UVV scores late to shutout HCAW
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - The game between UVV and HCAW remained scoreless for seven innings in a pitching-duel between Jim Ploeger (UVV) and Maickel Rietel (HCAW). UVV then scored three runs in the eighth inning to win 3-0.

HCAW collected only three basehits in this regional derby, while UVV got eight, including three by Jamie Verheyleweghen.

In the productive eighth at bat, just after the third run was scored, tempers flared and the benches cleared, but no one was ejected.

(June 27)

UVV-starter Jim Ploeger threw eight strong innings in which he struckout seven batters and gave up only one basehit.

In the first inning, the lefthander walked Roy Seltenrijch with one out, but then Kevin Nieveld grounded into a double play. In the second, he walked Jelle Blaauw with two outs. Hereafter, Ploeger retired the next 14 batters in a row. With one out in the seventh inning, Ploeger walked Kevin Nieveld, then his No-Hitter ended when Emersson Paula reached on a bunt-single. Moments later, UVV turned another double play to end the inning and so, HCAW stranded two runners.

In the eighth, HCAW again got two baserunners. With one out, Jarreau Martina was hit by a pitch and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Max Clarijs. Pinch-hitter Gianni Frolijk then walked, but Ploeger closed with a strikeout.

Maickel Rietel started for HCAW and threw seven fine innings, striking out three batters and giving up four hits.

With two outs in the first inning, Rietel gave up a single to Gilmer Lampe and walked Dennis De Quint, but they were left behind. After walking De Quint, Rietel retired nine batters in a row. He then gave up a 2-out single to Mike Bazuin in the fourth inning, but he also stranded.

UVV got a bigger scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. Rietel hit lead-off hitter Norbert Jongerius with a pitch, then gave up a single to Jamie Verheyleweghen. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Dennis Ribbens. Shortly thereafter, Jongerius was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder towards third base by Joris van Ballegooy. The bases were then loaded when Tony Enos walked, but three runners stranded when Rietel ended with a strikeout.

After retiring the side in the sixth, Rietel gave up an one-out double to Jamie Verheyleweghen in the seventh, but two groundouts followed.

The bottom of the eighth inning accounted for all the action in this game. Tony Kreisel became the new pitcher for HCAW. He gave up a lead-off single to Tony Enos, but followed with a strikeout. Kreisel then hit next batter Dennis De Quint with a pitch and the bases got loaded via a bunt-single by Mike Bazuin. UVV opened the score when pinch-hitter Omar Williams hit a sacrifice fly. With two outs, the bases were re-loaded again when a bunt by Norbert Jongerius ended in a fielding error. Jamie Verheyleweghen followed with a runscoring single that made it 2-0 and led to a pitching change. Steven van Groningen took over for Kreisel and he gave up a single to Dennis Ribbens that led to a chaotic situation and also emptied the benches. On the single by Ribbens, the three runners of course advanced. Bazuin scored, while Jongerius also rounded third base en route to the plate. It was reported that Jongerius then collided by Van Groningen, who was on his way to cover the throw from centerfield. That emptied the benches, resulting in some pushing and shuffling, but the game also continued. While Jongerius continued to the plate, the ball was thrown to third base where Verheyleweghen was tagged out. The umpires restored order and discussed the situation with Head Coaches Ferenc Jongejan (UVV) and Ralph Milliard (HCAW). When the discussion ended, Radio M reported that an exchange of words between the two coaches followed. In the end, no one was ejected and the game continued. It also was decided that the run scored by Jongerius didn't count, as the third out was made before he had touched home plate.

And so, the top of the ninth inning began with a 3-0 lead for UVV. Oscar Meuris took over the pitching for Ploeger, but gave up a lead-off single to Roy Seltenrijch. With one out, he was forced out on second base on a grounder by Emersson Paula, who then advanced on a following single by Rossini Frolijk. The two runners then stranded when Meuris ended the game with a strikeout.
