Neptunus wins protested game, but Amsterdam stays ahead
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won 5-1 vs. league-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates on Tuesday-evening (July 28), when the remainder of an earlier game was replayed under some windy conditions. With the loss, Amsterdam ended a 9-game winning streak.

With the win by Neptunus, the season's series between the two teams is now 3-3, but despite the win, Neptunus will end up in second place in case of a tie with Amsterdam. After tonight's game, the run-average in the games played between the two teams remains in favor of Amsterdam. The run-average for Amsterdam is 114,29, while that of Neptunus is 87,50.

Coming weekend, Amsterdam will close its regular season with a 3-game series vs. DSS, while Neptunus meets UVV. Those series will determine the final ranking. The team that finishes in first place in the Overall Standings, qualifies for participation in one of the European Champions Cup Qualifying Tournaments of next year.

Today's game was initially played on Tuesday, June 30 as the second of three games between the two teams that were moved ahead. The games were scheduled for early August, but Neptunus then participates in the best-of-three final for of the European Champions Cup.

On June 30, Amsterdam Pirates won the game 4-1, but Neptunus filed a protest during the at bat of Nick Urbanus in the top of the fifth inning. with an 1-2 count, Neptunus stated that Urbanus was hitting with an illegal bat. The 3-man umpiring crew inspected the bat, but allowed it to remain in the game. Urbanus completed his at bat and flied out. When a bat is illegal and confirmed by the umpires, the batter has to be called out and ejected from the game. By allowing the bat to remain in the game, the umpires more or less stated that the bat was not illegal.

Neptunus played the remainder of the game under protest. On July 7, the Protest Committee awarded the protest to Neptunus, meaning all actions from the bottom of the fifth inning on were declared invalid. And so, the game resumed tonight with an 1-1 score from the beginning of the bottom of the fifth inning.

(July 28)

In the original game a month ago, Amsterdam stranded three runners in the first three innings off of starter Kenny Van Den Branden. Neptunus left two runners in its first two at bats off of Rob Cordemans, but opened the score in the third inning.

Both starters didn't return tonight. Van Den Branden had a sore shoulder, while Cordemans was the starting picher last Sunday for the Netherlands National Team in the final of the World Port Tournament against Cuba.

In the third inning, Shaldimar Daantji reached on an error, when the ball was partially lost in the outfield due to the sun. He then advanced on a passed ball and a single by Dwayne Kemp. A sacrifice fly by Benjamin Dille then led to the first run.

Amsterdam came alongside in the fourth inning. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a double, advanced on a grounder by Remco Draijer and scored the tying run on a grounder by Bas Nooij.

In the top of the fifth inning, Amsterdam got two more runners. With two outs, Roelie Henrique singled and Michael Duursma was hit by a pitch. Next batter Nick Urbanus then flied out to end the inning. Neptunus then stated that Urbanus had batted with an illegal bat and played the remainder of the game under protest. The umpires looked at the bat, but it was allowed to remain in the game, which can also be explained that the bat was not illegal.

When the game resumed tonight, Urbanus was officially ejected for using an illegal bat and the score was tied at 1-1.

Dennis Burgersdijk became the new pitcher for Amsterdam Pirates, while Jesse Aussems took over for Urbanus at second base. Neptunus also had to make some changes, as short stop Stijn van der Meer ended the World Port Tournament with a cold and was not available tonight. Raily Legito replaced Van der Meer and took over at third base, while Dwayne Kemp moved from third base to short. In the original game, Legito had entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning, but as that part of the game had become invalid, he now was available to be inserted earlier. Leftfielder Gyenuar Lopez was on a brief holiday and was replaced by Urving Kemp. On the mound, Kevin Kelly took over for Van Den Branden.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Neptunus scored two runs off of Burgersdijk. Shaldimar Daantji led off with a double, then scored on a pinch-hit double by Raily Legito. A sac-bunt by Dwayne Kemp moved Legito to third base and the veteran then scored on a 2-out single by Gianison Boekhoudt.

In the top of the sixth, Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a double for Amsterdam, but stranded on third base.

Neptunus added another run in the sixth inning. Christian Diaz led off with a triple and scored on a following single by Urving Kemp. When next batter Adrian Anthony also singled, Robin Schel took over for Burgersdijk and was supported with an inning-ending double play.

In the top of the seventh, Linoy Croes walked with one out, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique. Croes then moved to third base on an infield-hit by Michael Duursma, but slipped and was tagged out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dwayne Kemp singled and Gianison Boekhoudt walked with one out, which led to another pitching change. Tom de Blok took over for Schel and completed the inning in which Neptunus stranded two runners.

In the eighth, Amsterdam had another pitching change. Urving Kemp led off with a bunt-single. The ball slowly rolled besides the third-base line and ended up in fair territory, stopping just before the base. De Blok then struckout Adrian Anthony and Shaldimar Daantji. When Daantji struckout, Kemp stole second base. On the throw to second base, pitcher Tom de Blok was hit on his head by the ball. The game was interrupted, while De Blok sat down dizzy on the ground for a few minutes. With a headache, De Blok left the game and was replaced by Daan Hendrix. He walked Raily Legito, then gave up an RBI-single to Dwayne Kemp that lifted the lead to 5-1.

In the ninth, which was played in a drizzling rain, Bas Nooij led off with a walk for Amsterdam, but then a pop-fly and double play followed to end the game.

Without appearing in tonight's remainder, Neptunus-starter Kenny Van Den Branden became the winning pitcher, after having been the loser in the original game.
