Andrelton Simmons hits grand slam homerun!
Nederlands
DENVER, Colorado (USA) - Andrelton Simmons has hit a grand slam homerun on Tuesday-evening (June 10) in the 13-10 victory of the Atlanta Braves against the Colorado Rockies. Last year, Simmons participated in the World Baseball Classic with the Netherlands National Baseball Team, which then reached the semi-final.

At Coors Field in Denver, the Braves rallied for seven runs in the first at bat, highlighted by the grand slam.

Colorado-starter Juan Nicasio gave up seven basehits to the first eight batters he faced. The Dominican righthander gave up a lead-off double to Jason Heyward, who then scored on a following triple by B.J. Upton. A grounder by Freddie Freeman enabled Upton to score the next run.

Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson both singled. After a coaching visit, Nicasio gave up an RBI-single to Tommy La Stella and that brought Andrelton Simmons in the batter's box. Nicasio's first delivery to the Curaçao-born Simmons was a ball and the 24-year old short stop then belted the next pitch over the centerfield-fence for the first grand slam in his Major League-career to lift the lead to 7-0. Two pop-ups then ended the inning.

Despite the big lead, the game wasn't decided yet, as the Rockies also had a productive evening. The Braves never lost the lead, but after five innings, they were leading only 10-8. Atlanta then added three runs in the top of the sixth to make it 13-8. Colorado was able to score another run in the seventh and eighth inning to narrow the deficit to 13-10, but that also was the final score.

Atlanta collected 16 basehits, including three homeruns. Besides the grand slam by Simmons in the first inning (his fifth homerun of the season), Freeman and Gattis both hit a solo-homerun in the fourth. Wilin Rosario homered for the Rockies.
