UVV wins vs. DSS, closes in on fourth place
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - UVV was outhit 10-8 by DSS on Thursday, which was the hottest July 2 in Dutch history, since weather measurements are registered.

Mark Smit went 3-for-3 for DSS, but the Haarlem-squad trailed from the first inning on.

The game was halted after seven complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

With the win, UVV took sole possession of fifth place in the second half of the season and is now only three points behind Corendon Kinheim, which played a 2-2 tie vs. HCAW tonight.

(July 2)

DSS-Head Coach Lennart Stut had changed his pitching rotation for the first time this season. For the first time, righthander Tim Halderman started the first game of a 3-game series. In the previous ten series, Halderman was the starter in Game 3 nine times. In the last series, he initially also was named started for Game 3, but then was used in relief in the second game when DSS had a lead against Vaessen Pioniers.

UVV-Head Coach Ferenc Jongejan used righthander Thijs Steenwijk as his starter in a series opener for the third week in a row.

UVV opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning off of Halderman. With one out, Tony Enos walked, as did Dennis De Quint with two outs. The two scored when Mike Bazuin followed with a double.

In the bottom of the first inning, DSS got one run back off of Steenwijk, but that could have been more. Mark Smit led off with a single, but was eliminated trying to stretch it into a double. Hereafter, DSS got the bases loaded when Lex Leijenaar and Mitchell Koot singled, then an error followed on a force play-grounder by Ryan Miner. A run was then scored on a grounder by Tino van Erk, but two runners were left behind when a strikeout ended the at bat.

UVV left two runners behind in the second inning, but added a run in the third. Gilmer Lampe then led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Bazuin, but the team again stranded two runners.

After DSS left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third inning, UVV scored another run in the top of the fourth. With one out, Joris van Ballegooy and Tony Enos singled, which led to runners on second and third base. Hereafter, the game was interrupted by rain, but continued after a 17-minute delay. Gilmer Lampe then delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Van Ballegooy and make it 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, DSS narrowed the deficit to 4-3, but this time left the bases loaded. With one out, the bases got loaded when Tommy van de Sanden walked, Sven Jongejans singled and Joffrey Heus reached on a bunt-single. Hereafter, Mark Smit also singled to bring in a run. With the bases still loaded, Ian Delemarre took over the pitching, but, after a flyout, he walked Mitchell Koot that led to another run. The inning ended and three runners were left behind when a pop-fly ended the inning.

In the top of the fifth, UVV took some more distance by adding two runs. With one out, UVV got the bases loaded when Brennan Nijhof singled and Norbert Jongerius and Jamie Verheyleweghen both walked. That led to a pitching change, as Jorn van Ingen relieved Halderman. He got a flyout from Dennis Ribbens, which was followed by a throwing error from the outfield, enabling Nijhof to scored. Moments later, a wild pitch led to the next run and increased the lead to 6-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, DSS got another scoring opportunity, but again left the bases loaded and scored only once. Tino van Erk led off with a walk and Seb Visser singled. The bases got loaded when an error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Tommy van de Sanden. Van Erk then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sven Jongejans. After the other two runners advanced on a passed ball, a strikeout followed, then Jerremyh Angela took over the pitching for UVV. He walked Mark Smit, which loaded the bases again, but then a flyout ended the inning.

UVV added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. The first thanks to a single by Brennan Nijhof, the second during an inning-ending rundown.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mitchell Koot led off with a double for DSS, but three outs followed. Oscar Meuris then pitched the seventh inning for UVV and struckout three batters.

The seventh inning also was the last in the slowpaced game, as the 10:30 PM curfew-time had been reached.
