Pioniers fails to finish game via mercy-rule; The Hawks AC Grampon resigns
Nederlands
DORDRECHT (Neth.) - Vaessen Pioniers led 12-0 vs. Mampaey The Hawks in the seventh inning on Sunday (June 14) and needed only three outs to end the game via the mercy-rule.

But then The Hawks rallied for seven runs to force Pioniers to play a complete game. In the inning, six hits were registerd, including a 3-run double by Julian Goins.

Pioniers collected 17 basehits, including homeruns by Mark-Jan Moorman and Quintin de Cuba, who hit a grand slam in a 7-run rally in the fourth.

The Hawks was led again today by Assistant Coach Gregory Grampon, who was the Acting Head Coach, filling in for Eugene Henson, who sat out a 3-game suspension. But this also was the last game for Grampon, as he stepped down as coach after today's game for personal reasons. That means that Henson now has no Assistant Coach.

(June 14)

Pioniers was off to a productive start and already lead 12-0 after four innings, but that proved to be not enough to finish the game via the 10-run difference mercy-rule.

The first run was scored in the first at bat off of starter Kevin van Veen. The inning initially began in favor of The Hawks, as Daniel Fernandes led off with a double into leftfield, but then was thrown out at third base trying to stretch it into a triple. Next, Dirk van 't Klooster singled and scored on a following double by Danny Rombley.

After leaving two runners in the second, four runs were added in the third at bat. With one out, Danny Rombley singled and scored on a double by Quintin De Cuba. A following homerun by Mark-Jan Moorman then accounted for the next two runs. Hereafter, Kevin Dirksen singled, moved on a single by Kevin Weijgertse and scored on a force play-grounder by Taylor Clemensia.

In the fourth inning, Pioniers rallied for seven runs to lift the lead to 12-0. Daniel Fernandes led off with a single and that led to a pitching change, as Tim Roodenburg took over. He walked Dirk van 't Klooster and hit Danny Rombley with a pitch to load the bases, then gave up a grand slam homerun to Quintin De Cuba. After next batter Mark-Jan Moorman singled, Roodenburg was replaced by Laurens Oele, who recently was added to the roster of The Hawks. He was greeted with a ground-rule double by Kevin Dirksen, then loaded the bases when he hit Kevin Weijgertse with a pitch. Oele then walked Taylor Clemensia, Milan Lammerts and Daniel Fernandes, resulting in three more runs. With the bases still loaded and no outs, Oele finally eliminated three powerful hitters. He struckout Dirk van 't Klooster, saw Danny Rombley pop up for an infield-fly and got Quintin De Cuba to groundout.

And so, the game appeared out of reach for The Hawks, which now trailed 12-0.

In the fifth inning, Pioniers left three runners behind off of Oele and also was held scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning by new pitcher José Moreno.Elton Koeiman. The team got its first two batters to reach base in the fourth, but they were left behind. In the fifth, they left two runners in scoring position. But in the sixth, The Hawks was retired in order by new pitcher Reggie Bomberg.

And so, Pioniers was still leading 12-0 when the bottom of the seventh inning began, needing only three outs to end the game via the mercy-rule. Pioniers changed its battery, as Swen Huijer took over the pitching and Glenn Bakker became the new catcher. The Hawks then suddenly came back into the game, as it rallied for seven runs. Steven Wharwood led off with a single, Odion Gouverneur walked and a single by Enoch Deaton loaded the bases. An error at the plate then followed on a force play-grounder by Gino Hersilia, leading to the first run and keeping the bases loaded. The next run was added when Stephen Henson was hit by a pitch. An infield-fly by Lejeune Francisca then accounted for the first out, but Berend Ruben followed with a runscoring single. Hereafter, the bases were cleared when Julian Goins connected for a 3-run double that narrowed the deficit to 12-6. Dennis Buring was brought in as new pitcher, but he gave up a single to Kilian Jansen, followed by an RBI-double by Steven Wharwood, who with that registered two basehits in this inning. With runners on second and third base, Buring struckout Gouverneur, then the inning ended when Deaton lined out.

The situation now has changed, as the score not only was 12-7, it also meant that the game had to continue and The Hawks suddenly had a chance to do something more in the remaining two at bats. But that didn't happen. The Hawks was held scoreless in the remainder of the game, while Pioniers added a run in the eighth via a sac-fly by Danny Rombley.
