Bogaerts, Schoop open MLB-season with basehit
Nederlands
BALTIMORE, Maryland (USA) - Dutch National Team-infielders Xander Bogaerts and Jonathan Schoop have begun the new Major League-season with a basehit in their first game. The two faced each other on Monday in the match-up between the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox, which was Opening Night in Major League Baseball. On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers already had played vs. the San Diego Padres. This was the third regular season game for the Dodgers, who had opened the season a week earlier with two victories against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Sydney (Australia).

In the weekend, the teams announced their 25-man rosters for the new season.

The Orioles included Jonathan Schoop on its roster and he started on Monday as at second base. Schoop was named to the roster on Saturday with three other players. In early September last year, Schoop was recalled to the Major League-team of Baltimore, then had to wait three weeks to make his debut at the highest level. In his first game, Schoop singled in his first at bat and later added a homerun in the third at bat.

Xander Bogaerts also was added to the roster of Boston late in the season and went on to play an impressive postseason, winning the World Series with the Red Sox.

Also in the weekend, the Cincinnati Reds named Dutch outfielder Roger Bernadina to its Opening Day-roster. Bernadina was a non-roster player during Spring Training, but batted .413 in 22 exhibition games and was selected for the main squad. In August last year, Bernadina was released by the Washington Nationals, then signed with the Philadelphia Phillies two days later. After the season, he became a Free Agent and on January 31, he signed with the Reds.

On Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks optioned Amsterdam-born short stop Mariekson (Didi) Gregorius to the Reno Aces, its Triple-A team. However, Gregorius did start the Major League-season with the Diamondsbacks, as he played in the first two games which were played in Australia against the Dodgers. There, he was 0-for-4, walked once and struckout twice. Chris Owings won the job as regular short stop for the Diamondbacks after the club returned home and continued Spring Training.

Last week, the Texas Rangers released Dutch outfielder Kalian Sams on Sunday.

On Monday, the Orioles won 2-1 vs. the Red Sox. Playing at home, the O's took an 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the the BoSox came alongside in the fourth at bat. The Orioles then re-took the lead in the home of the seventh when Nelson Cruz led off with a homerun.

Schoop, who batted ninth for the Orioles, led off the third inning with a single in his first at bat, but later was eliminated in an inning-ending double play.

Bogaerts batted seventh for the Red Sox and flied out with two runners on base in the top of the 2nd inning. In the seventh inning, he doubled in his third bat bat.
