Neptunus wins; Pioniers vs. Pirates postponed
Nederlands
HOOFDDORP / ROTTERDAM / VLEUTEN / THE HAGUE (Neth.) - Only three of the four scheduled games were played today (Thursday, May 29). The match-up between league-leaders Vaessen Pioniers and L&D Amsterdam Pirates was cancelled due to the field condition in Hoofddorp.

The 3-game series between Pioniers and Pirates is the most important these days, as it will decide the first and second place in the first half of the season and with that, the qualification for the Play-Offs. There are several theoretical scenarios that the top-2 places can be decided during the two make-up games coming Tuesday or even after that when the first half ends in a 3-way tie. But realistically, the Pioniers vs. Pirates series will bring the decisions.

And so, today's opener was much anticipated, but unfortunately had to be cancelled. The condition of the infield in the new stadium in Hoofddorp was not acceptable to play and so, the game was cancelled early in the morning. The problem was that the clay which has been used for the infield (instead of the regular gravel) had become muddy after the rain of the last two days.

The game is re-scheduled for Friday-evening, May 30, in Hoofddorp, starting at 7:30 PM.

DOOR Neptunus won 5-1 vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW to move into a tie for second place with Amsterdam, but has the advantage of having won their head-to-head series last week, 2-1. Neptunus broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth inning. Winning pitcher Diegomar Markwell allowed only two hits in the seven innings he pitched.

Corendon Kinheim shutout UVV 2-0. Winning pitcher David Bergman went eight innings and gave up six hits. Bryan Engelhardt led off the sixth inning with his sixth homerun of the season.

Mampaey The Hawks won 2-1 at ADO Lakers. The Hawks took an 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, then added an important insurance run in the top of the ninth. In the home of the ninth, ADO Lakers scored its lone run. Winning pitcher Ronald de Bont gave up only three hits in six innings, then Henk van Heijningen completed the game.

The two make-up games for coming Tuesday were already mentioned above. Today it was announced that the game between Mampaey The Hawks and DOOR Neptunus, which is a home game for The Hawks, will be played in the stadium of Neptunus in Rotterdam. Initially, Neptunus was to play home that evening against Vaessen Pioniers and several (sponsor)activities, as well as a barbecue, were planned. Therefore, to let these activities continue, it has been decided that the game between The Hawks and Neptunus will be played in Rotterdam, but will remain a home game for The Hawks. In July, when the teams meet again, Neptunus will then play its home game at the site of The Hawks in Dordrecht.

For the record, today was the coldest May 29 in Dutch history, because of a thick layer of clouds covering the sun. It was some 12 degrees Celsius (53,6 Fahrenheit) in the early morning, but the average today was only 10 or 11 degrees Celsius (50-51,8 Fahrenheit). The previous record was 12,3 degrees Celsius (54 Fahrenheit) on May 29, 1983.

Vaessen Pioniers vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates

The game between Vaessen Pioniers and L&D Amsterdam Pirates already was cancelled early this morning, reportedly around 10 AM. The reason for the cancellation was that the clay which is used for the infield, the catching-area/batter's box and pitching mound was to muddy due to the rain of the last two days. A protective tarp to cover the infield hasn't arrived yet. Instead of the regular gravel, which is used on other sites, a sort of clay is used in the new stadium in Hoofddorp.

On some photos, it appeared that the playing field looked fine, but the site was checked by an official and it was confirmed that the clay indeed was too muddy to play.

The game was re-scheduled for Friday-evening, May 30 in Hoofddorp.

With the cancellation, Pioniers won't face Amsterdam's pitching ace Rob Cordemans. The righthander was scheduled to pitch the opener this afternoon. But he won't pitch on Friday-evening, as he is getting married in the afternoon. For that reason, he also won't be with the team during the weekend for the second and third game.

And so, Pirates had to change its rotation for the series with the starters for Game 2 and Game 3 moving ahead. Starting on Friday will be Kevin Heijstek and Jos de Jong moves to Game 2 on Saturday. Chris Mowday now has been named to start Sunday's Game 3.

Max Clarijs returned behind the plate as catcher for HCAW. Since May 17, he was sidelined with an elbow-injury after being hit by a bat in the follow-through of batter Bas Nooij of L&D Amsterdam Pirates.

Starting pitchers Diegomar Markwell (Neptunus) and Sander Helmendach (HCAW) both threw five scoreless innings. In that span, both teams stranded three runners.

HCAW got two runners in scoring position. In the first inning, Roy Seltenrijch walked with two outs, but was left at first base. In the second at bat, it was Jelle Blaauw, who walked with one out and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jim Froberg. And in the fifth, Blaauw led off with a single and moved to second on a grounder by Froberg, but stranded again.

For Neptunus, Benjamin Dille walked with one out in the first inning, then two flyouts followed. In the third, the home team left two runners. Mourik Huijser led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Stijn van der Meer. Hereafter, Dille walked, but a line out ended the inning. In the fifth, Huijser reached on an error, but he was caught stealing.

In the sixth, HCAW got another baserunner when Dillon True singled with one out, but then Seltenrijch grounded into a double play.

In the bottom of the sixth, Neptunus opened the score with three runs. Stijn van der Meer led off with a walk, then the bases got loaded when Benjamin Dille and Raily Legito both singled. Helmendach then struckout Dwayne Kemp, but walked Gianison Boekhoudt to bring in the first run. A single by Gyenuar Lopez then lifted the lead to 3-0.

