Pioniers 2-hits DSS in victory
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - Vaessen Pioniers outscored DSS 6-1 on Saturday-afternoon (May 2).

Quintin De Cuba and Vince Rooi homered for Pioniers, while DSS hit only two basehits in this game, including one off of starter Lars Huijer, who pitched the first seven innings.

(May 2)

After stranding a runner in the first inning, Pioniers opened the score in the second at bat. Lead-off hitter Mark-Jan Moorman was hit by a pitch in an bat that begun with a discussion. Moorman stepped out of the batter's box, but his time-out wasn't granted and so, Home Plate Umpire Jan-Willem van der Paauw called a strike when pitcher Timo van Lingen threw the ball. Moments later, Moorman stepped out again and a brief discussion followed between Pioniers' Head Coach Robert Klaver and Van der Paauw. The game resumed and Moorman was hit by a pitch, then scored when Kevin Weijgertse tripled. Before this game, Weijgertse was hitting only .154 (4-for-26). He then scored himself on a 2-out double by rookie Paul Brands, who started in the outfield instead of Kevin Dirksen, who revovers from an injury.

DSS got one run back in the bottom of the third inning. Lex Leijenaar led off with a walk, then was safe when an error followed on a force play-grounder by Mitchel Dautzenberg. A rare situation then followed. After catching the ball from pitcher Lars Huijer, Pioniers-catcher Quintin De Cuba ran towards first base, where Dautzenberg appeared to be too far from first base. De Cuba chased Dautzenberg towards second base, meaning Leijenaar had to move towards third base. De Cuba then changed his focus to Leijenaar, who he drove towards third base, where third baseman Vince Rooi was awaiting his throw. Leijenaar would have been a sure out, but De Cuba threw the ball past Rooi into foul territory, meaning both runners advanced a base. Two outs followed, but then Tino van Erk singled through the rightside of the infield to bring in Leijenaar. Dautzenberg was also waved home, but was tagged out there by De Cuba after a thrown from rightfielder Dirk van 't Klooster.

After DSS stranded runners on first and second base in the fourth inning, Pioniers did the same in the fifth at bat.

Defensively, DSS got some nice plays from third baseman Seb Visser and short stop Mitchel Dautzenberg.

In the sixth, Mark van Deursen took over the pitching for starter Timo van Lingen, who again had a fine outing in his second career start in the big league. Van Deursen faced Quintin De Cub, who ran his count to 2-2. The next pitch was close, but made the count full, then De Cuba went after the next pitch and drilled it over the rightfield-fence. The homerun was the first hit at the DSS-site in the big league. Oh, for-the-record, it was hit at 3:42 PM.

Pioniers took more distance by scoring three runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Dirk van 't Klooster singled, then Vince Rooi homered. With two outs, Quintin De Cuba and Kevin Weijgertse both singled, then a run was added when Max Draijer doubled to make it 6-1.

After getting runners on first and second base in the fourth inning, DSS reached base only one more time. With the runners on first and second, the next 15 batters were retired in order. Starter Lars Huijer retired ten batters in a row, then his reliever Sedley Karel retired the next five. With two outs in the ninth inning, Karel gave up a single to Seb Visser, but then the final out followed.
