CLEARWATER, Florida (USA) - Another Dutch player has come into action in a game for a Major League-team during Spring Training. On Monday (March 16), infielder Sharlon Schoop played in a few innings for the Baltimore Orioles in a 16-4 victory at Philadelphia Phillies.

Sharlon Schoop is another member last years Netherlands National Baseball Team to play in this years Spring Training. Last year, Schoop captured the European title with the Dutch squad on the European Championship in the Czech Republic. Also playing for that team was outfielder Randolph Oduber, who last Saturday played in his first Spring Training-game of the season for the Washington Nationals.

The 27-year old Sharlon Schoop is the older brother of Jonathan Schoop (23), who was the second baseman for the Orioles in the big win against the Phillies. The Schoop-brothers both were members of the Dutch squad that captured the World Championship-title in Panama in 2011. Sharlon also played for the Orange Team in the World Championship of 2009 in the Netherlands and Italy. By the way, teammates of Sharlon in the 2009 Dutch squad were pitcher Kenley Jansen and short stop Didi Gregorius, who now of course are on the 40-man rosters of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees respectively.

Earlier this Spring Training, Dutch players Carlton Daal (Philadelphia Phillies), Ozhaino Albies (Atlanta Braves), Spencer Kieboom (Washington Nationals), Shawn Zarraga (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Randolph Oduber (Washington Nationals) played in a Spring Training-game as either a non-roster invitee or added minor league-player. Six other Dutch players are currently on 40-man rosters, being Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), Didi Gregorius (New York Yankees), Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers), Jurickson Profar (Texas Rangers), Jonathan Schoop (Baltimore Orioles) and Andrelton Simmons (Atlanta Braves). Two Dutchmen, who played in the Majors the last seasons, are non-roster invitees, being Roger Bernadina and Jair Jurrjens (both Colorado Rockies). Jansen and Profar are currently injured.

Another familiar name (at least when you know the Major League-history) was in the Baltimore line-up on Monday, as Mike Yastrzemski played in rightfield for the O's in the last five innings in his sixth Spring Training-game. Mike is the grandson of the legendary Carl Yastrzemski, who played in 23 seasons in the Major League, all for the Boston Red Sox. Mike's father and of course the son of 'Yaz', also named Mike (Carl Michael Jr.), participated in the Haarlem Baseball Week in the Netherlands in 1982 as a guest-player in the team of Mississippi State University. Mike Sr. played professionally in the organization of the Atlanta Braves (1984-1985) and Chicago White Sox (1986-1988). He unfortunately passed away in 2004 of a heart attack, being only 43 years old. Last year, Mike Jr. played in the All Star Game of the South Atlantic League and then was a teammate of Dutch/American catcher Spencer Kieboom, who made his Spring Trainingp-debut earlier this month.

Like Oduber on Saturday, Schoop was an added minor league-player to be an extra player for Monday's game.

Sharlon Schoop entered the game defensively as short stop in the bottom of the 6th inning, replacing third baseman Jimmy Paredes in the batting order. He was then the lead-off hitter in the top of the 7th inning and grounded out. His next at bat was to be in the 9th inning, but then he was replaced by pinch-hitter Sean Halton, who went on to double and score a run. Like Schoop, Halton was added to the team for Monday's game.

Jonathan Schoop was the 2nd baseman and went 1-for-4 in the game in which he played one inning defensively with his brother. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Sharlon took over at second base for Jonathan, who was replaced by Ozzie Martinez, who became the new short stop.

In Monday's game, the Orioles collected 21 basehits, including three by Chris Davis. Five Oriole-players homered, being Davis, Jimmy Paredes, Steve Pearce, Nolan Reimold and Dariel Alvarez.

Sharlon Schoop also played in one Spring Training-game for the Orioles last year and then was 0-for-2, but scored one run.
