Win & Loss for Neptunus on Day 1 Loek Loevendie Tournament
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) -
Reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus today (Saturday, April 11) played two games on the second edition of the Loek Loevendie Tournament, organized by L&D Amsterdam Pirates in the Dutch capital.
On a cold a rainy day, Neptunus opened the event with a come-from-behind 2-1 win vs. Corendon Kinheim, thanks to a 2-run homerun by Dwayne Kemp.
In the second game, Neptunus faced L&D Amsterdam Pirates.
Trailing 2-0, Amsterdam rallied for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Neptunus answered with a 4-run rally to turn the score 6-5 in its favor.
The game was then stopped definitively due the steady rain.
According to the tournament-rules, only complete innings count for the final score, as is the normal rule in most tournaments.
And since Neptunus was the visiting team and trailing, this means that their runs scored in the fifth inning were dropped from the final score, as they were scored in a non-completed inning.
With that, the score was reversed to the previous complete inning, meaning Amsterdam won 5-2.
In the second game today, Nick Urbanus made his comeback in an Amsterdam-uniform, playing at second base.
On Sunday, the final two games are scheduled.
At 11 AM, Kinheim meets Mampaey The Hawks, which then plays at 2 PM vs. Amsterdam Pirates.
In the somewhat weird construction of the tournament, Pirates doens't meet Kinheim, while Neptunus doesn't play againsst The Hawks.
All games last nine innings (or 8½ when the home team leads) and include the mercy-rule.

Curaçao Neptunus vs. Corendon Kinheim
The opener of the tournament was a close game between Curaçao Neptunus and Corendon Kinheim, which ended in a 2-1 win for the Rotterdam-squad.
Initially, it appeared that Kinheim would walk away from Neptunus in the first at bat.
The Haarlem-team collected four basehits, but scored only once.
Kinheim left the bases loaded and that might have turned the game Neptunus' way in the end.
Kinheim was held scoreless in the remainder of the game and never got such a big scoring opportunity anymore.
In the opening at bat, Neptunus-starter Diegomar Markwell got two quick outs.
In between, he gave up a single to Mervin Gario, just out of reach of short stop Dwayne Kemp.
With two outs, the veteran lefthander gave up three more basehits.
With their singles, Dudley Leonora and Jeffrey Arends loaded the bases, then the next single by Dashenko Ricardo brought in Gario, gave Kinheim an 1-0 lead and kept the bases loaded.
But then a flyout ended the at bat, stranding the three runners.
In the second inning, Calvin Martinus and Jasper Keijzer led off with two more basehits.
But things started to turn Neptunus' way.
First, Markwell picked off Martinus on second base, then he followed with a strikeout.
A single by Gario gave Kinheim runners on first and second base, but Markwell concluded with another strikeout.
In its first two at bat, Neptunus left two runners behind in scoring position.
Christian Diaz led off with a walk and Benjamin Dille followed with a single, but then Kinheim turned a nice double play.
This brought Diaz to third base, but he was left there.
In the second inning, Dwayne Kemp led off with a double, but stranded, as Kinheim-starter Tom Stuifbergen followed with three strikeouts.
Just before the start of the third inning, the game was interrupted for some steady rain, but after a 12-minute delay, the game continued.
In the third, fourth and fifth inning, the pitchers and defenses of both teams kept each other in balance.
For Kinheim, Mervin Gario was hit by a pitch by new pitcher Kenny Van Den Branden to start the fifth inning, but he was left on third base.
Neptunus left a runner on first and second base in the third inning, then was retired in order in the fourth and the fifth, the latter by new pitcher Arshwin Asjes.
In the top of the sixth, Van Den Branden struckout the Kinheim-side, then Neptunus struck in the home half of the at bat.
After a great play by third baseman Mervin Gario accounted for the first out, Raily Legito walked and moved on a passed ball.
A strikeout followed, then Legito stole third base on a close call.
Moments later, Dwayne Kemp connected well for a 2-run homerun to give Neptunus a 2-1 lead.
Singles by Rien Vernooij and Urving Kemp followed, but they were left behind.
In the top of the seventh inning, it was Neptunus' third baseman Raily Legito who made a nice defensive play.
Hereafter, Kevin Kelly took over the pitching, gave up the third single in this game to Mervin Gario, but then a grounder ended the at bat.
In the eighth inning, Kelly completed a weird double play.
With one out, Jeffrey Arends doubled.
He then advanced when Dashenko Ricardo flied out to rightfielder Christian Diaz.
Arends continued towards home, while the throw from Diaz via second baseman Benjamin Dille to catcher Mourik Huijser was its way.
While Arends had started his sliding, Huijser lost control of the ball, a collission followed and just before reaching the plate, Kelly (who covered the play and was near home plate) picked up the ball and tagged out Arends to complete the double play and end the inning, which was a great call by Home Plate Umpire Edwin Louisa.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kinheim's short stop Dudley Leonora had made a nice play on a hard grounder and also ended the inning with another play.
Hereafter, Neptunus was retired in order in the eighth by Scott Ronnenbergh.
The lefthander had taken over for Pim Walsma, who had pitched the seventh inning for Kinheim.
Loek van Mil closed the game for Neptunus, retired the side (including two strikeouts) and earned a save.
Van Den Branden became the first pitcher who was credited with four wins during this exhibition season.

