Pirates nips Pioniers in 10 innings
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates initially trailed quickly 2-0 in the first inning on Thursday-afternoon (May 14) vs. Vaessen Pioniers, but then held the Hoofddorp-team scoreless in the remainder of the game.

Amsterdam, which was outhit 10-5, then came alongside in the sixth and went on to win 3-2 on a dropped fly ball in the outfield with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning.

(May 14)

Pioniers opened the score with two runs in the first inning off of Rob Cordemans. With two outs, Dirk van 't Klooster and Vince Rooi singled, then both scored when Mark-Jan Moorman followed with a double.

In the next five innings, Pioniers reached third base only once off of Cordemans. He gave up two singles in the second inning, but the righthander then retired six batters in a row. In the fourth, Cordemans gave up an one-out single to Kevin Dirksen, but then was supported with a double play. After being retired in order in the fifth, Pioniers reached base again in the sixth. With one out, Vince Rooi singled, then moved to third base on a 2-out single by Quintin De Cuba, but was left behind.

Trailing 2-0, Amsterdam got the bases loaded in its first at bat off of Ricardo Hernandez Sanchez. Michael Duursma led off with a walk, but Hernandez followed with a strikeout. Duursma was then forced out on second base on a grounder by Kenny Berkenbosch. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Remco Draijer and Bas Nooij also walked, but Hernandez avoided giving up runs by ending the at bat with a strikeout.

In the next four at bats, the lefthander allowed only two batters to reach base. After retiring the side in the second inning, he gave up lead-off singles to Michael Duursma and Nick Urbanus (bunt) in the third. Hereafter, Hernandez retired eight batters in a row (Duursma was caught stealing).

In the sixth inning, Amsterdam tied the score. Nick Urbanus and Kenny Berkenbosch led off with singles, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Bas Nooij. The bases got loaded when Remco Draijer walked. A run was then scored when Rashid Gerard reached on an error, which kept the bases loaded. Jesse Aussems followed with a single that tied the score. But Pirates left the bases loaded when Hernandez struckout next batters Koen Nooij and Roelie Henrique.

Both starting pitchers left after seven innings. Both teams stranded a runner on second base in the eighth off of relievers Tom de Blok and Reggie Bomberg.

In the top of the ninth inning, Pioniers got close to re-taking the lead. Quintin De Cuba reached on an error, which led to a pitching change. De Cuba advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Dirksen and moved to third on a single by Kevin Weijgertse, but then Max Draijer grounded into an inning-ending double play.

For Amsterdam, Michael Duursma was hit by a pitch with two outs in the ninth, but stranded, meaning the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth inning, Amsterdam-reliever Daan Hendrix picked off Kevin Weijgertse, the tie-break runner on second base. He then struckout Daniel Fernandes and a grounder by Danny Rombley ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, closer Bayron Cornelisse took over the pitching for Pioniers. With Michael Duursma on second base and Nick Urbanus on first base as tie-break runners, the latter was forced out on a grounder by Kenny Berkenbosch. The bases then got loaded when Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch, but a force out at home followed on a grounder by Remco Draijer. With the bases still loaded and two outs, the inning appeared to come to an end when Rashid Gerard hit the ball into rightfield. But there, veteran rightfielder Dirk van 't Klooster, who has made numerous catches in his big league-career of 20-plus years, dropped the ball, enabling Berkenbosch to score the winning run and end the game.
