Neptunus wins big vs. Heidenheim
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) -
Curaçao Neptunus won 15-1 vs. Heidenheim Heideköpfe (Germany) on Thursday-evening (June 4) to win its third game of the European Cup Tournament in Rotterdam.
Neptunus now shares first place with Rimini Pirates (Italy), whom it will meet on Saturday-afternoon.
While Neptunus and Rimini are both 3-0 and are the favorites to reach the final, nothing is decided yet.
Theoretically, there are several options remaining, including elimination of either Neptunus or Rimini, but for that to happen, we of course need the right combination of (surprising) results on the next two days.
Neptunus rallied for eight runs in the second inning, then was silenced in the next two at bats, but added seven more runs to end the game via the mercy-rule.
The team collected 18 basehits, including three by Stijn van der Meer and Christian Diaz.
Heidenheim registered six basehits in the game, which saw a lot of defensive changes on the side of Neptunus.
Day 3 of the tournament began with an 11-2 victory for Rimini Pirates (Italy) vs. Templiers Sénart (France).
The Italian squad scored all its runs in the first four innings, then was held scoreless by reliever Jacques Boucheron.
He took over in the fourth inning and gave up only three more basehits in the remainder of the game.
Besides that, Rimini also saw its 10-run difference disappear when Sénart scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, thanks to a 2-run single with two outs by Rolando Merino Betan.
And so, the game had to go the entire nine innings.
For Sénart, this was its second loss and the team now only has a theoretical chance of reaching the final.
An attractive and eventful game followed in the afternoon between KNTU Elizavetgrad (Ukraine) and Draci Brno (Czech Republic).
Halfway the seventh inning, the Czechs were leading 9-1, but the game was far from over.
Brno rallied for four runs in the first inning to take a comfortable early lead.
In the second inning, the Elizavetgrad-defense made a nice double play.
With runners on first and second base, Martin Schneider flied out to rightfielder Illia Velikii, who then made a nice throw to third baseman Denis Brechko.
He tagged out the lead runner, who tried to advance.
In the fourth inning, Schneider belted a big 2-run homerun for Brno.
In the seventh inning, Adam Hajtmar drove the ball into centerfield, where Kostyantyn Chukhas lost the ball in the sun and that led to a 2-run, inside-the-park-homerun!
In the bottom of the seventh and eighth inning, the Ukrainians scored five runs to narrow the deficit to 9-6, but then the Czechs scored two more runs in the ninth to win 11-6.
Elizavetgrad outhit Brno 15-14, but was eliminated for the final.

Neptunus left one runner in the first inning in which Heidenheim turned a double play.
But in the second at bat, the Rotterdam-squad rallied for eight runs, but only one of them was earned, as the German defense committed four errors.
It all began when lead-off hitter Rien Vernooij reached on an error.
Hereafter, Christian Diaz singled and then everyone was safe when an error followed on a sacrifice bunt by Urving Kemp.
With the bases loaded, Benjamin Dille delivered a runscoring single.
Shaldimar Daantji followed with a 2-run double and then more runs were added on a sac-fly by Stijn van der Meer and single by Dwayne Kemp.
The latter then stole second base, moved on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error to make it 6-0.
With two outs, Gianison Boekhoudt doubled and scored when Rien Vernooij again reached on an error.
A triple by Christian Diaz then accounted for the eighth run in this at bat.
Neptunus was held scoreless in the next two innings, leaving two runners in the third and one in the fourth inning.
Heidenheim reached base in the second and third inning, then scored its lone run in the fourth at bat off of starter Kenny Van Den Branden.
James McOwen led off with a single and moved when an error was made on a grounder by Simon Gühring.
The bases got loaded when Aaron Dunsmore also singled.
Next batter Luke Sommer then lined out, but a run was scored when Johannes Krumm singled.
Gühring also tried to score, but he was eliminated at the plate on a throw by leftfielder Urving Kemp.
A strikeout ended the inning and that was it for the German squad.
Neptunus rallied for four more runs in the fifth inning.
Shaldimar Daantji led off with a walk, an error followed on a force play-grounder by Stijn van der Meer and Dwayne Kemp reached on an infield-hit to load the bases.
A run was then scored when Raily Legito walked, which led to a pitching change.
A wild pitch, grounder by Boekhoudt and sac-fly by Vernooij then increased the lead to 12-1.
In the seventh inning, three runs were added off of new pitcher Lukas Antoniuk.
A single by Shurman Marlin led to the first run.
Hereafter, two runs were scored on a single by Adrian Anthony, but he ended up wrongly at first base, resulting in a sprain.
Anthony was replaced by pinch-runner Ruben Prins, who also took over as leftfielder in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the fifth inning, Floris Timmer took over the pitching for Van Den Branden and struckout two batters, while giving up one hit.
In the sixth, seven defensive changes followed, including new pitcher Gijs Timmer.
He walked a batter, but also struckout one.
Sebastiaan van den Koppel then pitched the seventh and last inning.
He hit the first batter he faced, then gave up a single, but was supported with a double play.
Van den Koppel then ended the inning and the game with a strikeout.
