Amsterdam Pirates wins Loevendie Tournament & exhibition season
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Day 2 of the second edition of the Loek Loevendie Tournament on Sunday (April 12) began with an 11-7 victory of Corendon Kinheim against Mampaey The Hawks.

In the afternoon, host L&D Amsterdam Pirates met The Hawks in what was the final game of the exhibition season. And it proved to the the decisive game for the 'exhibition championship'. It was an unlikely combination. Last season, Amsterdam reached the Holland Series and was one win away from the Dutch championship, while The Hawks finished in last place and relegated. But last month, The Hawks returned to the big league taking the vacant spot after the withdrawal of ADO Lakers. The Hawks took over most players of ADO Lakers and had a fine exhibition period. That resulted in the set-up for this final game, as the winner would become the 'winner' of the exhibition season. Amsterdam won 8-1 and with that not only won the Loek Loevendie Tournament, but also the exhibition season.

For all teams, these games were the final preparations for the upcoming season, which opens next Thursday-evening, April 16.
Amsterdam Pirates opens at home in Amsterdam vs. UVV.
The Hawks opens in Hoofddorp at Vaessen Pioniers, while Kinheim opens at DSS.
All games begin at 7:30 PM.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates trailed 1-0 after five innings, but then scored five runs in the sixth en route to an 8-1 victory. With the win, Amsterdam won its second game of the tournament to win the event. Also with the win, Amsterdam moved into first place of the exhibition ranking, passing The Hawks.

Like in the first game today, The Hawks initially held the lead. The team opened the score in the third inning when Chris Williams led off with a triple and scored on a single by Wijnand Ruben.

But that was to be the lone run for the team. In the remainder of the game, The Hawks got a runner into scoring position only one more time. Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek retired the side in the fourth, then Kyle Ward threw three fine innings. The lefthander allowed only one batter to reach base and struckout four. In the eighth, Daan Hendrix was supported with a double play. Dennis Burgersdijk threw the ninth. He gave up an one-out single to Amir Dou, whose pinch-runner Odion Gouverneur later stranded on third base.

In its first three at bats, Pirates was silenced by The Hawks-starter Jeldwin Orman, who struckout five batters. After giving up a 2-out single to Michael Duursma in the first inning, the righthander retired seven batters in a row.

Maikel Berghmans took over in the fourth inning and saw Pirates strand a runner on second base in the fourth and on third base in the fifth at bat.

Amsterdam then scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning to turn the game its way. Lead-off hitter Linoy Croes reached on an error, stole second base and moved on a single by Nick Urbanus, who advanced on the throw to third base. With one out, the latter was eliminated in a rundown on a grounder by Kenny Berkenbosch, but that enabled Croes to score the tying run. Next, Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch, then Remco Draijer followed with a 2-run triple that put Amsterdam ahead, 3-1. Jesse Aussems added an runscoring single. After Rashid Gerard had also singled, Patrick Bok connected for an RBI-double to make it 5-1.

Pirates added thee runs in the eighth at bat off of José Moreno. With one out, Rashid Gerard was hit by a pitch, then Patrick Bok doubled again. A single by Koen Nooij, double by Nick Urbanus and sacrifice fly by Michael Duursma then made it 8-1.
