Heijstek, Urbanus lead Amsterdam Pirates to victory
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - After losing in ten innings on Thursday-evening, L&D Amsterdam Pirates recovered and won on Saturday (June 27) with a 7-2 score at Corendon Kinheim.

Kevin Heijstek went the distance for Amsterdam and did a fine job, giving up only four hits in nine innings.

Leading 1-0, Amsterdam rallied for five runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a grand slam homerun by Nick Urbanus.

The game began with a 2-man umpiring crew and ended with a 3-man crew. Rob Has, who was assigned as 3B Umpire, and his wife Tineke Has, who was the Official Scorer for this game, both arrived late in the stadium. En route to Haarlem, they got stuck in a big traffic jam. This was caused by a severe accident on the highway from Alkmaar towards Haarlem, which led to the closure of the road for several hours. The two game officials joined their colleagues in the sixth inning. In the first five innings, veteran umpires Henri van Heijningen and Olav Steijger had handled the game. Linda Steijger, who assigned as Play-by-Play Scorer, did both the scoring and play-by-play on her own in the first five innings.

Due to the traffic jam, the women softball-team of Alcmaria Victrix also got stuck en route to Santpoort for their double-header at Terrasvogels in the Golden League. The first game eventually went underway, delayed by one hour and 25 minutes.

Amsterdam opened the score with one run in the first at bat off of starting pitcher Glenn Wassink, who was a late replacement for initial named starter Nick Veltkamp. Wassink had no starting assignment in the 3-game series vs. Amsterdam. Veltkamp was named as starter for Kinheim in today's game, but the lefthander was replaced, as he was bothered by some back-problems. Wassink took his place instead.

In the opening at bat, Roelie Henrique led off with a single and advanced to third base when a pick-off at first base by the catcher ended in a throwing error. Moments later, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Duursma.

Wassink retired the side in the second and fourth inning. In between, he hit Rashid Gerard and Koen Nooij with a pitch to start the third at bat. They moved on a sac-bunt by Roelie Henrique. Gerard was later eliminated at home on a grounder by Michael Duursma, then a flyout ended the inning, stranding two runners.

Amsterdam-pitcher Kevin Heijstek retired the first six batters he faced and didn't allow a basehit in the first four innings.

Amsterdam took a deciding lead by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jesse Aussems led off with a walk and next batter Rashid Gerard was hit by a pitch. The bases got loaded when Koen Nooij singled. After Roelie Henrique flied out, a run was scored when Michael Duursma walked. That led to a pitching change and Scott Ronnenbergh took over with the bases loaded. He got to a 3-1 count on Nick Urbanus, who then connected well on his next delivery and drove the ball over the fence in rightfield for a grand slam homerun that lifted the lead to 6-0. For Urbanus, this was hit first regular season big league-homerun!

In the top of the sixth inning, Amsterdam added another run. Bas Nooij led off with a single, moved on a single by Jesse Aussems, then scored on a double by Rashid Gerard. With one out, the bases got loaded when Roelie Henrique walked, but the inning then ended when Michael Duursma lined into a double play.

Heijstek gave up his first basehit in the fifth inning when Dudley Leonora singled, but he stranded on first base.

Trailing 7-0, Kinheim scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning. The bases got loaded when Niels van Weert and Mervin Gario walked and Victor Draijer singled. Following grounders by Bryan Engelhardt and Phil Ortez then brought in two runs.

In the remainder of the game, Heijstek held Kinheim scoreless and gave up only two more basehits to win his eighth game of the season.