In the second game today, Nick Urbanus played in his first game for L&D Amsterdam Pirates since 2010 after returning back from the States, where he was released by the Texas Rangers at the end of March.
Urbanus, who was the second baseman, was 1-for-3 with a strikeout.
Also playing in his first game for Amsterdam this exhibition season was catcher Bas Nooij, who returned earlier in the week from Australia, where he played during the winter months.
In the first three innings, Neptunus controlled the game, taking a 2-0 lead.
In the first at bat, Raily Legito singled with two outs.
The veteran player then stole second base and advanced when a throwing error followed.
But he then stranded when starter Rob Cordemans closed with a strikeout.
Neptunus then opened the score with two runs in the second inning.
With one out, Rien Vernooij walked, then scored when Shurman Marlin followed with a double.
With two outs, Shaldimar Daantji singled, followed by an outfield-error, which enabled Marlin to score the second run.
Moments later, Daantji stole second base and Adrian Anthony walked, but they were left behind.
In the third inning, Dwayne Kemp singled with two outs off of new pitcher Tom de Blok.
In the fourth, Christian Diaz singled with one out.
Next batter Shaldimar Daantji then popped up the ball towards the first base-line, but there, it was dropped by Urbanus.
However, he had enough time to pick up the ball and force out Diaz at second base.
Daantji then was left behind moments later.
Amsterdam got into scoring position in the second inning off of starter Orlando Yntema.
Bas Nooij led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Remco Draijer, who then stranded himself after stealing second base.

Trailing 2-0, Amsterdam rallied for five runs in the fourth inning.
With one out, Kenny Berkenbosch struckout, but reached on a wild pitch.
The bases then got loaded when Bas Nooij and Remco Draijer both singled.
Pirates then tied the scored when Jesse Aussems also singled and Rashid Gerard walked.
That led to a pitching change, as Berry van Driel was brought in to relief Yntema.
Van Driel saw Koen Nooij groundout, but that enabled Draijer to score the go-ahead run.
Next, pinch-hitter Linoy Croes was hit by a pitch and then Nick Urbanus followed with a 2-run single that made it 5-2.
Croes was eliminated trying to advance to third base to end the inning, but that happened after the second run already had scored.
In the top of the fifth inning, Neptunus answered with a 4-run rally.
During the at bat, there was a dicussion between the umpire-crew and both Head Coaches regarding the rain, which now was fallen steadily, but it was decided to continue playing.
First, Benjamin Dille led off with a single, but then Raily Legito grounded into a double play.
Hereafter, pitcher Tom de Blok gave up five basehits, which led to Neptunus taking a 6-5 lead.
First, Gianison Boekhoudt and Dwayne Kemp singled, then Rien Vernooij followed with an RBI-single.
Shurman Marlin then delivered a 2-run double that tied the score and scored himself when Christian Diaz hit the fifth consecutive basehit.
De Blok ended with a strikout, but Neptunus had taken a 6-5 lead.
After completion of the at bat, it was decided to stop the game due to the rain.
And when the tournament-rules would be implemented, it means that this last at bat will be scrubbed and the score reversed to four complete innings, resulting in a 5-2 win for Pirates.
