DSS beats UVV in 11 innings
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - DSS won 2-1 in eleven innings vs. UVV on Saturday (May 9) in a game that was scoreless after nine innings. An error led to the winning run in the eleventh at bat.

Two days after the game between Corendon Kinheim and HCAW ended in a 5-5 tie after eleven innings, today's game also needed two extra innings. Only this time, the tie-break did what it was invented for, breaking the tie. Last Thursday's game also might have ended in a victory for one of the teams when a twelfth inning could have been played. But due to the curfew-rule that states that no new inning may be started after 10:30 PM, that game was halted after eleven complete innings.

The last time that there were two 11-inning games in one season and also two on consecutive game days was in 2011. In that year, there were four 11-inning games in the regular season, including two on back-to-back days. On April 30 of that year, Kinheim won 7-6 in eleven innings vs. Amsterdam Pirates. The next day, May 1, Sparta-Feyenoord won 5-4 in an 11-inning contest vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers.

(May 9)

The second game of the series between UVV and DSS remained scoreless for nine innings. UVV was led today as coach by Kevin Knollenburg. He filled in for Head Coach Ferenc Jongejan, who had to sit out an one-game suspension.

DSS reached second base only twice in the first seven innings off of Jurjen van Zijl. In the first inning, Mitchell Koot singled with two outs and in the second inning, Joffrey Heus did the same. After this second hit, Van Zijl retired six batters in a row. He then gave up another 2-out single in the fourth inning, when Tino van Erk reached on a basehit. He moved to second base when Seb Visser walked, but a strikeout ended the inning. The second time that DSS got a runner in scoring position occured in the seventh inning. Joffrey Heus then walked with one out and Tommy van der Sanden singled with two outs, but they were also left behind.

In its first seven innings, UVV got into scoring position in the second inning. With two outs, Norbert Jongerius, who had reached on a fielder's choice, then stole base and Thomas Smits walked, but a foul-out ended the at bat. In the third inning, UVV had runners on first and second base with one out, but this time, a double play ended the inning.

Rookie-starter Timo van Lingen then retired the side in the next four innings. Starting with the double play, he retired 13 batters in a row.

After the seven innings, both starting pitchers were relieved.

For DSS, Mark van Deursen took over. He gave up an one-out single to Brennan Nijhof, but then DSS turned a double play. For UVV, Claudio Bavera became the new pitcher and he saw a runner strand at third base in the eighth inning.

DSS was retired in order in the ninth, then UVV got two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but they were left behind.

In the top of 10th, DSS opened the score via the tie-break rule. The two tie-break runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Tommy van der Sanden and a following single by Mark Smit gave DSS an 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 10th, Kevin Geestman took over the pitching for DSS, but saw UVV come alongside. Initially, Geestman picked off the runner on second base, but then saw the runner on first base, Norbert Jongerus, steal second base. Moments later, he scored the tying run on a single by Mike Bazuin.

And so, the eleventh inning began.

In the top of the 11th, tie-break runners Lex Leijenaar and Mitchel Dautzenberg advanced on a sac-bunt by Sven Jongejans. With two outs, a comeback-grounder by Seb Visser appeared to become the final out, but pitcher Claudio Bavera made a fielding error, enabling Leijenaar to score. Shane Boeree then was inserted as pinch-runner for Visser. He was picked off by Bavera and at that moment, Dautzenberg took off trying to score, so UVV let Boeree go and eliminated the runner at the plate to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 11th, Jamie Verheyleweghen, the lead tie-break runner was forced out at third base on a bunt back to the pitcher by Joris van Ballegooy. Next, Geestman struckout Gilmer Lampe. A double steal followed to put the runners at second and third base, but a grounder ended the inning and the game, resulting in a 2-1 win for DSS.
