Cordemans goes distance in Amsterdam-win vs. Neptunus

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Veteran pitcher Rob Cordemans went the distance on Tuesday-evening (June 30) for L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Curaçao Neptunus. The righthander used 114 pitches, struckout five batters and gave up only six hits in a 4-1 victory for Amsterdam.

With the win, Amsterdam moved into a tie for first place again with Neptunus. However, Amsterdam is listed ahead of Neptunus in both the second half standings, as well as the overall standings. In the second half, the head-to-head results between the two teams is 1-1, but the run-average in these games is in favor of Amsterdam. In the overall standings, Amsterdam is listed first as it is 3-2 in head-to-head results against Neptunus.

UVV and Mampaey The Hawks resumed their game tonight in the top of the fourth inning after UVV had won a protest which it had filed in the original game on May 28. Back then, UVV stated that a batter had reached first base after hitting with an illegal bat.

In tonight's game in Rotterdam, it was Neptunus that filed a protest in the top of the fifth inning also stating that a batter had used an illegal bat.

In the first three innings, Amsterdam stranded three runners off of starter Kenny Van Den Branden. Neptunus left two runners in its first two at bats off of Rob Cordemans, but opened the score in the third inning.

In the third, Shaldimar Daantji reached on an error, when the ball was partially lost in the outfield due to the sun. He then advanced on a passed ball and a single by Dwayne Kemp. A sacrifice fly by Benjamin Dille then led to the first run, which was to be the lone one scored tonight by the home team.

Amsterdam came alongside in the fourth inning. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a double, advanced on a grounder by Remco Draijer and scored the tying run on a grounder by Bas Nooij.

In the top of the fifth inning, Amsterdam got two more runners. With two outs, Roelie Henrique singled and Michael Duursma was hit by a pitch. Next batter Nick Urbanus then flied out to end the inning. Neptunus then stated that Urbanus had batted with an illegal bat and played the remainder of the game under protest. The umpires looked at the bat, but it was allowed to remain in the game.

In the top of the seventh inning, Amsterdam took a 2-1 lead. Patrick Bok led off with a double into rightfield. While chasing the ball, rightfielder Christian Diaz got a cramp in his hamstring and had to leave the game. Moments later, Bok moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Rashid Gerard, which led to a pitching change. Kevin Kelly took over, but was greeted with a runscoring single by Linoy Croes. After a strikeout, Kelly walked Michael Duursma and Nick Urbanus, but Amsterdam left the bases loaded when a flyout ended the at bat.

In the eighth inning, Amsterdam scored another run off of new pitcher Berry van Driel. Remco Draijer reached on an error and stole second base with one out. He then scored on a 2-out single by Rashid Gerard.

Amsterdam scored another insurance run in the top of the ninth inning off of Loek van Mil. Michael Duursma led off with a walk and advanced on a single by Nick Urbanus. Hereafter, Kenny Berkenbosch grounded into a double play that moved Duursma to third base. He then scored when Remco Draijer reached on an error.

After giving up the run in the third inning, Rob Cordemans allowed only two runners to get into scoring position in the remainder of the game. The righthander retired the side in the fourth inning, then gave up a 2-out single to Dwayne Kemp in the fifth. Kemp stole second base, but was left behind. After retiring the side again in the sixth inning, Cordemans gave up a lead-off single to Gyenuar Lopez in the seventh. He moved on a sacrifice bunt by Adrian Anthony, but also was left behind. Cordemans got three outs again in the eighth.

Trailing 4-1, Rien Vernooij led off the ninth ining for Neptunus with a single. Raily Legito then entered the game as pinch-hitter. The veteran third baseman spend the last ten days on Curaçao for a project, but tonight, he was back in uniform. Vernooij was forced out when Legito grounded to third base, then a strikeout and flyout ended the game.
