HCAW stunts with win vs. Pioniers
Nederlands
BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW outhit Vaessen Pioniers 10-5 on Thursday-evening (July 30) and stunt with an 8-2 win in a game that was suspended for almost 40 minutes due to the bright sunset. Due to the sun-delay, the game lasted only seven innings and was then halted because of the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

When Pioniers had won tonight, it had officially qualified for the Play-Offs. Theoretically, HCAW and UVV can still pass Pioniers into fourth place. Pioniers needs one win to secure its spot in the postseason.

(July 30)

HCAW was productive from the beginning. Starting pitcher Maickel Rietel retired the side in the top of the first inning, then was supported with a run in the home half. Raoell Kortstam led off with an infield-hit, then advanced on a passed ball and a single by Roy Seltenrijch. With one out, Seltenrijch stole second base, then Kortstam stole home on the throw to second, which ended in a throwing error. That enabled Seltenrijch to move to third base, but he was left there.

In the second inning, Pioniers came alongside. Vince Rooi reached on an error, moved to second base on an one-out single by Quintin De Cuba, then scored on a single by Kevin Dirksen. While Rooi scored, De Cuba got hung up in a rundown between second and third base to become the second out.

In the bottom of the second inning, HCAW left two runners off of Elton Koeiman, but then rallied for four runs in the next at bat. With this, it definitively turned the game its way, as HCAW's pitching gave up only one more run in the remainder of the game.

In the top of the third, Rietel walked two batters, but closed the inning with a strikeout. His teammates then rallied for four (unearned) runs moments later on only two hits. Roy Seltenrijch led off with a single and Kevin Nieveld was hit by a pitch. The first was then forced out at third base on a grounder by Rossini Frolijk. After the two runners had advanced on a wild pitch, Pioniers-starter Elton Koeiman walked Emersson Paula to load the bases. Jarreau Martina followed with another force play-grounder, but that ended in a throwing error at the plate, resulting in two runs. A grounder by Brian Biezen and single by Rikkert Kempen then lifted the lead to 5-1.

After three complete innings, the game was interrupted due to the bright sunset, resulting in the almost 'traditional' sun-delay in Bussum on sunny days. Tonight's delay lasted 37 minutes.

When the game resumed, Pioniers was retired in order in the fourth, then HCAW stranded a runner in its fourth. Kortstam led off with a double, tried to stretch it into a triple, but was thrown out at third base. Nieveld singled with two outs, but was left behind.

In the top of the fifth inning, after Kevin Weijgertse led off with a single, Steven van Groningen replaced Maickel Rietel, who therefore missed being credited with the win, as starting pitchers need five. Weijgertse was forced out and Pioniers left another runner.

Pioniers got another scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth inning, but scored only once. Danny Rombley led off with a single, then advanced on a wild pitch and a single by Vince Rooi. With runners on first and third base and no outs, a strikeout followed, then Quintin De Cuba grounded out, enabling Rombley to score. Kevin Dirksen then was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch put runners on second and third base. The inning ended with a flyout, stranding two more runners.

With the 10:30 PM curfew-time approaching, HCAW started batting in the bottom of the seventh inning, knowing it already had won the game. In the at bat, the home team added three more runs to lift the lead to 8-2. Sedley Karel had come on in the previous inning and then retired the side. But in the seventh, Karel saw six batters reach base safely. Roy Seltenrijch (who was 3-for-4) and Kevin Nieveld began with singles. After a wild moved the runners, the bases got loaded when Rossini Frolijk walked. Another wild pitch followed, resulting in a run. Emersson Paula then also walked to load the bases again. Hereafter, Karel uncorked a third wild pitch, which gave HCAW another run. An infield-hit by Jarreau Martina re-loaded the bases for the third time and HCAW scored its third run in the at bat when Brian Biezen walked. That marked the end for Karel, who was relieved by Reggie Bomberg. A double play and strikeout followed to end the game due to the curfew-rule.
