(Story by Marco Stoovelaar; Photo by Henk Seppen) Amsterdam vs. UVV suspended due to light-failure; continues on Saturday Nederlands AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - The Opening Game between L&D Amsterdam Pirates and UVV on Thursday-evening (April 16) was halted after five complete innings due to a failure in the light installation. After a lenghtly delay, the game wasn't resumed anymore and now has the status of being 'suspended'. It will be completed on Saturday-afternoon before the regular scheduled game between the two teams in Amsterdam. During the bottom of the fifth inning, it became clear that the light towers were only working for some 50 percent. The game was then halted after completion of the fifth at bat, at 9:05 PM, while the power supplier was contacted, as Amsterdam Pirates was not to blame for the failure. But even when the power would have been restored, it would have taken some time for the light towers to get back into its full strength. Especially with the 10:30 curfew-time approaching. It was reported that an electricien of the power supply company arrived at the site around 11 PM, thirty minutes after the curfew-rule had been passed and almost two hours after the failure was reported. When the game was halted, UVV led only 1-0. The game will resume coming Saturday in the top of the sixth inning. By the way, this is the third time in the last four years that Amsterdam Pirates and UVV open the season against each other. (April 16)

Rob Cordemans made his fifth consecutive Opening Day-start for L&D Amsterdam Pirates. UVV-starter Jurjen van Zijl was assigned to his second Opening Day-start in three years. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) With one out in the first inning, Joris van Ballegooy became the first player who hit a basehit in the 2015 baseball-season. He advanced on sacrifice bunt by Gilmer Lampe, then reached third base on a wild pitch, but then stranded. Beginning with the sac-bunt, Cordemans retired eight batters in a row. The veteran righthander then walked lead-off hitter Joris van Ballegooy in the fourth inning. Cordemans followed with a strikeout, then Dennis De Quint also walked. Cordemans again struckout the next batter, but then Jordan Illis reached on an error by short stop Jesse Aussems, which enabled Van Ballegooy to score. Omar Williams followed with a single, but then De Quint was thrown out at the plate by Aussems when he tried to score. Amsterdam got into scoring position three times in its five at bats. In the first inning, Nick Urbanus walked with two outs and stole second base, but then was left behind. In the fourth, Kenny Berkenbosch singled with two outs and Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch, but they als stranded. In the fifth, again with two outs, Linoy Croes walked and stole second base, but stranded. Cordemans and Van Zijl are currently the pitchers-of-record. Of course, they are eligible to return to the mound when the game resumes on Saturday, but they almost surely will be relieved. On Saturday, the game will resume at 12 PM. Amsterdam Pirates has organized several activities for the opening of the new season before the regular scheduled game, which has a starting time of 2 PM. The second game will start some 30 minutes after completion of the remainder of the opening game.
