Amsterdam moves into first place after win vs. Neptunus
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates won 6-1 on Thursday-evening (May 28) in the opening game of a 3-game series vs. Curaçao Neptunus to move into a tie for first place. Based on the head-to-head result, Amsterdam is ranked in the top position.

The series continues on Friday-evening in Amsterdam and will be concluded on Saturday in Rotterdam. Instead of the Thursday-Saturday-Sunday format, the series is played on three consecutive days due to the upcoming European Cup Tournaments. These tournaments open on Tuesday and give both Pirates and Neptunus an extra day off on Sunday. For Amsterdam, Sunday will be a travel day. The team then will travel French capital Paris, where it will play its European tournament. Neptunus will play its tournament at home in Rotterdam.

With the victory of Amsterdam and that of Corendon Kinheim vs. Vaessen Pioniers, there is no decision yet of which two teams will qualify for the Play-Offs. All four still have chances of finishing in first and/or second place.

However, Friday-evening will bring at least one decision and maybe two.

When Amsterdam also wins on Friday, it will qualify for the Play-Offs, but that also means that Pioniers will be eliminated, based on the head-to-head results against Neptunus (0-3). It also means that Kinheim can still finish ahead of Neptunus, when the Rotterdam-squad is swept and Kinheim sweeps Pioniers.

When Neptunus wins on Friday, it will qualify for the Play-Offs, but that means that the other three teams will remain in contention for the second spot. In this scenario, Kinheim can finish ahead of Amsterdam in case of a Saturday-loss of Amsterdam vs. Neptunus and a Kinheim-sweep vs. Pioniers. Another scenario in this situation is that Pioniers can qualify in case of a Saturday-loss for Amsterdam, while Pioniers itself wins on Saturday and Sunday vs. Kinheim. Pioniers then will end up in a tie with Amsterdam and will qualify based on the head-to-head result (2-1).

One thing is clear, the winner of Friday-evening's game will qualify for the Play-Offs.

Tonight was a match-up between veteran pitchers Rob Cordemans (Amsterdam) and Diegomar Markwell (Neptunus). Cordemans threw six innings, Markwell was relieved in the sixth and suffered his first loss of the season and is now 6-1.

The two starters threw three scoreless innings, then Cordemans added a fourth one, while Markwell gave up two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Before the score was opened both teams threatened to do so earlier. In the bottom of the first inning, the first four Amsterdam-batters reached base, however, two of them on a fielder's choice-grounder that forced out the previous runner. A single then put runners on first and third base, but then the third out followed.

Neptunus got even closer to scoring in the top of the second inning. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a walk and advanced on a bunt-single by Dwayne Kemp. Cordemans then struckout the next two batters. Hereafter, Shurman Marlin singled. Boekhoudt was waved home, but was thrown out at the plate by rightfielder Koen Nooij.

In the top of the fourth, Dwayne Kemp singled with one out. With two outs, he stole second and advanced on a throwing error, then stranded on third base.

Pirates then opened the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Bas Nooij walked and Remco Draijer reached on a bunt-single. The two moved on a grounder by Rashid Gerard, then scored when Koen Nooij followed with a triple.

Neptunus scored once in the fifth. With two outs, Christian Diaz walked and stole second, then scored on a single by Benjamin Dille.

Amsterdam then took more distance by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a double, then advanced on a flyout and scored when Remco Draijer reached on an error. Hereafter, Kevin Kelly took over for Markwell, but walked Rashid Gerard. After a strikeout, Kelly gave up an RBI-double to Jesse Aussems, which was followed by an outfield-error, resulting in two runs and a 5-1 score. The bases then got loaded when pinch-hitter Linoy Croes walked and Michael Duursma was hit by a pitch, but then a line drive by Nick Urbanus ended the inning.

Pirates added an insurance run in the eighth when Rashid Gerard led off with a double and went on to score on a force play-grounder by Jesse Aussems.

In the seventh inning, Cordemans was relieved by Kevin Heijstek, who normally is the number 2 starter in the rotation of Head Coach Charles Urbanus. Because of the upcoming European Cup-tournament, the rotation has been changed. By using both Cordemans and Heijstek in this game, the two will have the next days off to focus on the first games in Paris. The starters for Friday and Saturday's games are not yet assigned.

Making his debut in a Pirate-uniform tonight was Jorin van Amstel, who returned recently after completion of his college-season in the USA. Van Amstel, who last season played for HCAW, started in leftfield tonight.
