HCAW forces extra innings vs. Kinheim and closes with tie
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - The game between Corendon Kinheim and HCAW on Thursday-evening (May 7) ended in a 5-5 tie after eleven innings.

HCAW was leading 2-0 in the fifth inning, then saw Kinheim take over the lead (4-3) when Dashenko Ricardo hit a 3-run homerun.

HCAW came alongside in the eighth, took a 5-4 lead in the tenth, but was unable to hold onto the lead.

It marks only the second time since the introduction of the tie-break rule in the 2011 season that an extra-inning-game ends in a tie in the Dutch big league. But is was the first time that an 11-inning game ended in a tie, while using the tie-break. The only other tie-break game that ended in a tie occured on May 24, 2012 when the match-up between Amsterdam Pirates and UVV ended in a 2-2 tie. That game lasted ten innings and like tonight was played on a Thursday-evening, meaning it ended through the curfew-rule.

Since the tie-break rule was first used in 2011, tonight's game was only the seventh in the regular season (and third since 2013) that needed eleven innings, but the first that ended in a tie.

Kinheim and HCAW both played their last 11-inning game in the 2011 season.

(May 7)

HCAW-starter Sander Helmendach had a fine outing. The righthander gave up seven hits, but that included a 3-run homerun. He was supported with two runs in the fifth inning and took a lead into the seventh inning.

HCAW outhit Kinheim 12-7, including four hits by rookie Boyd Tuhumury.

Initially, HCAW registered only three hits in the first four innings off of starter Tom Stuifbergen, who didn't loose his spot in Kinheim's rotation despite a 2-game suspension. Two weeks ago, the righthander was ejected. His case was discussed a week ago on Thursday, which also was the evening when he made his next start in the opener of the 3-game series against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. He was suspended for two games, effective last Saturday. That meant that, after starting Game 1 vs. Pirates, he was unavaible in the next two games on Saturday and Sunday, in which he (probably) would never have thrown anyway. And so, after having 'served' his 2-game suspension, he returned tonight in his regular scheduled start in the opener of the next 3-game series against HCAW.

In the first four innings, Stuifbergen struckout six batters and was supported with a double play.

HCAW then opened the score with two runs in the fifth inning. Rowan van Hoek led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Raoell Kortstam and a single by Max Clarijs. With runners on first and third base, Rikkert Kempen followed with a bunt-single that enable Van Hoek to score. A sac-bunt by Jarreau Martina then moved the runners and also led to a pitching change. David Bergman took over and gave up an RBI-single to Boyd Tuhumury that made it 2-0.

Bergman encountered no problems in the next two innings and almost became the winning pitcher. Bergman was the scheduled starting pitcher for the next game on Saturday. Because of his relief-appearance tonight, the rotation was changed and Bergman will now start Sunday instead. Sunday's starter Nick Veltkamp has moved to Saturday.

Helmendach saw Kinheim get close to opening the score in the third inning. With one out, Kevin Moesquit singled, Mervin Gario walked and Dashenko Ricardo singled to load the bases. Hereafter, the second out was recorded via an infield-fly hit by Jeffrey Arends. Helmendach then ended the inning by striking out Kalian Sams.

In the fifth, with a 2-0 lead, he gave up a run. Jochem Koedijk reached on an error and scored on an one-out triple by Mervin Gario. This time, Helmendach struckout Ricardo and a grounder ended the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kinheim appeared to turn the game its way. Former HCAW-player Jasper Keijzer led off with a single and moved on a sac-bunt by Jochem Koedijk. Kevin Moesquit then walked and the runners advanced a base on a passed ball. With two outs, Dashenko Ricardo homered to give Kinheim a 4-2 lead, making Bergman the pitcher-of-record.

In the top of the eighth, Pim Walsma took over the pitching for Kinheim, but ran into problems. Boyd Tuhumury led off with a single and stole second base, then Roy Seltenrijch walked. Rossini Frolijk followed with a double that brought in Tuhumury. Next, Emersson Paula singled to tie the score. After a strikeout, a force play was created by walking Raoell Kortstam intentionally, then Walsma closed the inning with two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jasper Keijzer led off for Kinheim with a walk. After a pitching change, a strikeout and flyout followed, then Keijzer was ruled out for interference on a grounder by Gario. That ended the inning, meaning a tie-break was needed.

In the top of the tenth inning, HCAW re-took the lead off of closer Arshwin Asjes. With Boyd Tuhumury and Roy Seltenrijch as tie-break runners, the bases got loaded when Brian Biezen walked. A following walk for Emersson Paula then gave HCAW a 5-4 lead. But then, the inning ended when Kinheim turned a 5-2-3 double play, followed by a strikeout.

Kinheim came alongside in its tenth at bat off of Steven van Groningen, who had relieved Helmendach in the ninth. Tie-break runners Kevin Moesquit and Mervin Gario advanced on sac-bunt by Dashenko Ricardo, then the first scored on a sac-fly by Jeffrey Arends. With two outs, Kalian Sams popped up the ball into leftfield where leftfielder Jarreau Martina appeared to loose the ball, as it went briefly out of sight above the light-towers. Martina picked up the ball at the last moment, dove to it and made a great inning-ending diving catch.

In the eleventh inning, HCAW left runners at first and second base. Kinheim got the bases loaded after an error, but then a strikeout followed. Next, there was a force out at the plate and Van Groningen ended the inning with a strikeout.

As the 10:30 PM curfew-rule had been reached, the game ended in a 5-5 tie after eleven complete innings.
