Kinheim shuts out Pioniers in seven innings
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - Corendon Kinheim collected 14 basehits and got some fine pitching on Thursday-evening (May 28) in a 10-0 shutout vs. Vaessen Pioniers in a game that ended in the seventh inning due to the mercy-rule.

With the victory, Kinheim remains in contention for a Play-Off spot, but is dependable on the results of the series between L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus. Kinheim not only has to sweep Pioniers in its series, it now also has to hope that either Pirates or Neptunus end up losing their remaining two games. Only in that scenario, Kinheim will finish above one of the two teams and will qualify for a Play-Off spot.

(May 28)

It appeared that Pioniers-starter Ricardo Hernandez Sanchez needed more pitches and was throwing more 'balls' than usual. The lefthander walked seven batters and gave up nine basehits, resulting in six earned runs.

On the other hand, Glenn Wassink had a fine outing in his first start after being hit on his elbow by a line drive on May 3. He gave up only two hits in the five innings he pitched, then Pim Walsma closed the game and held Pioniers hitless.

The lone two hits of Pioniers were both hit by Max Draijer, who was the number nine hitter in the batting order.

For Kinheim, Mervin Gario and Dashenko Ricardo both went 3-for-4. Gario also had three runs batted in.

Pioniers reached base only five times tonight, with only one runner reaching second base. The powerful top-4 in the batting order (Danny Rombley, Dirk van 't Klooster, Quintin De Cuba, Vince Rooi) went 0-for-12 and neither of them reached base.

Max Draijer was the lone Pioniers-player that reached second base. In the fifth inning, he singled with two outs, then advanced on a wild pitch.

Kinheim opened the score in the second inning. With one out, Jeffrey Arends walked, then moved on a single by Dashenko Ricardo. A passed ball and wild pitch then enabled him to score the first run. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Sven van de Sanden and Jochem Koedijk walked, but three runners were left behind.

The second run was added in the third at bat and it again started with a walk. Mervin Gario led off with a walk, then moved to third base on a following single by Bryan Engelhardt. With one out, the latter was picked off and eliminated in a rundown, but that also enabled Gario to score.

Another run followed in the fourth inning and for the third time, it began with a walk. With one out, Victor Draijer walked, stole second base and scored on a single by Jochem Koedijk.

In the fifth inning, Kinheim took more distance by scoring three runs. The bases got loaded when Dudley Leonora, Jeffrey Arends and Dashenko Ricardo all singled. Ricardo's hit was a bunt and was intended to be a sacrifice to advance the runners. While it appeared that Ricardo could be eliminated, Ricardo Hernandez simply didn't get the ball in time to first base, so the bases got loaded. A strikeout followed, but then Sven van de Sanden delivered an RBI-single. Another strikeout followed, but this time, a run was added when Kevin Moesquit walked. That led to a pitching change and Dennis Buring took over. He was greeted with a runscoring single by Mervin Gario. Three runners then stranded as the inning ended with a hard line drive hit by Bryan Engelhardt being caught by first baseman Mark-Jan Moorman.

After being held scoreless in the sixth, Kinheim reached the 10-run difference in the seventh. With one out, Jochem Koedijk walked and Kevin Moesquit singled, then both scored on a double down the leftfield-line by Mervin Gario. The latter then scored himself on a single by Bryan Engelhardt. Next, a grounder by Dudley Leonora went errant and the ball ended up in foul territory rightfield. Engelhardt, who came from first base, was waved home trying to score the tenth run, but he was eliminated at the plate via a throw by rightfielder Dirk van 't Klooster. Leonora ended up on third base due to the error, but there were now two outs. However, the tenth run was scored after all moments later, thanks to a wild pitch that ended the game.
