Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates was outhit 10-9 on Sunday (July 12) vs. Vaessen Pioniers, but won 7-3 to complete a 3-game sweep.

In the first 3-game series between the two teams in the first half of the season, Pioniers had won twice. A week ago, Pioniers handed Curaçao Neptunus two losses.

With the win, Amsterdam Pirates closes in on finishing the regular season in first place. When the season resumes on July 30, Amsterdam meets DSS in a 3-game series. The team that finishes in first place in the Overall Standings, qualifies for participation in next years European Champions Cup Qualifying Tournament.

Due to the sweep, Pioniers dropped from third to fourth place. Corendon Kinheim, which swept UVV, moved into third place. Despite the three losses, Pioniers nears qualification for the Play-Offs. When the season resumes, Pioniers can secure its spot in the 3-game series against HCAW.

(July 12)

While the Amsterdam-defense committed four errors, its offense connected at the right moment to support starting pitcher Kyle Ward, who went eight-plus innings. The lefthander gave up two runs in the sixth inning, but at that moment, Amsterdam led 3-0 and hold onto the lead throughout the game.

Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer gave up two runs in the third at bat. Patrick Bok led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Linoy Croes. He then moved to third base on a double by Roelie Henrique, then scored on a single by Michael Duursma, who leads the league in walks (42) and hit batter (10). Moments later, Henrique scored the second run on a grounder by Nick Urbanus. A single by Kenny Berkenbosch followed, but Amsterdam left two runners behind.

The home team added its next run in the fourth inning. Lead-off hitter Bas Nooij reached second base on an error, then advanced when another error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Jesse Aussems. Nooij scored when Aussems was forced out on a grounder by Patrick Bok, but Pirates would strand two more runners.

Kyle Ward held Pioniers scoreless in the first five innings. Pioniers got close to a run in the fourth inning. Danny Rombley led off with a single, but was caught stealing after a pick-off. Hereafter, Vince Rooi singled and moved to third base when Mark-Jan Moorman reached on an error. But hereafter, the inning ended when Quintin De Cuba grounded into a double play.

After retiring the side in the fifth, Ward gave up two runs in the sixth at bat. Daniel Fernandes led off with a double, moved on a grounder by Dirk van 't Klooster and scored when Danny Rombley also doubled. An error then enabled Rombley to score the next run and narrow the deficit to 3-2, but Ward closed the inning by striking out the next two batters.

Amsterdam immediately answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Bas Nooij led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Jesse Aussems and a passed ball. He then scored on a fielder's choice-grounder by Patrick Bok, who hit the ball back to Lars Huijer, however, Nooij beat the throw to the plate. Hereafter, Bok moved on a wild pitch, then scored on a 2-out single by Roelie Henrique. That brought in new pitcher Dennis Buring and the inning then ended when Henrique was caught stealing.

Amsterdam took more distance by scoring two more runs in the eighth at bat off of Sedley Karel. Remco Draijer led off with a walk and Bas Nooij followed with a ground-rule double. They scored when Jesse Aussems also doubled and that gave Pirates a 7-2 lead.

After Pioniers had scored twice in the sixth, Pirates turned a double play in the seventh, then Ward retired the side in the eighth. In the top of the ninth inning, Pioniers added one more run. With one out, Vince Rooi and Mark-Jan Moorman singled. Rooi advanced to third when an outfield-error followed, then scored on a single by Quintin De Cuba, which also was followed by an outfield-error. With runners on second and third base, Tom de Blok took over for Ward and retired the next two batters to end the game and earn a save.