HCAW got a run back in the eighth inning off of Jorian van Acker, who came on to relief Markwell. He gave up a lead-off single to Jim Froberg, who stole second base with one out. Van Acker then hit Peter van Doesburg with a pitch, walked Dillon True with two outs and then also hit Roy Seltenrijch with a pitch, resulting in a run. But HCAW left the bases loaded when a flyout ended the inning.

Neptunus took some more distance in the home of the eighth inning. With two outs, Adrian Anthony tripled and Mourik Huijser walked, then Daley Paalvast took over the pitching for Bob Klaarenbeek, who had entered the game the inning before. Paalvast was greeted with a 2-run triple by Shaldimar Daantji that lifted the lead to 5-1.

Winning pitcher David Bergman went eight innings and gave up six hits. Bryan Engelhardt led off the sixth inning with his sixth homerun of the season.

Kinheim scored quickly in the first inning off of Belgian righthander Kenny Van Den Branden. René Cremer led off with a walk, then moved to third base on a passed ball. A strikeout followed, but a following grounder by Dashenko Ricardo then brought in Cremer. But this was to be Kinheim's lone run in the first five innings. In the sixth inning, Bryan Engelhardt led off with a homerun to double Kinheim's lead.

Kinheim stranded nine runners in the game and failed to add more runs. The Haarlem-squad got two baserunners in the fourth at bat when Ricardo led off with a single and Engelhardt walked, but then, a strikeout, flyout and another strikeout followed. Two runners also were left behind in the fifth inning. With one out, Jefferson Muzo walked and stole second base, then moved to third on a throwing error by Van Den Branden during a pick-off with two outs. Next, Björn Henrichs walked, but the Belgian hurler again prevented Kinheim from scoring.

Leading 2-0, Kinheim got another chance to enlarge its lead in the eighth inning. Ricardo led off with a double and then Engelhardt was hit by a pitch. A flyout followed and then Van Den Branden struckout the next two batters. Gilian van Lith threw the ninth inning for UVV.

David Bergman saw UVV getting close to the tying run in the second inning. He gave up a lead-off double to Dennis De Quint, who then advanced to third on a grounder by Mike Bazuin. Bergman then ended the inning with two strikeouts.

The righthander gave up a 2-out single in the third and an 1-out single in the fourth, but encountered no problems. Bergman then retired the side in the fifth and sixth inning. In the seventh, he gave up a lead-off single to Gilmer Lampe, who stole second base with one out. With two outs, Lampe was caught stealing after a pick-off by Bergman.

In the eighth, UVV got two baserunners off of Bergman. Joris van Ballegooy led off with a single, then Sam van Dijck singled with one out. Bergman held UVV scoreless as a flyout and strikeout completed the at bat.

In the ninth, Arshwin Asjes pitched for Kinheim. He gave up an one-out single to Gilmer Lampe, but held the shutout intact and earned his league-leading fourth save.

Winning pitcher Ronald de Bont gave up only three hits in six innings, then Henk van Heijningen completed the game.

The game remained scoreless for four innings, but it was The Hawks that frequently threatened to open the score off of starter Timo van Ancum.

In the first inning, Bob de Bruijn led off the game with a walk, then Berend Ruben reached on an error. But then, the defense of ADO Lakers made some fine outs. De Bruijn was forced out on third base on a bunt by Rodney Michel, then Ruben was caught stealing at third base moments later. Shortly thereafter, Michel moved to third base when Steven Wharwood reached on an error, but a force out ended the inning.

In the second inning, Berry van Donselaar led off with a single and Gino Hersilia singled with one out, but then Van Ancum struckout the next two batters. In the third, Berend Ruben led off with a double, but stranded on third base.

ADO Lakers was held to only one basehit in the first four innings by Ronald de Bont. The veteran righthander walked lead-off hitter Jason Jakobus in the first inning, but then The Hawks turned a double play. He retired the side in the second at bat, including two strikeouts. In the third, the defense of The Hawks committed two errors, but held ADO Lakers scoreless.

The Hawks then opened the score in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Berend Ruben doubled and advanced when Rodney Michel reached on an error. A single by Steven Wharwood then made it 1-0.

The Hawks appeared to add a run in the seventh inning off of new pitcher Jurandy Girigori when it got the bases loaded with one out. Joris Naber led off with a single, but was forced out when Bob de Bruijn bunted towards Girigori. A single by Berend Ruben and hit by pitch for Rodney Michel then loaded the bases. However, a strikeout was followed by a pick-off at third base for an inning-ending double play.

In the home of the seventh, Christian Diaz led off with a single for ADO Lakers. Henk van Heijningen then took over the pitching for De Bont, but saw Diaz advance on a wild pitch. He then hit next batter Martijn Riphagen with a pitch. But the inning then turned the way of The Hawks when Diaz was caught stealing at third base and a grounder and flyout ended the inning.

After The Hawks left two runners in the eighth inning, the team added an important insurance run in the top of the ninth inning off of new pitcher Jeremy Winkel. With two outs, he gave up back-to-back doubles to Rodney Michel and Steven Wharwood that lifted the lead to 2-0.

In the home of the ninth, ADO Lakers then scored its lone run. With one out, Stephen Henson singled and scored on a following triple by Christian Diaz. A groundout and flyout followed, leaving Diaz at third base and gave Van Heijningen his second save of the season.
