Neptunus wins big in one-hitter vs. DSS
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus rallied for four runs in the third and seventh inning to win comfortable with a 10-1 score on Sunday (July 12) vs. DSS.

Neptunus-pitchers Kenny Van Den Branden and Loek van Mil gave up only one basehit to the Haarlem-squad. The lone basehit was registered in the sixth inning in which DSS also scored its lone run.

(July 12)

Neptunus opened the score with one run in the second inning off of starting pitcher Mike Groen. With one out, Rien Vernooij and Christian Diaz walked, then moved on a grounder by Adrian Anthony. A single by Shaldimar Daantji then gave Neptunus an 1-0 lead.

Neptunus rallied for four runs with two outs in the second at bat. Dwayne Kemp led off with a single and stole second base. Kemp then also stole third base with one out and now leads the league with 21 stolen bases. Next batter Benjamin Dille then struckout, but reached on a wild pitch that enabled Kemp to score. Gianison Boekhoudt then singled and Rien Vernooij followed with a 2-run triple. Moments later, Vernooij scored on a single by Christian Diaz, who is the league's leading hitter with a .417 average.

In the fifth inning, Gianison Boekhoudt homered for Neptunus with two outs to make it a 6-0 score. This was Boekhoudt's sixth homerun of the season and he shares the lead with Bryan Engelhardt, who also homered today for Corendon Kinheim. Boekhoudt also leads the league with 37 runs batted in.

Neptunus-starter Kenny Van Den Branden retired the first eleven batters in a row. He then walked Mitchell Koot with two outs in the fourth, but a flyout ended the inning. The at bat began with an injury. Lead-off hitter Ryan Miner grounded out, but apparently hurt his hamstring while arriving at first base and left the game. The Belgian righthander retired the side again in the fifth.

Both his No-Hitter and ShutOut ended in the sixth at bat. With one out, rookie Daan Halderman walked, then Levine Gabriëls singled, which would the lone basehit for DSS in this game. The bases got loaded when Lex Leijenaar walked, then a sacrifice fly by Mitchell Koot resulted in the lone run for DSS.

Neptunus took more distance by scoring four runs in the seventh inning off of new pitcher Mark van Deursen. Mourik Huijser led off with a single and scored on a triple by Dwayne Kemp, who then scored himself on a following single by Stijn van der Meer. An error on a force play-grounder by Benjamin Dille led to runners on first and second base and they advanced on a flyout. A pinch-hit grounder by Shurman Marlin gave Neptunus another run. After Christian Diaz walked, Max Ploegstra took over the pitching for Van Deursen and loaded the bases by walking Adrian Anthony. A following walk for Shaldimar Daantji then lifted the lead to 10-1, but Neptunus left three runners behind when a strikeout ended the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Van Den Branden retired the first two batters, then was relieved by closer Loek van Mil. This was the first appearance of the long righthander since July 2, as he had to sit out a 4-game suspension. Starting pitcher Diegomar Markwell also was suspended for four games, but he returned to the mound on Saturday and then went the distance. Van Mil retired the side in the ninth to end the game.
