Amsterdam Pirates shuts out HCAW in 7 innings
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates shutout HCAW 10-0 in Saturday-afternoon (June 20). Amsterdam is now the only unbeaten team in the second half of the regular season, as Corendon Kinheim lost today at Curaçao Neptunus.

Pirates struck early in the game, thanks to homeruns by Roelie Henrique and Linoy Croes. The one hit by Croes was a grand slam. Starting pitcher Kevin Heijstek gave up only two basehits in six innings.

(June 20)

Amsterdam Pirates set the tone today in the first two innings. Starting pitcher Kevin Heijstek retired the side in both innings and was supported with five runs, thanks to two homeruns.

In the bottom of the first inning, Roelie Henrique led off by hitting a homerun on the first pitch thrown by Bob Klaarenbeek. The lefthander initially wasn't announced as starting pitcher, as righthander Giovanni Tensen was originally named. However, earlier in the week Tensen hurt his ankle during a practice session and wasn't ready yet to pitch today.

In the bottom of the second inning, Amsterdam got the bases loaded with one out. Remco Draijer led off with a walk, then reached second base safely when an error was made during his steal-attempt with one out. Next, Rashid Gerard also walked. After two runners had executed a double steal, the bases got loaded when Jorin van Amstel also was walked by Klaarenbeek. Hereafter, Linoy Croes (who last season played for HCAW) connected well on a 2-2 pitch and hit a grand slam homerun down the rightfield-line to give Pirates a quick 5-0 lead.

Croes hit his last big league-homerun on April 18, 2013 when he played for HCAW at Vaessen Pioniers, which then was his former team. He then homered off a pitcher with almost the same name. Today, he homered off Bob Klaarenbeek, in 2013 he homered off Joran Klarenbeek.

Some more facts, in 2013, Croes homered playing for HCAW, today, he homered against HCAW. Three players witnessed both homeruns while playing in the game. They are Kevin Nieveld and Max Clarijs, who played in both games for HCAW. Jorin van Amstel also played for HCAW in 2013, but now plays for Amsterdam. Umpire Rob Has was at first base in the 2013 game and today, he was at third base.

With a 5-0 lead, Heijstek continued his dominance in the next innings. The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Rowan van Hoek in the third inning, but followed with two strikeouts. He then saw Van Hoek being caught stealing to end the at bat. In the fourth, Heijstek gave up an one-out single to Roy Seltenrijch, then was supported with a double play. He the retired the side again in the fifth and sixth inning, striking out the last four batters he faced. Daan Hendrix completed the game and got three groundouts in the seventh inning.

Pirates added two runs in the third inning off of Kaj Timmermans, who had relieved Klaarenbeek after the grand slam by Croes. With one out, Kenny Berkenbosch walked and Remco Draijer doubled. The two scored when Koen Nooij followed with a single. Singles by Rashid Gerard and Jorin van Amstel loaded the bases, but the home team then stranded three runners when two strikeouts followed.

In the fourth, Amsterdam scored its eighth run. With one out, Nick Urbanus and Kenny Berkenbosch walked, then both advanced on a wild pitch. The run was then scored when both runners were awarded the next base on a balk by Tim Niekerk, who had relieved Timmermans with two outs in the previous inning.

HCAW turned a double play in the fifth inning, but gave up another run in the sixth. With one out, Amsterdam got the bases loaded, then Michael Duursma scored when another balk was committed by Niekerk.

The 10-run difference was reached with one out in the seventh inning. After Rashid Gerard led off with a walk, first baseman Kevin Nieveld took over the pitching and began with a wild pitch. After a foul-out, Gerard scored the tenth run on a walk-off double by Linoy Croes, who had five runs batted in today.
