Kinheim turns deficit into extra inning win vs. Pirates
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - Corendon Kinheim saw an 1-0 lead in the first inning being erased on Thursday-evening (June 25) vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates, then faced a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kinheim then rallied with five runs, highlighted by a 3-run homerun to take a 6-4 lead. But Amsterdam came alongside in the eighth, also thanks to a homerun. In these innings, two pitchers were credited with a Blown Save.

In the tenth inning, Kinheim won the game 7-6, thanks to a basesloaded, walk-off single by Dudley Leonora.

And that ended a very attractive game, which offered nice plays, some discussions, rule-knowledge, an almost wrong batter, an overturned call, a disputed homerun and a come-from-behind victory. But in the end, all calls were correct and the umpiring crew did a fine job!

(June 25)

After Amsterdam was retired in order in its first at bat, Kinheim opened the score moments later in the bottom of the first inning. Mervin Gario led off with a single and stole second base. With two outs and after a walk for Phil Ortez, he scored on a single by Jeffrey Arends. Ortez tried to advance to third base, but was thrown out there to end the inning, but the run already had scored before the out was made.

In its first three innings, Amsterdam reached base only once off of Tom Stuifbergen. The righthander retired seven batters in a row, then gave up a single to Patrick Bok with one out in the third, but then an inning-ending double play followed.

After having giving up the run in the first inning, Burgersdijk threw five solid innings, allowing only two batters to reach base. The first was Dudley Leonora, who led off the second inning with a walk. However, Leonora almost didn't led off the inning, as Dashenko Ricardo stepped up to the plate in his place. It was reported that, before the first pitch was thrown, Ricardo noticed Leonora's name on the scoreboard instead of his and then, the starting line-ups were checked by Head Coach Wim Martinus and Home Plate Umpire Henri van Heijningen. As a result, a batting out of turn was avoided, as Leonora switched with Ricardo. Of course, Amsterdam's Head Coach Charles Urbanus came out for an explanation, as a wrong batter is an appeal situation. But the right batter can step in any moment during an at bat when the fault is discovered. However, should Ricardo have completed the at bat and reached base, Amsterdam could have appealed and we would have a batting out of turn situation.

Moments after Leonora had reached base, he was eliminated. He took off to steal, stopped, then was surprised by a throw from Burgersdijk and was tagged out. Hereafter, Burgersdijk retired the next ten batters in a row. In the fifth inning, the righthander gave up a 2-out double to Sven van de Sanden, but he stranded on second base.

A nice play was made in the fourth inning by second baseman Nick Urbanus. Jeffrey Arends grounded the ball back to Burgersdijk, but it jumped over his head. Burgersdijk moved backwards, but was unable to reach the ball. In the meantime, Urbanus had come in, fielded the ball and made a nice out at first base.

In the top of the fourth inning, Amsterdam scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Roelie Henrique led off with a single and advanced on a sac-bunt by Michael Duursma. He then scored the tying run on a double by Nick Urbanus. On the next play, there was what we could call a 'challenge' without a television-replay. Kenny Berkenbosch grounded the ball to third baseman Mervin Gario, who then made a high throw to first baseman Jeffrey Arends. He had to come off his base, caught the ball, then, behind his back, tagged Berkenbosch before he had reached base. However, that happened out of view of 1B Umpire Rudsel Schoobaar, who ruled Berkenbosch safe. After an argument from Kinheim's Head Coach Wim Martinus, the umpiring crew got together and the call was overturned, resulting in an out. Urbanus was unable to advance on the play, but then scored the go-ahead run when Remco Draijer singled.

In the fifth inning, Rashid Gerard and Patrick Bok led off for Pirates with singles, but then a bunt ended in a foul-fly and a double play closed the inning.

Amsterdam added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lead-off hitter Bas Nooij was hit by a pitch, then Rashid Gerard singled. Nooij was then forced out on third base on a bunt by Patrick Bok, but Linoy Croes followed with a runscoring single. Bok advanced to third base, then scored the next run on a force play-grounder by Roelie Henrique.

Trailing 4-1, Kinheim rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Phil Ortez and Jeffrey Arends both walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Dudley Leonora. Hereafter, short stop Michael Duursma made a nice play on a grounder by Dashenko Ricardo, which led to a run and a pitching change. Tom de Blok took over, but ran into problems immediately. He first walked Sven van de Sanden, then gave up a runscoring single to Jochem Koedijk that narrowed Kinheim's deficit to 4-3. Next, Mervin Gario drilled a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right-centerfield for a 3-run homerun to give Kinheim a 6-4 lead. When next batter Victor Draijer (the brother of Amsterdam's Remco Draijer) also walked, De Blok was replaced by Robin Schel. The lefthander initially also began by walking Bryan Engelhardt, but a flyout then ended the inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, Pim Walsma took over the pitching, but became the second pitcher tonight to be credited with a Blown Save, De Blok was the other. He gave up a lead-off single to Nick Urbanus, then two outs followed. With an 1-1 count, Bas Nooij, who had struckout in two of his three previous plate appearances, hit the ball into right-centerfield. There, it ended up on top of the fence, then fell behind it for a 2-run homerun. It again brought out Kinheim's Head Coach Wim Martinus, who went to Home Plate Umpire Henri van Heijningen, regarding the fact that the ball had first hit the top of the fence. A brief deliberation between the umpires followed, resulting in the homerun remaining a homerun. Martinus then also paid a visit seperately to the other two umpires, but of course nothing changed. After a 2-minute delay, the game continued, then the inning ended when leftfielder Bryan Engelhardt made a great catch on a deep drive by Rashid Gerard.

In the top of the ninth, closer Arshwin Asjes took over the pitching for Kinheim and retired the side.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kinheim got close to the winning run off of Daan Hendrix, who had taken over the Amsterdam-pitching the inning before. In the ninth, Jochem Koedijk led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mervin Gario. Next, it was leftfielder Roelie Henrique who made a great catch on a drive by Victor Draijer. With Koedijk on second base, two outs and first base open, a force play was created by walking powerhitter Bryan Engelhardt intentionally. Hereafter, Phil Ortez singled to leftfield. Koedijk moved to third base and while the ball was in short leftfield and about to be picked up by Henrique, 3B Coach Mike Crouwel waved him home. Koedijk ended up short and was tagged out at the plate to end the inning. By sending the runner home, the pressure was put on the defense, as the throw had to be perfect and it was.

But with that, the score was still tied and so, the game went into extra innings. And that meant the tie-break rule with runners on first and second base, a rule which is still much opposed by baseball-lovers.

In the top of the tenth inning, tie-break runners Linoy Croes and Roelie Henrique advanced on sacrifice bunt by Michael Duursma. Hereafter, Nick Urbanus was walked intentionally to create a force play. Next, Kenny Berkenbosch hit a hard line drive to third baseman Mervin Gario, who made an unassisted double play to end the inning. It was the third double play by Kinheim tonight, lifting its league-lead to 45.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, Bryan Engelhardt and Phil Ortez were scheduled to be the tie-break runners. It was initially announced that Jasper Keijzer and Niels van Weert were to be their pinch-runners, but in the end only Van Weert entered the game running for Ortez at first base. A sacrifice bunt followed to advance the runners, but when an error was made, batter Jeffrey Arends also reached base safely. With the bases loaded, Dudley Leonora hit the ball into centerfield for a walk-off single to give Kinheim a 7-6 win and end an exciting and attractive game and evening in the historic Pim Mulier Stadium in Haarlem.
