bergman then takes the mound for Kinheim against DOOR Neptunus (which is confirmed), while RHP Sander Helmendach will be the probable starter for HCAW vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates (not yet confirmed).

DOOR Neptunus vs. Mampaey The Hawks

At Rotterdam, there was hope that the game between DOOR Neptunus and Mampaey The Hawks might be played. There was a brief rain shower about an hour before the scheduled starting time of 2 PM and the field appeared to be acceptable at that moment.

However, a heavier rain shower then followed later and so, the field became unplayable. The game is re-scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.

Neptunus changed its rotation for the coming make-up games in Dordrecht. Game 1 starter LHP Diegomar Markwell already was removed from the rotation after Saturday's cancellation, but RHP Orlando Yntema (who would start today) is now also out of the rotation. They are now moved to their regular turn to pitch in the upcoming series against Corendon Kinheim with Markwell starting on Thursday and Yntema on Saturday. The starter for Monday's make-up game now will be RHP Misja Harcksen. RHP Floris Timmer, who was to be the starter in Game 3 in the original rotation before Thursday, now takes the mound on Tuesday.

When Monday's game can be played, Harcksen make a start for Neptunus in two consecutive games, as he also started the last game on Sunday, May 4 vs. UVV. Since then, four games rained out.

The Hawks moved today's scheduled starter RHP Quinn Tramm to Tuesday's game and inserted RHP Evan Simons to start on Monday. And this makes The Hawks the second team that will use its regular Game 1 starter in the make-up game on Monday. When that game can be played, this makes Simons unavailable for next Thursday's opener against Vaessen Pioniers.
