Neptunus ends Kinheim's winning streak with shutout
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus shutout Corendon Kinheim 8-0 on Saturday-afternoon (June 20). With this, Kinheim's winning streak of twelve games came to an end.

With the win, Neptunus moved back into second place, while Kinheim now dropped to third place.

Neptunus outhit Kinheim 14-3 and had six players who collected two basehits. Kinheim also committed four defensive errors, which contributed to six unearned runs.

(June 20)

It wasn't a good start for Kinheim in Rotterdam. It not only lost the game, it also lost Kevin Moesquit. The second baseman led off the game with a single, but just after reaching first base, he grabbed his leg and stumbled back to the base. A brief delay followed and Niels van Weert took over as pinch-runner for Moesquit, who injured his hamstring. It was reported that he might be out for at least two weeks. Van Weert advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mervin Gario, then Bryan Engelhardt walked, but the runners were left behind.

In its first at bat, Neptunus opened the score quickly off of starter Nick Veltkamp. Stijn van der Meer led off with a single and Dwayne Kemp reached on a bunt-single. Benjamin Dille followed with a double and so, the first run was born.

The home team added its next run in the second inning. With one out, Gyenuar Lopez doubled down the leftfield-line and this time, Shaldimar Daantji reached on a bunt-single. With runners on first and third base, Daantji was forced out on a grounder by Stijn van der Meer, but that also enabled Lopez to score the second run. The inning then ended with a double play.

After two scoreless innings, Neptunus rallied for four (unearned) runs in the fifth at bat. Dwayne Kemp led off with a double, then appeared to be eliminated via either a pick-off or rundown, but a throwing error enabled him to reach third base safely. With one out, Kemp scored on a wild pitch. After a pop-fly accounted for the second out, Rien Vernooij tripled down the rightfield-line and scored on a following double by Christian Diaz, which almost ended in a collission between leftfielder Bryan Engelhardt and centerfielder Jochem Koedijk. The latter made a diving attempt to catch the ball, but it dropped on the grass. Moments later, Adrian Anthony delivered a runscoring single to bring in Diaz. Neptunus got another baserunner when Gyenuar Lopez walked and that marked the end for Nick Veltkamp, who had given up eleven basehits. David Bergman took over, but his first pitch ended in an RBI-single by Shaldimar Daantji that lifted the lead to 6-0.

After Bergman retired the side in the sixth, Neptunus added two more runs in the seventh inning off of reliever Scott Ronnenbergh. Rien Vernooij reached on an error, then the bases got loaded when Christian Diaz walked and Adrian Anthony singled. Gyenuar Lopez then singled in a run and when an outfield-error followed, another run was scored. After a flyout, the inning ended with a double play, which was Kinheim's third in the game and league-leading 41st of the season.

Kenny Van Den Branden threw seven solid innings for Neptunus and gave up only three basehits. With one out in the second inning, the righthander walked Phil Ortez, but then Neptunus turned a double play. The Belgian then retired the side in the third and fourth inning. In the fifth, Ortez reached base again, this via single, but two outs followed. In the seventh, it again was Ortez who reached base for Kinheim, this time on a throwing error with two outs. Victor Draijer then followed with a double, but the Haarlem-squad left two runners in scoring position.

In the eighth inning, Kevin Kelly took over the pitching and retired the side, including two strikeouts. Loek van Mil pitched the ninth inning for Neptunus. The big righthander walked a batter, but also struckout three to end the game.
