Dutch Juniors win second game on European Championship
Nederlands
OSTRAVA (Czech Republic) - The Netherlands Junior Baseball Team (AAA) briefly trailed on Wednesday (July 15) on Day 3 of the European Junior Championship, but scored ten runs from the fifth inning on to win 11-5 against host Czech Republic.

The Dutch Team produced only seven basehits off of three pitchers, who combined on 12 strikeouts, but also walked ten batters.

Julian Rip, who hit four basehits on Tuesday vs. Sweden, tonight hit three of the seven Dutch hits. He also batted in three runs.

Two years ago, in Czech capitol Prague, the Czechs won the Silver medal, while the Dutch Team finished in third place. Italy then won the title.

In an exciting game in Pool B, Sweden nipped Russia 11-10 on Wednesday-evening in a game that lasted three hours and 30 minutes!
Russia led 4-0 in the fifth inning, then trailed 5-4 after six. The Russians re-took the lead by scoring twice in the seventh, but then two tenseful innings followed. Leading 6-5, Russia added a run in the top of the eighth, but then Sweden answered with three runs in its eighth at bat to take 8-7 lead!
In the top of the ninth inning, it was Russia that scored three runs, making it 10-8 in their favor. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Sweden again rallied for three runs to win 11-10. To win the game, the Swedes didn't have to do much themselve, as they scored their three runs without a basehit!
With one out, the next three batters walked. After a pitching change, a wild pitch led to a run, then a walk loaded the bases again. The next batter was then hit by a pitch, which tied the score. Hereafter, the next batter was also hit by a pitch, resulting in the Swedish victory.

Wednesday's scores:
Pool A: Germany vs. France 3-8, Italy vs. Spain 9-2
Pool B: Sweden vs. Russia 11-10, Czech Republic vs. Netherlands 5-11

(July 15)

The Dutch Juniors opened the score in the first inning. Olivier Severino van der Wijst and Menno Lenting led off with walks, then both advanced on a wild pitch with one out. The bases got loaded when Max Draijer also walked. Despite having the bases loaded and one out, only one run was scored. After a strikeout, Julian Rip received the fourth walk thrown by Czech starter Kryštof Trávnik, resulting in the lone run. A force play at home ended the at bat. Trávnik struckout eight batters in 4 2/3 inning, but also walked seven, while giving up only three basehits.

Taylor Clemensia started as pitcher for the Dutch squad. Clemensia is one of nine players on the Dutch roster, who have gotten frequent playing time this season in the Dutch big league. Clemensia plays for Vaessen Pioniers, as is Max Draijer, who is the regular short stop for the big league-team. Other players who have become regulars in the highest Dutch league this season are infielder Tommy van de Sanden (DSS) and pitcher Giovanni Tensen (HCAW). The remaining five players all have gained experience in the big league this season with their respective teams, being outfielder Koen Halderman, pitcher Timo van Lingen (both DSS), pitcher Gijs Timmer (Curaçao Neptunus), outfielder Julian Rip (UVV) and outfielder Boyd Tuhumury (HCAW).

Clemensia retired the side in the first inning, but then the Czechs not only came alongside in the next at bat, it also threatened to score more runs. With two outs and a runner on second base, Clemensia gave up a runscoring single to Marek Chlup. The bases then got loaded via a hit batter and a walk, but a grounder ended the inning, leaving three runners behind.

In the third inning, the Czechs did take the lead, thanks to an one-out triple by Martin Červinka, but he was left himself at third base.

After scoring in the first inning, the Dutch Team left a runner in scoring position in the third and fourth at bat, but then struck with four runs with two outs in the fifth. With one out, Menno Lenting and Koen Halderman singled, then the bases got loaded when Max Draijer walked. With two outs, Julian Rip singled in the tying run. A wild pitch then gave the Dutch a 3-2 lead and an error on a grounder by Ruben Prins led to two more runs. Hereafter, the Orange squad never ran into problems again.

The Dutch Team then also scored four runs in the next at bat to take a comfortable 9-2 lead. The bases got loaded quickly when Olivier Severino van der Wijst led off with a walk, Menno Lenting singled and Koen Halderman was hit by a pitch. An error on a grounder by Max Draijer then led to two runs. With one out, the bases were loaded again when Julian Rip singled, which led to a pitching change. Pavel Šrámek became the third Czech pitcher and he began with a strikeout. But hereafter, he walked Tijmen Takke and Tommy van de Sanden, resulting in two more runs. The bases were left behind loaded when a strikeout ended the inning.

Nick Keur took over the Dutch pitching in the bottom of the sixth inning. The lefthander gave up a run via a wild pitch, but with a runner on third base, he ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the eighth, two Dutch runs were added. Chiel Berkhout led off with a double and was awarded third base on a balk. He then scored on a triple by Julian Rip, who himself scored when an error followed.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Czechs got two runs back on a grounder and an error. But that was all for the squad, led by Head Coach David Winkler. Leoš Kubát, who pitched in the Dutch big league for Neptunus, is his pitching coach.

Giovanni Tensen pitched the ninth inning for the Dutch and retired the side to end the game.
