Dutch Junior close preliminary round EC with No-Hit ShutOut
Nederlands
OSTRAVA (Czech Republic) - The Dutch Junior Team closed the Preliminary Round of the European Junior Championship on Friday (July 17) with a big 15-0 shutout-win in five innings vs. Russia.

Dutch pitchers Darryl Jamoena (4 innings) and Aaron Groot (1 inning) threw a combined No-Hitter.

The Dutch Team collected 11 basehits, including three by Olivier Severino van der Wijst, who doubled twice and had five runs batted in. Ruben Prins and Ties Beeke batted in three runs.

The Dutch Team now will play its next game on Saturday-afternoon, which will be the Semi-Final. In the game schedule, the winner of Pool B is listed to play in the evening, while the second placed team is scheduled to play at 3 PM. But as host Czech Republic (which ended in second place) always plays in the evening, the games are switched.

The Dutch Team will meet France in the Semi-Final. Tonight, France lost 10-8 to Spain, which initially appeared to finish in second place. Spain and France ended in a 3-way tie with Germany, but as all had won their head-to-head game, that resulted in a new tie. The next tie-breaker is the Team Quality Balance. In the eighth inning, Spain led comfortable with a 10-3 score. Based on the TQB this would have given the Spanish squad the second place, followed by Germany in third and France in fourth place. However, France then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which changed the situation completely. The TQB now was in favor of France, which finished in second place, while Spain dropped to fourth place.
Italy finished in first place in Pool A, also remaining unbeaten.

Friday's scores:
Pool A: France vs. Spain 8-10, Great Britain vs. Italy 6-16 (7)
Pool B: Russia vs. Netherlands 0-15 (5), Croatia vs. Czech Republic, 0-11 (7)

The Dutch Juniors won big today, but led 'only' 7-0 after four innings. The Orange squad then rallied for eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to finish the game via the 15-run difference mercy-rule.

In the opening at bat, Olivier Severino van der Wijst led off with a single, advanced on an error and wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Draijer.

Two runs were added in the second inning. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Ties Beeke, Tijmen Takke and Tommy van de Sanden all singled. Severino van der Wijst then followed with a 2-run double to make it a 3-0 score.

In the third inning, the Orange squad again scored twice. Max Draijer led off with a walk, then scored when an error followed on a double by Ruben Prins. A passed ball enabled Prins to move to second base and he scored on a 2-out single by Ties Beeke.

Two runs were also scored in the fourth inning after a pitching change. Max Draijer accounted for the first run via a sacrifice fly. The bases then got loaded when three batters walked, leading to a new pitching change. Ties Beeke then also walked to bring in a run, but the Dutch Team then stranded three runners.

The Dutch Juniors then rallied for eight runs in the fifth to lift the lead to 15-0. All runs were scored with two outs and all were unearned. With one out, Severino van der Wijst reached on an error, then Menno Lenting singled. A force out then followed on a grounder by Draijer, which would have accounted for the third out when the error was not made. But now the inning continued, resulting in an 8-run rally. The bases got loaded when Julian Rip walked. Next batter Ruben Prins also walked and as ball-four was a wild pitch, it led to two runs. A following double by Chiel Berkhout then brought in two more runs. The next run was scored when an error was made on a grounder by Beeke. Hereafter, the bases were loaded again when Takke walked. Severino van der Wijst followed with a baseclearing, 3-run double that made it 15-0. It also led to a pitching change.

In the first inning, Dutch starter Darryl Jamoena walked lead-off batter Nikita Laykov, who then moved on a sacrifice bunt. Moments later, he was caught stealing at third base. In the second inning, a Russian batter reached on an error with two outs, then Jamoena hit the next batter with a pitch, but then closed with a strikeout. Jamoena retired the side in the third and fourth inning, then was relieved by Aaron Groot in the fifth inning. With the Dutch Team leading 15-0, Groot walked lead-off hitter Iliya Vorobyev in the bottom of the fifth. He then was supported with a double play and ended the inning and the game with a strikeout.
