But there also was the throwing of the ceremonial first pitch by Timothy Broas, the American Ambassador in the Netherlands.

In the game, Pioniers met Dutch champion Curaçao Neptunus and in the end was succcessful, coming from behind to win 6-5 in ten innings. Pioniers trailed 4-1 in the sixth, then 5-4 in the eighth inning when the game was interrupted by rain for 47 minutes. After it resumed, Pioniers came alongside and then won in ten innings.

Before the start of the game, Pioniers honored former players Mark Duursma, Dè Flanegin and Tommy van Limburg, as well as former coach Peter Barentsen.

Outfielder/first baseman/designated hitter Flanegin played his entire 22-year career for Pioniers (1992-2008; 2010-2014). To recognize their career and their long association with the club, Pioniers officially retired their uniform numbers 19 (Duursma), 21 (Van Limburg), 26 (Barentsen) and 30 (Flanegin).

After Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer had retired Neptunus in order in the top of the first inning, the home team opened the score moments later. In the bottom of the first, Daniel Fernandes led off with a single off of Kenny Van Den Branden. With one out, Fernandes moved to third base when a pick-off went errant and he then scored when Danny Rombley followed with a sacrifice fly.

Neptunus came alongside in the second inning. With one out, Rien Vernooij doubled, advanced on a grounder and scored on a double by Gyenuar Lopez, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the second inning, Pioniers got a runner on third base. Lead-off hitter Mark-Jan Moorman popped up in front of home plate, but that was missed by catcher Gianison Boekhoudt. However, Van den Branden picked up the ball and got it in time on first base to eliminate Moorman. Hereafter, Vince Rooi walked and later stranded on third base.

Both teams were held scoreless in the next three innings.

Huijer allowed only one batter to reach base in these three at bats. In the third, the righthander gave up a 2-out single to Benjamin Dille, but then retired seven batters in a row.

Van Den Branden allowed two batters to reach base. He walked Danny Rombley with two outs in the third, then retired the next six batters and gave up a 2-out double to Daniel Fernandes in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth inning, Neptunus broke the 1-1 tie by scoring three runs. Stijn van der Meer led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Benjamin Dille. Next, Raily Legito walked. The two runners got into scoring position when a pick-off at second base ended in a throwing error. With two outs, Rien Vernooij delivered a runscoring single that gave Neptunus a 2-1 lead and led to a pitching change. Elton Koeiman took over for Huijer, but he walked Christian Diaz, then gave up a 2-run single to Gyenuar Lopez, which increased the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Neptunus also was forced to change pitchers, as Pioniers reacted with two runs. With one out, Quintin De Cuba singled and advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, Vince Rooi walked, then both scored on a double by Kevin Dirksen. That brought in Kevin Kelly as reliever for Van Den Branden and he ended the inning with a strikeout.

Neptunus added another run in the seventh inning. Urving Kemp led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stijn van der Meer. Benjamin Dille followed with a single, but then a double play was made.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 5-4, but also left three runners behind. With one out, Daniel Fernandes reached on an error, then the bases got loaded when Dirk van 't Klooster and Danny Rombley singled. A sacrifice fly by Quintin De Cuba brought in the run, then the bases were re-loaded when Mark-Jan Moorman walked. However, the three runners stranded when a flyout ended the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Christian Diaz and Gyenuar Lopez singled for Neptunus with two outs, but then the inning ended with a force play-grounder.

The bottom of the eighth then proved to be decisive. With one out, Taylor Clemensia singled and Max Draijer walked. With two outs, the two runners moved on a wild pitch. With the runners now on second and third base, two outs and a 2-2 count on batter Dirk van 't Klooster, the game was interrupted when a heavy rainshower struck. After a 47-minute delay, the game resumed. And so, the runners returned to their base, Van 't Klooster stepped back into the batter's box and Kelly took the mound again. But his first delivery ended in a wild pitch that enabled Clemensia to score the tying run. On the next pitch, Van 't Klooster grounded out.

In the top of the ninth inning, closer Bayron Cornelisse took over the pitching for Pioniers. With two outs, he gave up a single to Benjamin Dille, who then stole second base and moved to third when a throwing error followed. But he stranded there, as Cornelisse ended the inning by striking out Raily Legito.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kevin Kelly retired the side and so, the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth inning, Benjamin Dille and Raily Legito were the tie-break runners for Neptunus. Gianison Boekhoudt then flied out and Rien Vernooij followed with a grounder that moved the runners. To set up a force play, Christian Diaz was walked intentionally, then a grounder ended the at bat, leaving three runners behind.

In the bottom of the tenth, Quintin De Cuba was the runner on second base and Mark-Jan Moorman on first for Pioniers. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Vince Rooi and this time, it was Neptunus that created a force play by walking Kevin Dirksen intentionally. But Pioniers was then more successful when next batter Taylor Clemensia drove the ball into leftfield for a sacrifice fly, enabling De Cuba to score the winning run.
