Kinheim wins Urbanus Tournament
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - Corendon Kinheim has won this years edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus, Sr. Tournament. It was the fifth time that the Haarlem-club won the event and for the first time since 2011 when it had won two consecutive tournaments. Kinheim also won back-to-back in 2006-2007.

Kinheim secured the tournament-win with a 5-0 shutout against L&D Amsterdam Pirates, which won the event last year. Pirates had won its first two games, but now suffered its first loss of the exhibition season.

Whatever happened in the next and final game between Vaessen Pioniers and host HCAW wasn't important anymore, as the tournament-win was for Kinheim. A win by Pioniers created a 3-way tie between Kinheim, Pirates and Pioniers. As the head-to-head games between these teams created a new tie, the run-difference was decisive and that was in favor of Kinheim, thanks to the five runs scored against Pirates.

For-the-record, Pioniers closed the tournament with a 12-5 win vs. HCAW, resulting in the above mentioned scenario. This score also broke the streak of five consecutive shutouts.

The tournament is named after Charles Urbanus (Sr.), who was a longtime coach of Amsterdam-based OVVO and the Netherlands National Team. Having its origin in OVVO, Amstel Tijgers was created in the seventies. It was this club that originally organized the event for the first time in 1981 after Urbanus had passed away in 1980. After the tournament was held at the home site of Amstel Tijgers in Amsterdam from the beginning, the event switched to 1988 and 1989. The tournament then moved to the site of HCAW in Bussum, after the merger of that club with Amstel Tijgers in late 1988. Charles Urbanus is the uncle of Charles Urbanus (Jr.), who played for OVVO and Amstel Tijgers and currently is the Head Coach of Amsterdam Pirates.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Corendon Kinheim

The third and final day of the Urbanus Tournament began with the fifth shutout of the event, as Corendon Kinheim won 5-0 vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates.

Amsterdam-starter Kyle Ward held Kinheim scoreless in the first at bat. After a lead-off single by Kevin Moesquit, the lefthander followed with two strikeouts, while Moesquit in the meantime moved to third base via a stolen base and throwing error. A grounder ended the inning.

But in the second at bat, Kinheim struck with three runs. With one out, Dashenko Ricardo doubled and Sven van der Sanden singled. A following sacrifice fly by Calvin Martinus then opened the score. With two outs, Kevin Moesquit and Mervin Gario added runscoring singles to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Amsterdam got a chance of doing something back. With one out, Jesse Aussems singled and with two outs, the bases got loaded when Patrick Bok walked and Koen Nooij singled. But the three runners were left behind when a grounder ended the at bat.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Amsterdam-defense made two errors, but Kinheim was unable to turn them into runs. With one out, pinch-hitter Niels van Weert walked, then reached second safely when a pick-off-turned-caught-stealing ended in an error. With two outs, another error followed during a pick-off attempt on second base, but this time Van Weert couldn't advance, but would have been out when the error had not been made. A walk for Kevin Moesquit followed, which led to a pitching change. Dennis Burgersdijk took over and he got a flyout that ended the inning.

With a 3-0 lead, Kinheim changed its starting pitcher, as Scott Ronnenbergh took over in the bottom of the fourth inning. Amsterdam then again got runners in scoring position, but couldn't score. Ronnenbergh began with walks for Jesse Aussems and Rashid Gerard, who then advanced on a sac-bunt by Patrick Bok. But then Aussems was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder towards third base by Koen Nooij and a strikeout ended the at bat.

Kinheim added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning off of new pitcher Robin Schel. Pinch-hitter Jochem Koedijk led off with a single and stole second base. He then moved when next batter Niels van Weert also singled and he also stole second base, putting runners on second and third base. A sac-fly by Jasper Keijzer and an error then lifted the lead to 5-0.

And with that, Kinheim secured its tournament-win.

HCAW vs. Vaessen Pioniers

Vaessen Pioniers closed the tournament with a 12-5 win vs. host HCAW. The team collected only six basehits, but eleven batters reached base with a walk.

Pioniers scored twice in the first at bat, then was held scoreless in the next two innings, but decided the game from the fourth inning on, adding ten more runs.

The Hooffdorp-team took the lead quickly. HCAW-starter Sander Helmendach walked lead-off hitter Daniel Fernandes, then gave up a towering line drive-homerun to Dirk van 't Klooster, who is the all-time basehit recordholder. Later in the at bat, Helmendach was supported with a double play and he then retired the side in both the second and third inning.

Pioniers then decided the game with a 6-run rally in the fourth inning, hitting only one (!) basehit. Vince Rooi led off with a walk, then, with one out, the bases got loaded when Kevin Dirksen and Kevin Weijgertse also walked. Helmendach clearly couldn't find the strikezone anymore, as he followed with another walk for Djewi Appelman, then uncorked a wild pitch that led to the next run. A walk for rookie Milan Lammerts then re-loaded the bases and a following walk (the sixth in this inning) for Daniel Fernandes led to another run. Hereafter, HCAW's Head Coach Ralph Milliard brought in new pitcher Bob Klaarenbeek, but he was greeted with a 2-run single by Dirk van 't Klooster that lifted the lead to 7-0. A following sacrifice fly by Quintin de Cuba accounted for the eighth run, before the inning ended with a force out.

HCAW was able to do something back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pionier-starter Elton Koeiman had done his job, throwing his assigned first three innings. Ricardo Hernandez Sanchez took over, but he gave up three runs. Last season, the lefthander led the Pionier-staff with nine victories. Today, he saw the first three batters reach base safely. Brian Biezen led off with a walk, Roy Seltenrijch singled and Rossini Frolijk also walked to load the bases. Hernandez then strongly followed with a strikeout, but a force play-grounder by Aldrich Guzman, double by Rowan van Hoek and a wild pitch gave HCAW three runs.

Pioniers added a run in the fifth inning on a basesloaded walk for Daniel Fernandes. But the team also left three runners.

Pioniers then made it an 11-3 score in the sixth inning when Mark-Jan Moorman hit a 2-run homerun off of new pitcher Steven van Groningen, who last season pitched for Pioniers.

HCAW got two runs left in the home of the sixth inning. New pitcher Sedley Karel got two quick baserunners in Rossini Frolijk (walk) and Jarreau Martina (force play-error). After the two had advanced on a wild pitch, Karel followed with two strikeouts, but then gave up a 2-run single to Max Clarijs, that narrowed the deficit somewhat to 11-5.

Pioniers scored its last run in the seventh on a single by Van 't Klooster, who batted in five runs.
