The Hawks wins protested game by UVV
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - On Tuesday-evening (June 30), UVV and Mampaey The Hawks completed their game that originally began on Thursday-evening, May 28. That game ended in a 9-9 tie and was halted after eight complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

In the top of the fourth inning, with The Hawks leading 3-0, UVV filed a protest stating that The Hawks-batter Kilian Jansen batted with an illegal bat when he delivered a single. It was reported that the umpiring crew confirmed that the bat was illegal, but nevertheless, Jansen remained in the game.

On June 18, it was announced that the Protest Committee had awarded the protest to UVV, as Jansen should have been declared out and ejected from the game. With that, all actions from the top of the fourth inning with two outs were declared invalid and the remainder of the game had to be replayed.

Tonight, the teams were back on the field in Vleuten to play this remainder. Did UVV earn one point for the tie on May 28, tonight, the team was left empty-handed, as it lost 4-3 to The Hawks, that now earned two points instead of one point.

With this game, the first half of the season officially was completed.

(June 30)

When the game resumed tonight, The Hawks led 3-0. In the top of the fourth inning, Kilian Jansen was officially declared out (becoming the second out) and was ejected for using an illegal bat. There also were four changes in the UVV-defense, including Timo van Ancum becoming the new pitcher. He relieved Ian Delemarre, who had started the original game. Delemarre was unable to return to the mound tonight, as he had thrown seven innings in last Sunday's game. The inning ended when Wijnand Ruben grounded out.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, The Hawks also made five changes, but that didn't include a pitching change. Quinn Tramm was the original pitcher on May 28. He had pitched the first 3 1/3 inning of last Thursday's game and so, he returned to the mound tonight, almost 33 days or almost 765 hours after the original game ended. Tramm retired the side and so, the fourth inning was finally in the books.

Let's first go back to the first three innings. The Hawks scored its first two runs in the first inning. The first run was scored on a fielder's choice-grounder by Gregory Trinidad, then the second was added on a sacrifice fly by Amir Daou.

The third run was added in the top of the third inning on a single by Berend Ruben.

The Hawks added a fourth run tonight in the sixth inning off of Van Ancum. Julian Goins led off with a walk, moved on a grounder by Jules Peters (who returned to the line-up) and a sacrifice bunt by Amir Daou, then scored on a single by Chris Williams.

In the bottom of the sixth, UVV left two runners behind, but then scored twice in the seventh. Jamie Verheyleweghen and Dennis Ribbens led off with singles, but the latter then was forced out on a grounder by Joris van Ballegooy. A single by Gilmer Lampe and a wild pitch narrowed the deficit to 4-2. After next batter Dennis De Quint walked, José Moreno took over the pitching and ended the at bat.

UVV added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brennan Nijhof led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Jordan Illis, then scored on a double by Jamie Verheyleweghen. The latter was forced out on a grounder, then the inning ended when Ribbens tried to move from first to third base on a single by Joris van Ballegooy, but was eliminated at third base after a throw from centerfield.

In the top of the ninth, The Hawks got the bases loaded with one out, but then Berend Ruben grounded into a double play.

In the bottom of the ninth, Michel Offerman took over the pitching for The Hawks. With two outs, he walked a batter, but a force out ended the game.
