Neptunus wins big at HCAW in 5-inning sun-delayed game
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - The game between HCAW and Curaçao Neptunus on Thursday-evening (June 11) was interrupted by a sun-delay that lasted one hour and nine minutes. When the game was interrupted in the top of the third inning, Neptunus led 9-0.

When the game resumed, their were only 50 minutes remaining before the game had to be stopped due to the curfew-rule. And so, it became somewhat questionable whether or not the game would be valid (5 innings), as no new inning can be started at 10:30 PM.

Both the third and fourth inning were productive for Neptunus, but in the end, the fifth inning started in time. That meant that the game was valid, but it lasted only five innings. In case, no valid game was played, it had to be replayed in its entirety on Friday-evening.

Neptunus won 15-0 on 15 basehits, including four by Christian Diaz (two doubles, one triple), three doubles by Stijn van der Meer and homeruns by Gianison Boekhoudt and Shaldimar Daantji. HCAW registered only two basehits.

The last time that a regular season-game lasted only five innings was on Thursday, April 17 of last year, which was Opening Night. On that evening, Neptunus won 9-0 vs. ADO Lakers in a game that was halted after five complete innings due to rain.

For-the-record, nine days ago, Corendon Kinheim won 22-5 vs. Vaessen Pioniers. The 22 runs were the most scored in a regular season-game since Kinheim scored 26 on August 18, 2013 in a 26-0 win vs. ADO Lakers. In both 20-plus run games umpire Martijn Bosschaart was involved. Tonight, Bosschaart accomplished another feat, as he also was an umpire in both 5-inning games, the one on Opening Day last year and the one tonight. Last season, he was at third base, tonight, he was at first base.

Another fact, the shortest evening game last season (except for mercy-rule scores) lasted eight innings.

(June 11)

Neptunus opened the score quickly with two runs in the first at bat off of starter Sander Helmendach. With one out, Dwayne Kemp and Raily Legito singled, then both scored when Christian Diaz tripled with two outs.

Four runs were then added in the second inning. With one out, Shaldimar Daantji reached on an error and Stijn van der Meer followed with a double. Hereafter, Dwayne Kemp also doubled to bring in both runners. with two outs, Gianison Boekhoudt homered to lift the lead to 6-0.

The third inning was another productive at bat for Neptunus. The Rotterdam-squad then rallied for six runs (with two outs) in an inning that was interrupted for more than an hour. Shurman Marlin led off with a walk, then two outs followed. He then scored when Stijn van der Meer hit his second double of the game. That led to a pitching change, as Tim Niekerk took over for Helmendach. He walked Dwayne Kemp, then gave up a 2-run double to Raily Legito that lifted the lead to 9-0. With Legito on second base, the game was then interrupted, as next batter Gianison Boekhoudt was bothered by the bright sun, which was setting. And that led to a sun-delay of one hour and nine minutes.

Tonight's delay was six minutes shorter than the previous one on May 28 when HCAW played at home against DSS. Back then, the delay came after three complete innings. Tonight, because of the many scoring by Neptunus, it came during the top of the third inning. By the way, tonight's Home Plate Umpire Stenar van Groningen Schinkel was at first base during the May 28 game.

Last season, five home games of HCAW were delayed by the setting sun, including another one hour, 15 minute delay on June 8. That came during a game that was played on a SUNday-evening.

When the game resumed tonight, there were only 50 minutes left before the curfew-time of 10:30 PM was to be reached. And so, when Neptunus should go on scoring the way it was before the delay, it was questionable whether or not the game would be valid (5 innings) before the curfew-time was reached. In case the game was not valid, it had to be replayed in its entirety on Friday-evening.

But it didn't come that far. When the game resumed, HCAW changed pitchers again, as Bob Klaarenbeek took over for Niekerk. He saw Boekhoudt reach on an error, which led to a run, then gave up a single to Diaz. A double by Adrian Anthony then brought in both runners and lifted the lead to 12-0.

In the fourth, Neptunus scored three runs. Urving Kemp reached on an error, then Shaldimar Daantji homered. Next, Stijn van der Meer hit his third double and went on to score on a grounder by Raily Legito to make it 15-0.

Neptunus was then retired in order in the top of the fifth.

Orlando Yntema started for Neptunus. He began with two strikeouts, then gave up a single to Emersson Paula, who was then forced out. Yntema then struckout two more batters in the second inning, but didn't return to the mound after the sun-delay. With that, he becomes the probable starter for next Tuesday-evening's make-up game against L&D Amsterdam Pirates.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jorian van Acker took over the pitching. He gave up a 2-out single to Aldrich Guzman, which was his first of the season and the last for HCAW tonight.
