Neptunus also beats Rimini; Brno surprising 2nd finalist
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) -
Curaçao Neptunus, which qualified for the final on Friday, was in a luxury position on Saturday-afternoon (June 6).
As it already had qualified there was no pressure to win today against Rimini Pirates (Italy).
In the first game today, Draci Brno won, meaning it was in the hands of Neptunus who would become the second finalist.
A Neptunian victory would result in elimination of Rimini and thus qualification for Brno.
A loss would have resulted in qualification for Rimini.
And it appeared to go the way of the Italians, who were leading 3-0 after five innings.
But then Neptunus narrowed the deficit to 3-2 by scoring twice in the sixth.
The Rotterdam-squad then rallied for three runs in the seventh to won 5-3.
The last day of the preliminary round began with the match-up between Draci Brno and Heidenheim Heideköpfe (Germany).
To keep its chances of reaching the final alive, Brno had to win this game and then had to hope that Neptunus would win against Rimini.
Brno broke an 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth inning and went on to win 5-1.
Lithuanian pitcher Edvard Matusevicius started for Brno with Lithuanian umpire Arnoldas Ramanauskas behind the plate.
He gave up only three hits in the five innings he pitched.
The Czechs opened the score in the first inning, then Heidenheim came alongside in the fourth.
In the sixth at bat, Brno scored twice, thanks to an error and a sacrifice fly.
Two insurance runs were then added in the eighth at bat.
With the bases loaded, Jan Felki was hit by a pitch, then another run was added on a single by Arnošt Dubový.
Heidenheim left seven runners behind.
Matusevicius retired the first eleven batters in a row, then gave up a single and walked a batter in the fourth.
In the sixth, after giving up a lead-off single, Nathan O'Brian took over the pitching for Brno and became the winning pitcher.
Hereafter, some suspenseful hours followed for Brno, as it had to await the result of the game between Neptunus and Rimini.
Neptunus won and so, Rimini ended up in a tie with Brno.
And so, the Czechs qualified for the final, thanks to its win against the Italians on Friday.
The preliminary round ended in the evening with Templiers Sénart (France) winning 7-3 vs. KNTU Elizavetgrad (Ukraine).
Both teams scored twice in the first inning, then the French squad decided the game by scoring three runs in the second at bat.
With two outs, Felix Brown walked, stole second base and scored on a single by Jacques Boucheron.
Later in the at bat, Rolando Merino Betan also singled in a run, then the third was scored in a double steal-situation.
In the sixth, Sénart scored two more runs on a single by Jason Mahood and double by Merino Betan to lift the lead to 7-2.
Winning pitcher Leonel Cespedes struckout eight batters in seven innings.

Rimini opened the score in the second inning with two runs off of starter Gijs Timmer.
Giuseppe Mazzanti led off with a double and Riccardo Bertagnon singled, then Edgar Mundarain followed with a runscoring single.
With one out, the second run was scored via a sacrifice fly by Lorenzo Di Fabio.
Rimini added its third run in the fourth inning.
With one out, Mundarain singled, stole second base with two outs and scored when an error followed a single by Di Fabio.
Rimini-starter Alexis Candelario struckout eleven batters and gave up seven innings in 6-plus innings.
In the first five innings, Neptunus left three runners off of Candelario, including two on third base.
And so, it appeared that Rimini was en route to a victory and qualification for the final.
But in the sixth inning, Neptunus started to come back by scoring two runs.
Stijn van der Meer led off with a single and Dwayne Kemp doubled.
Hereafter, Candelario struckout Raily Legito, but then gave up a 2-run single to Rien Vernooij, who was then eliminated moments later.
Vernooij tripped over the leg of first baseman Mundarain, appeared to injure himself, but then was tagged out on the throw from rightfield to the short stop back to first base.
Christian Diaz followed with a single, but was left behind.
In the seventh inning, Neptunus struck with three runs.
Benjamin Dille led off with a single and advanced on a sac-bunt by Shaldimar Daantji.
Pinch-hitter Gianison Boekhoudt then walked and that brought in a new pitcher, Victor Moreno.
He was greeted with a runscoring single by Stijn van der Meer that tied the score.
Moments later, Van der Meer was forced out on second base on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp, but hereafter, Raily Legito delivered a 2-run double to give Neptunus a 5-3 lead.
In the eighth and ninth inning, Rimini left a runner on second base and was left empty-handed.
And that meant that the second finalist of last years European Champions Cup also was eliminated.
Last year, Rimini lost the best-of-three to T&A San Marino, which now was eliminated in the tournament in Paris (France).
