Dutch Juniors open European Championship with win
Nederlands
OSTRAVA (Czech Republic) - The Netherlands Junior Baseball Team (AAA) opened the European Junior Championship in the Czech Republic on Tuesday (July 14) with a big 12-2 victory against Sweden.

Two years ago, in Czech capitol Prague, the Dutch Team finished in third place. Italy then won the title, beating the Czech Republic 9-3 in the final.

The Dutch squad plays in Pool B and also meets Croatia, Czech Republic and Russia in the preliminary round.

Playing in Pool A are France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.

The event opened on Monday with four games, but the Dutch Team then had the day off.

While a Dutch Team participates in the event, remarkable enough there is no Dutch umpire assigned to 12-man umpire crew for the tournament.

Monday's scores:
Pool A: Italy vs. France 7-1, Great Britain vs. Germany 8-14
Pool B: Croatia vs. Sweden 4-1, Czech Republic vs. Russia 10-0

Today's scores:
Pool A: France vs. Great Britain 9-2, Spain vs. Germany 6-10 (10 inn.)
Pool B: Netherlands vs. Sweden 12-2, Russia vs. Croatia 8-4

(July 14)

In its first game, the Dutch Junior Team collected 17 basehits, including four homeruns. The Dutch offense was led by Julian Rip and Ruben Prins, who both registered four basehits. Rip went 4-for-5, scored four runs and also batted in four. Prins was 4-for-4, scored once and batted in one run.

Rip hit three extra basehits, as he doubled once and homered twice. Menno Lenting and Chiel Berkhout (who scored three runs) also homered for the Orange squad.

Two Dutch pitchers gave up seven basehits in the game, that ended in the eighth inning due to the 10-run difference mercy-rule. Winning pitcher Gijs Timmer started and gave up four hits in five innings. Timo van Lingen then threw the next three innings, gave up three hits and earned a save.

Menno Lenting homered with one out in the first inning to give the Dutch an early lead, but Sweden came alongside in the second at bat.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Orange re-took the lead when Chiel Berkhout and Julian Rip opened the inning with back-to-back homeruns.

Sweden narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but that was to be the last run for the Scandinavian team. From the bottom of the fourth, the Dutch Team took more distance and scored nine runs in the next five at bats.

The Dutch scored twice in the fourth thanks to a 2-run single by Tijmen Takke. Two more runs were added in the fifth when Julian Rip hit his second homerun, this time with a runner on base.

In the seventh, three runs were scored on only one hit, as the Swedish defense contributed with two errors. In the inning, Ruben Prins delivered a runscoring single, while the other runs were scored on an error and on one of the two balks Swedish reliever Oscar Kjellberg made.

The 10-run difference was reached with one out in the eighth inning. With one out, Koen Halderman and Max Draijer singled. A single by Chiel Berkhout and double by Julian Rip then brought in both runners to lift the lead to 12-2 and end the game.
