DSS almost stunts vs. Kinheim
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - On Saturday-afternoon (April 18), playing at home, DSS almost stunted against Corendon Kinheim, which failed to take more distance in the first three innings when starting pitcher Kevin Bosch walked nine batters.

After winning 10-1 in the opener on Thursday-evening, Kinheim today took a quick 4-0 lead, but this time saw DSS come closer. DSS came alongside and even took a 5-4 lead into the eighth inning.

But then Kinheim tied the score, then scored another run in the ninth on a throwing error to win 6-5.

(April 18)

Rookie-pitcher Kevin Bosch started for DSS. The righthander made his big league-debut on August 10 last year when he started in the final regular season-game for L&D Amsterdam Pirates against Vaessen Pioniers. After the season, he transfered to DSS, where he made his first appearance of the season this afternoon against Kinheim.

Bosch gave up only one basehit, but walked nine batters and hit one in 2 2/3 inning. Four of those batters scored to give Kinheim an early lead.

In the first at bat, Bosch walked lead-off hitter Kevin Moesquit, who then stole second and third base. The bases got loaded when two more batters walked with one out, then Moesquit scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeffrey Arends.

In the second inning, Kinheim added three more runs with two outs. Bosch began with a strikeout but then walked Jochem Koedijk, who also stole second base. Next, first baseman Tino van Erk caught a line drive hit by Jasper Keijzer for the second out. Bosch then ran into problems as the bases got loaded when Moesquit walked again and Mervin Gario was hit by a pitch. A walk for Dashenko Ricardo then led to a run and Dudley Leonora followed with a 2-run single to make it 4-0. Another walk followed, but Kinheim then left the bases loaded.

In the third inning, Koedijk (with one out) and Moesquit (with two outs) walked again. Hereafter, Bosch was relieved by Mark van Deursen, who hit Gario with a pitch to load the bases. But Kinheim again left the bases loaded when short stop Mitchell Dautzenberg made a great play on a hard grounder by Ricardo to end the inning.

Kinheim failed to take more distance in these three at bats, as it stranded eight runners.

Kinheim was then silenced by Mark van Deursen, another rookie. Last season, Van Deursen played in the Rookie League-team of Kinheim and pitched in two games of the big league-squad, facing Neptunus and Pioniers. Today, he faced his former club and threw four-plus strong innings. The righthander retired the side in the fourth. He then gave up singles to Dexter de Weert and Jochem Koedijk to start the sixth inning. De Weert, who played in one Play-Down game with HCAW last season, made his big league-debut and his single came in his third at bat. With one out, Moesquit lined the ball back to Van Deursen where it ricocheted off his spike to third baseman Sven Jongejans, who was able to throw out the batter at first base. With a little bit more luck it even might have ended in a double play when Jongejans would have had the time to force out the runner on third base, then eliminate the batter. But Kinheim this time left runners on second third base. Van Deursen then walked a batter with two outs in the sixth, but again encountered no problems. A highlight came in the seventh inning when he struckout the side.

,,I wanted to give my starter a chance to get into the game'', DSS Pitching Coach Rik Geestman said after the game. ,,But unfortunately that didn't happen. Van Deursen then pitched a helluva game.''

In the meantime, DSS not only narrowed the deficit, but even took the lead off of starter Nick Veltkamp.

The lefthander retired the first six batters, then walked Joffrey Heus and Lex Leijenaar to start the third inning. But then Kinheim turned a double play and Veltkamp ended the at bat by catching a line drive hit by Mark Smit.

DSS got two (unearned) runs back in the fourth of the well-visited game. Sven Jongejans reached on an error and Mitchell Koot singled. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Miner, then both scored on a 2-out double by Levine Gabriëls.

In the sixth inning, DSS appeared to turn the game its way. With two outs, Miner singled through the left-side, then Tino van Erk and Gabriëls walked to load the bases. A following single by Joffrey Heus then brought in two runs to tie the score and led to a pitching change. Pim Walsma took over, but began with a wild pitch that gave DSS a 5-4 lead. He then ended the at bat with a strikeout.

After having pitched four fine innings, Van Deursen came back in the top of the eighth, but might have pitched just one batter too many. He walked lead-off hitter Kevin Moesquit (who walked four times) and was relieved by Max Ploegstra. Moesquit then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mervin Gario and a wild pitch, then scored the tying run on a single by Dashenko Ricardo, before a double play ended the inning.

Kinheim then decided the game in the top of the ninth. Jeffrey Arends led off with a double. Sven van de Sanden then put down a bunt, which was fielded by Ploegstra, who attempted to eliminate Arends at third base. However, the runner would have been safe, so the batter was credited with a sacrifice bunt. To make things worse, Ploegstra's throw ended up in foul territory enabling Arends to score what would be the decisive run.

DSS got a chance to at least tie the score in the home off the ninth off of closer Arshwin Asjes, who got the bases loaded with no outs! He gave up a lead-off single to Lex Leijenaar, then made a throwing error on a sac-bunt by Mitchell Dautzenberg to put runners on second and third base. To set up a force play, Mark Smit was walked intentionally to load the bases. That was successful, as Leijenaar was forced out home on a grounder by Sven Jongejans. Asjes then had a strong ending, as he struckout the next two batters to end the inning and the game, earning his first save of the season.
