DSS avoids sweep vs. UVV
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - DSS trailed 1-0 on Sunday (July 5) vs. UVV, then rallied for three runs in the third inning en route to a 4-2 victory. With that, the Haarlems-squad avoided a 3-game sweep, as UVV had won on Thursday and Saturday.

DSS collected 11 basehits, including three by Tino van Erk and Joffrey Heus.

Joris van Ballegooy hit three of UVV's seven basehits.

(July 5)

DSS rookie-starter Mike Groen gave up a run in the first inning. He gave up a lead-off single to Joris van Ballegooy, who then advanced on a grounder. With two outs, Van Ballegooy appeared to be eliminated when he got in a rundown after a pick-off at second base by the catcher. But a throwing error by second baseman Joffrey Heus followed, resulting in Van Ballegooy not only reaching third base safely, but also being able to score. However, as Van Ballegooy should have been out, this action not only went into the books as an error, but also as a caught stealing.

In the second inning, UVV again got on base quickly. Mike Bazuin led off with a walk and Brennan Nijhof singled, but then a strikeout and double play followed.

DSS was retired in order in the first and second inning by starter Jurjen van Zijl, then rallied for three runs in the third at bat. Joffrey Heus and Sven Jongejans began with singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mitchel Dautzenberg. The bases got loaded when Mark Smit walked. Lex Leijenaar followed with a runscoring single. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Tino van Erk delivered a 2-run single to give DSS a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, UVV left runners on first and third base, then DSS added another run in the fourth at bat. Seb Visser led off with a triple, then scored on a following single by Joffrey Heus. With one out, DSS got another runner when Mitchel Dautzenberg was hit by a pitch, but this time UVV turned a double play on a following grounder.

In the remainder of the game, DSS was held scoreless, but did get into scoring position several times.
In the fifth, Tino van Erk tripled with two outs, but stranded on third base.
In the sixth, off of new pitcher Timo van Ancum, Heus (with one out) and Dautzenberg (with two outs) singled, but were left behind.
In the seventh, Ryan Miner and Tino van Erk singled with one out and advanced on a wild pitch, then the bases got loaded when Levine Gabriëls walked, but a double play ended the inning.
In the ninth inning, UVV turned another double play.

Leading 4-1, DSS turned a double play in the fifth inning, then Mike Groen retired the side in the sixth inning. Timo van Lingen took over for Groen in the seventh and also retired the side in the seventh, striking out two batters.

In the final two at bats, UVV got a chance to do something back, but added only one more run.

In the eighth, Dennis Ribbens and Joris van Ballegooy led off with singles. The two executed a double steal, but later were less successful. First, Ribbens was caught stealing in a rundown between third base and home plate after a pick-off by the catcher. After a strikeout, Van Ballegooy was caught stealing at third base to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, UVV scored its second run. Gilmer Lampe led off with a triple. With one out, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Bazuin, then Brennan Nijhof walked. Hereafter, closer Kevin Geestman took over the pitching and he fielded a comeback grounder by Jamie Verheyleweghen to force out Nijhof on second base and end the game.
