First loss for Pioniers

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - On a cold and rainy Sunday (April 26), Vaessen Pioniers suffered its first loss of the season, as it was outscored by UVV 8-3.

The team from Vleuten opened the season with a 2-0 shutout-win at L&D Amsterdam Pirates, but then lost four games in a row. Pioniers had started the season with five wins, including four shutouts, before losing this afternoon.

Jim Ploeger had a fine outing for UVV, giving up only four hits in eight innings, while striking out nine batters.

UVV struck early with four runs in the second inning off of starting pitcher Reggie Bomberg. In the inning, the defense of Pioniers committed three errors. Gilmer Lampe led off with a single, then Dennis De Quint reached on an error. The two advanced on a passed ball and a grounder by Omar Williams produced the first run. Mike Bazuin followed with an RBI-triple, then scored himself when Jordan Illis singled. The latter was able to move to second base when an outfield-error followed, then advanced on a sac-bunt by Jamie Verheyleweghen and scored the fourth run when an error was made on a bunt by Norbert Jongerius.

In the bottom of the third inning, Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 4-3 by scoring three runs off of starter Jim Ploeger. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Kevin Weijgertse, who then moved on a sac-bunt by Max Draijer. The bases got loaded when Ploeger walked Daniel Fernandes and Danny Rombley. A run was then scored when Dirk van 't Klooster grounded out and two more were added on a following single by Vince Rooi. Hearefter, Ploeger retired nine of the next ten batters.

UVV added a run in the fourth when Mike Bazuin led off with a double and scored after a pitching change on a sacrifice fly by Norbert Jongerius.

UVV scored another run in the seventh off of Sedley Karel, the third pitcher for Pioniers this afternoon. With two outs, Joris van Ballegooy walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Tony Enos.

Trailing 6-3, Pioniers got the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. But hereafter, Ploeger struckout Daniel Fernandes and Danny Rombley. A grounder by Dirk van 't Klooster ended the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

The lead was increased with two more runs in the eighth at bat off of Swen Huijer. Dennis De Quint led off with a double, then scored when a throwing error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Omar Williams. The latter was eliminated himself when he tried to advance to second base. Next, Mike Bazuin singled and his pinch-runner Rick Kuipers then went on to score on a single by Jordan Illis to make it 8-3.
