The Hawks sees big lead end in tie vs. UVV
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Mampaey The Hawks had an apparent comfortable 9-2 lead after completion of the top of the fifth inning on Thursday-evening (May 28) vs. UVV, but it wasn't enough. UVV rallied for six runs in the fifth, then came alongside in the eighth. And that resulted in an 9-9 tie. Who would have won the game, we will never know, as it was halted after eight complete innings, due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

The Hawks outhit UVV 12-11 and was held scoreless in the last three innings.

(May 28)

The Hawks had a strong start and led 5-0 in the fourth inning!

It opened the score with two runs in the first at bat. Odion Gouverneur led off with a walk, then Stephen Henson doubled with one out. A walk with two outs for Julian Goins then loaded the bases. UVV then appeared to come out of the inning unharmed when Gregory Trinidad grounded to short, but that didn't end in a force out. It kept the bases loaded and a run was scored. The next was run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Amir Daou, but that also ended in a double play, as Goins was eliminated in a rundown to end the inning.

The Hawks added a run in the third when Gouverneur led off with a single, moved on a passed ball and wild pitch, then scored on a single by Berend Ruben.

The team from Dordrecht then increased the lead to 5-0 by scoring two more runs in the fourth. With one out, Kilian Jansen singled and after he had reached base, UVV filed a protest, stating that the batter had used an illegal bat.
When the game resumed, Jansen stole second base and with two outs, he moved to third on a single by Odion Gouverneur, who also stole second base moments later. The two runners scored on a following single by Stephen Henson, who then was eliminated trying to advance to second base while the ball was returned to the infield.

UVV got two runs back in its fourth inning. With one out, Jordan Illis singled and stole second, as did following batter Jamie Verheyleweghen. A grounder by Dennis Ribbens then led to the first run. Joris van Ballegooy then walked and when he stole second base, Verheyleweghen scored.

In the top of the fifth inning, The Hawks rallied for four runs, which appeared to be decisive, as it gave the team a 9-2 lead. Berend Ruben led off with a single, then Kevin Noordzij took over the pitching for UVV. He got the bases loaded when Julian Goins (bunt) singled and Gregory Trinidad walked. A single by Amir Daou and grounder by Kilian Jansen then accounted for two runs. The bases were re-loaded when pinch-hitter Brian Raap walked. The Hawks then scored an additional run when a force play-grounder not ended the inning, but instead ended in an error. A following walk for Stephen Henson made it 9-2, but a pop-up followed, leaving the bases loaded.

Trailing 9-2, UVV made it a complete new ballgame when it rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tony Enos and Omar Williams led off with walks, then the bases got loaded when Mike Bazuin singled. Hereafter, José Moreno was brought in relief starter Quinn Tramm. Norbert Jongerius then singled in a run and after an infield-fly, Jamie Verheyleweghen doubled to bring in two runs. The bases then got loaded again when Joris van Ballegooy walked with two outs. Next, Gilmer Lampe cleared the bases with a double to bring in three runs and narrow the deficit to 9-8! It led to a new pitching change, as Tim Roodenburg took over. After Lampe advanced to third on an error, he stranded there when a flyout ended the inning.

The Hawks was unable to take more distance in the next at bats. The team left two runners in the top of the sixth. In the seventh, Brian Raap led off with a triple, then was caught stealing, tagged out by the catcher.

UVV left runners on first and second base in the seventh, but then came alongside in the eighth. Dennis De Quint led off with a triple, then scored on an one-out single by Norbert Jongerius. A single by Jordan Illis then led to runners on first and second base with one out. Kevin van Veen was brought in as new pitcher and he got a grounder from Jamie Verheyleweghen that ended in a double play. Verheyleweghen was eliminated at first base, which moved the runners. After the batter was retired, first baseman Gregory Trinidad threw the ball to third baseman Gino Hersilia, who then tagged out Jongerius to complete the double play. UVV's 3B Coach Kevin Knollenburg argued the call and was ejected. The play not only ended the inning, but also the game, as the 10:30 PM curfew already had expired some 15 minutes earlier.
