Mike Groen started for DSS and retired the first nine batters he faced.
Initially, Groen wasn't assigned to start in this series.
That changed on Saturday when Jorn van Ingen started instead of Timo van Lingen.
As DSS was leading on Saturday, it used today's scheduled starter Tim Halderman in relief to secure the win.
And so, Groen was named starting pitcher for today.
In the third inning, Groen was supported by three great defensive plays by first baseman Tino van Erk.
He began with making a nice catch on a pop-fly by Kevin Weijgertse.
Moments later, Van Erk made a great stop on a grounder by Taylor Clemensia and got the ball in time to Groen, who took over first base.
Next, Max Draijer grounded to short stop Tommy van de Sanden, who made a high throw, but Van Erk caught the ball and tagged the runner in time on his chest to make the third out of the inning.
Pioniers opened the score in the fourth inning.
Daniel Fernandes led off with a double, then Dirk van 't Klooster followed with a bad-hop single to short.
That moved Fernandes, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Quintin De Cuba.
Fernandes and De Cuba also accounted for the other two Pioniers-runs later in the game.
In the second inning, DSS had come close to a run.
Tino van Erk led off with a walk and Seb Visser singled.
The first was then forced out on third base on a bunt by Tommy van de Sanden.
When Sven Jongejans flied out, Visser advanced to third base, but he was caught stealing moments later trying to score.
In the third and fourth inning, DSS stranded a runner on third base.
After giving up the run in the fourth inning, Mike Groen retired eight batters in a row and ten of the eleven batters he faced.
In the fifth and sixth inning, DSS left two runners in both at bats.
In the fifth, Mark Smit reached on an error with two outs, then Lex Leijenaar walked, but then Mitchell Koot lined out to pitcher Elton Koeiman.
Earlier in the inning, Pioniers-short stop Max Draijer had made a nice play on a grounder by Joffrey Heus.
In the sixth, Draijer made another fine defensive play on a grounder by lead-off hitter Ryan Miner.
Hereafter, Tino van Erk and Seb Visser singled, but then two flyouts followed.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, DSS got on base again.
With one out, Mark Smit and Lex Leijenaar singled to put runners on first and third base.
Moments later, the two runners were awarded the following base when a balk was called, meaning Smit scored the tying run.
It resulted in a heated argument by Pioniers' 3B Coach Theo Geerman against 1B Umpire Roy van de Wateringen.
With the score now tied at 1-1, DSS left a runner on second base when the next two batters were eliminated.
In the top of the eighth inning, Mark van Deursen took over the pitching for DSS.
He saw Pioniers re-take the lead when Daniel Fernandes homered down the leftfield-line with two outs.
Trailing 2-1, DSS left two more runners in the bottom of the eighth.
Tino van Erk led off with a single and Tommy van de Sanden walked with one out.
Hereafter, closer Bayron Cornelisse took over the pitching for Pioniers.
He struckout the first batter he faced and the inning ended when second baseman Daniel Fernandes made a nice catch on a line drive by Joffrey Heus.
In the ninth inning, Pioniers added an insurance run off of new pitcher Max Ploegstra when Quintin De Cuba led off with a homerun to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Cornelisse retired the side to earn his league-leading eighth save.
