HCAW avoids sweep vs. The Hawks
Nederlands
DORDRECHT (Neth.) - HCAW avoided a 3-game sweep on Sunday (May 17) by winning 13-9 in a long game against Mampaey The Hawks that lasted almost 3 1/2 hours.

With the win, HCAW not only avoided a sweep, it also avoided being surpassed by The Hawks. Another loss would have meant that HCAW dropped to last place.

Today's game had a rare feature, as it was led by an all-rookie umpiring crew. Home Plate Umpire André Eijpe appeared in only in his second game in the Dutch big league, as did 1B Umpire Peter de Haan. Belgian Umpire Ken Macri was active in his first regular season-game in the highest Dutch league of this year. He had made his debut two years ago on July 21, 2013 when he was one of the umpires at the HCAW vs. ADO Lakers game. Last year, he officiated one game in the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off between The Hawks and DSS. Eijpe made his big league-debut on April 30, De Haan officiated in his first game this Saturday (May 16).

HCAW collected 16 basehits today, including three by Jarreau Martina and Rowan van Hoek. Julian Goins went 4-for-4 for The Hawks.

(May 17)

HCAW appeared to be en route to a mercy-rule victory, as it led 13-3 after four innings. But The Hawks then scored a run in the fifth and HCAW was unable to regain a 10-run dfference. It even had to give up five more runs that made it a 13-9 final score.

HCAW scored its first run in the first inning when Jarreau Martina led off with a triple and scored on an one-out single by Raoell Kortstam.

The Bussum-squad then rallied for four runs in each of the next three innings.

In the second, Max Clarijs and Jarreau Martina singled with one out. Next, Roy Seltenrijch popped up for an infield-fly (which was not caught). With two outs, the bases got loaded when Raoell Kortstam was hit by a pitch. The bases were then cleared on a following double by Rossini Frolijk, who scored himself when next batter Boyd Tuhumury also doubled.

The Hawks scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning when Gregory Trinidad singled and scored on a double by Julian Goins.

In the third, HCAW added four more runs. Gianni Frolijk and Rowan van Hoek led off with singles, which led to a pitching change. The two then moved on a passed ball and scored on an one-out triple by Jarreau Martina. A sacrifice fly by Roy Seltenrijch and an error accounted for the next two runs.

Trailing 9-1, The Hawks got two runs back in its third at bat thanks to a sac-fly by Berend Ruben and a grounder by Steven Wharwood.

HCAW then staged another 4-run rally in the top of the fourth to put the score almost out of reach. Gianni Frolijk led off with a single and scored on a triple by Rowan van Hoek. After a pitching change, Roy Seltenrijch added a 2-run triple and scored himself on a single by Rossini Frolijk. This gave HCAW a 10-run difference lead, but the team was unable to finish the game via the mercy-rule in seven innings.

The Hawks made it a 9-run difference in the fifth inning via a double by Wharwood.

In the seventh and eighth inning, the home team added five more runs to narrow the deficit to 13-9.

In the seventh, an error and a sac-fly by Wharwood accounted for two runs. In the eighth, a single by pinch-hitter Brian Raap, an grounder (after a pitching change) by Odion Gouverneur and triple by Stephen Henson brought in three runs. HCAW's lead didn't come into jeopardy, but it needed almost 3 1/2 hours to complete this victory.
